What do you actually eat? Just curious

Are you looking for recipes/meal ideas or do you just not get the concept of not eating meat?

Nemesia · 11/02/2019 12:29

Vegan, I have alpro unsweetened yoghurt with blueberries and raspberries topped with hazelnuts and oat cheerios for breakfast. Lunch is usually soup and oatcakes with an apple. Dinner something like pasta and sauce or rice with stir fry and tofu.
What do you usually eat?

Sonicknuckles · 11/02/2019 12:45

I'm not vegetarian or vegan myself but have started to try and eat a bit healthier and most meals I will have meat or fish so I am genuinely interested in what alternatives there are

ScrumpyCrack · 11/02/2019 12:48

Lots. You can have the exact same meals and replace the fish/meat with very convincing veggie/vegan versions. Just have browse next time you’re shopping.

Horses4 · 11/02/2019 12:51

Curries, bolognese, chili, pasta.... same as meat eaters but either with veggies or meat subsitute. The Waitrose vegan mince is great and the Linda McCartney ‘duck’ is good in stir fries.

BoglingToAswad · 11/02/2019 12:53

I'm not veggie either but I'm trying to do the same as you, and only have meat once or twice a week.

I made a lovely Quorn and veggie lasange yesterday, and some other favourites are vegetable fried rice, butternut squash risotto, pasta with blended tomato and aubergine sauce, veggie curry.

I think I'll probably give up meat altogether soon, but I'm not so sure I can say the same about cheese Sad.

Averysmallcasserole · 11/02/2019 12:54

Have s look at a Slimming World or weughtwatchers 7 day meal planner to give you an idea of meals. You can always add cheese if you aren’t dieting per se !

YourEggnogIsBetterThanMine · 11/02/2019 12:54

I'm vegetarian (25+ years) but trying to reduce dairy use now too.

Cereal and almond milk
Toast with banana and honey or peanut butter
Porridge with maple syrup and nuts

Salads, pasta, stir fry, bean burgers, lentil curry, jacket potato, veggie sausage and 2 veg. I like quorn, Linda McCartney etc products so spag bol, chilli, toad in the hole, fajitas etc.

DH eats meat and there are very few meals that I can't adapt to vegetarian. Vegan has been tougher so I aim for a vegan breakfast and a few lunches and dinners through the week.

CalmDownPacino · 11/02/2019 12:54

I'm vegan. I have had coffee and fruit for breakfast. For lunch I have got lentil and veg soup and for tea tonight I am having 'pulled pork' fajitas and potato wedges (the pulled pork is something called Oumph which is made from soya).

Dimsumlosesum · 11/02/2019 13:04

I'd love to go vegetarian, if only the substitute options actually tasted nice.

Dimsumlosesum · 11/02/2019 13:05

@CalmDown, how does the Oumph taste?

RaininSummer · 11/02/2019 13:05

So far today I have had greek yogurt with chia seeds, cinnamon and blueberries, soup (cauliflower and spinach dahl soup) with some cheese and will probably have black bean and quinoa chilli with avocado for dinner.

Yesterday I had coconut flour pancakes with blueberries, cheese salad and jackfruit and mushroom caribbean curry with millet.

CalmDownPacino · 11/02/2019 13:05

They taste lovely. I have to hide the Oumph because the meat eaters in my house steal it.

CalmDownPacino · 11/02/2019 13:08

Mr Pacino and stepson say it tastes exactly the same as pulled pork. They do a smokey flavour, a salt and spicy flavour and a plain one. They are genuinely delicious.

Hedgehogblues · 11/02/2019 13:09

I don't understand why people can't work this out for themselves. There are more plant based foods in the world than there are animal based

mydogisthebest · 11/02/2019 13:13

Me and DH have been vegetarian for over 30 years. We don't eat much in the way of meat substitutes but do eat lots of lentils, beans, chickpeas, nuts and vegetables.

