Is it acceptable to sing along at the theatre?

Quick poll: as the title says.

Yes, no or it depends on the show.

I'm watching the Jersey Boys and the woman next to me is singing rather enthusiastically with every song.

I want her to shut up.

Back later. Second half starting Grin

Oh god no. Why would people pay to listen to crazy wannabes croon over the professionals?

Mysterian · 12/02/2019 21:28

No. Really annoying.

Although I'm seeing Rocky Horror in a few weeks. Compulsory for that show!

BrusselPout · 12/02/2019 21:30

I can't hold a note, but it didn't stop me warbling along to Bella figlia dell'amore from the front row of Rigoletto the other night. I just ignore the tuts and shushes from the snobs (and the theatre staff) and enjoy myself.

Well at least you enjoyed yourself, never mind being an inconsiderate arsehole to everyone around you 😡

Raspberry88 · 12/02/2019 21:32

donquixotedelamancha

Gosh, I bet that's quite something...do you do all the voices?

LBOCS2 · 12/02/2019 21:36

No. Not acceptable - I didn't pay for a ticket to hear the audience sing, thanks.

I was at Mamma Mia a few weeks ago and there was a fairly drunk woman behind us who was absolutely outraged to be told by the staff that no one wanted to hear her singing and she should STFU. She was asked to leave the theatre ten minutes into the second act.

Sirzy · 12/02/2019 21:38

Unless it’s something like rocky horror then no way!

A bit of under breath singing is one thing but not enough to stop others enjoying it. I struggled at wicked but managed to control my urge as nobody would pay to see me singing defying gravity!

Fredathetortoise · 12/02/2019 21:39

If you were posting during act 2 about getting moved to the Circle, YABU

donquixotedelamancha · 12/02/2019 21:39

do you do all the voices?

No. I'm incredibly monotone. I do however shout out 'oh no she isn't' when (for example) the blokes are abducting his daughter but claiming it's the countess.

Well at least you enjoyed yourself, never mind being an inconsiderate arsehole to everyone around you 😡

Why do people go to the Opera if not for a good sing-a-long?

TortoiseLettuce · 12/02/2019 21:40

Unless the show is a singalong then no, you shouldn’t sing. Theatre tickets are really expensive and I’ve paid to hear the professionals sing, not the audience.

LightDrizzle · 12/02/2019 21:46

I think DonQuixotedelaMancha might have been posting in jest and now enjoying the people now tilting at windmills!

Gottalovesummer · 12/02/2019 21:46

Huh? Don't get this. Can't we sing along?

So we just sit in our (expensive)seats all mute and stiff as boards? ?

How weird.

PickleSarnie · 12/02/2019 21:51

You're on your phone though. Also incredibly annoying

huntinghighandlow · 12/02/2019 21:53

I took my mum to see Pam Ayres, and the woman next to me said the last line of every verse before Pam did. I wanted to punch her!

BackforGood · 12/02/2019 21:54

Generally no, although I have been to shows where the cast encourage you to - then it is acceptable, obviously.

Am not sure how you are on your phone though ??

Raspberry88 · 12/02/2019 21:55

Why do people go to the Opera if not for a good sing-a-long?

Ha! To show how clever they are? I love opera but even I think it can be improved with a little audience participation...it's different to a musical, it's supposed to be a social occasion, otherwise why would they be so bloody long!

EggysMom · 12/02/2019 21:56

Evening performance, full-ish auditorium, high-ticket show, I wouldn't sing.

Matinee performance, virtually empty balcony, bargain price, I'm belting my heart out to Joseph Grin

AppleKatie · 12/02/2019 22:00

🤣 at the idea that anyone with a Don Quixote NN really sings along off key at the theatre.

AdoreTheBeach · 12/02/2019 22:01

I saw jersey boys a few years ago, everyone was singing. Thought it really added to the atmosphere and I see nothing wrong with it.

LeadMeToTheChocolate · 12/02/2019 22:05

No to theatre but maybe you should recommend she sees the film at an outdoor cinema- we saw grease- EVERYONE sang along even though it wasn’t a sing-a-long and danced and it was all fabulous and merry. Bring on summer again!

DramaAlpaca · 12/02/2019 22:06

When I saw Mamma Mia in the West End everyone was singing along, including me Blush Grin

RegIsDead · 12/02/2019 22:07

I was on my phone in the interval. The performance wasn't on when I posted.

Thanks for (mostly) the support. The view from the circle was ace and I loved the second half.

I don't understand how you sussed me out, I was so subtle. I do enjoy a good DonQuixotedelaMancha (the book) reference too.

I love opera but even I think it can be improved with a little audience participation

You can't call yourself an opera buff unless you boo loudly and shout 'he's behind you' when Scarpia turns up in Tosca.

bluebell2017 · 12/02/2019 22:11

No one was singing along when I saw Mamma Mia. Thank goodness!

My brother got kicked out of a theatre once for singing along. Thankfully, I wasn't with him at the time. But he was most indignant when he told me about it.

donquixotedelamancha · 12/02/2019 22:14

I encourage you all to practice for next time you got to see Carmina Burana:

WellGoshDarnIt · 12/02/2019 22:14

People did this at Bat Out of Hell, (normal performance, not a sing a long). They were all shite and I would happily have murdered them all. My friend saw Motown the musical recently and they had signs up everywhere, (including the loos), reminding the audience that there was to be absolutely NO singing along whatsoever.