Some of the meals we make are:

Egg and lentil curry
Black bean burgers
Black bean chilli
Lentil bolognaise
Lentil lasagne
Roasted veg lasagne
Lentil and veg shepherds pie with sweet potato topping
Butternut squash and chickpea curry
Kale and ricotta pasta bake
Spicy chickpea pasties
Mushroom stroganoff
Vegetable tagine
Ratatouille
Shakshuka
Mushroom en croute
Chickpea and spinach curry
Paneer and spinach curry
Aubergine curry
Cauliflower and potato curry

We eat lots of curries as we both love them

mydogisthebest · 11/02/2019 13:15

Dimsum, plenty of meals you can make without using substitutes.

I stopped eating meat because I didn't like the taste of it so don't really want to eat veggie things that taste like meat. I tried the Linda McCartney steak pies and they tastes far too much like steak for me. I also think anything that tastes like pulled pork sounds revolting

witchy89 · 11/02/2019 13:17

You can make pretty much any dish vegan. Start with your favourite meals and see what you can substitute the meat for. You'd be surprised by how many meat replacements there are at your local supermarket. Have a look in the 'vegetarian' freezer section next time you're there. I love a Shepard's pie with veggie mince (or lentils), chickpea curry with cashews and coconut milk, stir fries with Linda McCartney shredded 'duck' or 'chicken', pizza (you can even get them straight from the freezer now ready made, goodfellas even do a vegan pizza!), pasta bakes. Sainsbury's and Tesco both have a good selection of ready meals too if you prefer quick convenient food. It's definitely a myth that all vegans eat salad and tofu 😂

TonTonMacoute · 11/02/2019 13:22

Not veggie but don't eat much meat during the week. I eat a lot of vegetable curries, eggs, cheese and pasta. Megatons of mushrooms, lots of lentils and other pulses, nuts.

I also really hate the pretend meats, I would rather have cauliflower, my current most favourite vegetable.

Dimsumlosesum · 11/02/2019 13:22

@mydog, i just like meat with a lot of the dishes I love. If they did good alternatives, I would swap in a heartbeat. I use Quorn for some things like sausages and nuggets already, but their mince or faux chicken doesn't taste nice. I've never heard of Oumph, so will definitely be giving that a try.

slappinthebass · 11/02/2019 13:22

I'm veggie, typical weeks meal:

Noodles with veg and crispy tofu
Fajitas made with quorn and peppers
Pasta bolognese or lasagne made with green lentils
Stuffed mushrooms with salad/rice
Veggie burgers with chips and salad
Chickpea/spinach/butternut squash curry
Quorn roast/nut roast with roast potatoes and veg

Dimsumlosesum · 11/02/2019 13:23

That lentil shepherds pie sounds nice, I'll add that to the list too :)

pelirocco123 · 11/02/2019 13:24

You can just substitute the meat , and it doesnt have to be with fake meat . Tofu , beans or just veg

Loyaultemelie · 11/02/2019 13:27

I'm vegetarian but can't have milk or cream
Toast (or bready thing of choice)with peanut butter and banana or porridge with oat milk

Lunch: soup and ryvita. (I usually batch cook either vegetable, kale which is like leek and potato with a handful of kale chucked in at the last and blitzed, or spicy parsnip) /Sandwich with tofurkey and apple with cheese./ Wrap with stirfried peas, mushrooms kale and nutritional yeast

Dinner: Lentil Lasagna/ hash brown casserole (veggie mince, onions, peas, carrots and usually kale or sweetcorn fired off add a roux with a stock pot, season and top with hash browns and grated cheese./ mixed veg stir fry with or without noodles/ mushroom stroganoff with rice or couscous/ halloumi, mushrooms and kale stir fried with nutritional yeast on top of 3 cheese bloomer (not the healthiest but gorgeous!)

Loyaultemelie · 11/02/2019 13:28

Oh and a cauliflower rice pizza base is really tasty, I discovered it low carbing but eat regularly and when romanesco is in season it makes an even tastier base
