Holy shitballs. Burnt my finger. Pain. Ouch.

I was cooking some pasta on the hob (electric) and wondered why the water wasn't boiling.
Being the fucking tired idiot I am I put my hand on the plates to find which one was hot, found it and then kept my fingers on the plate for a few seconds.

It's agony!! The burn immediately turned white so I put my fingers under cold running water for about 20 minutes.
Ever since I've been holding on to cold things (drinking glass, cans from the fridge..) but I can't take my hand off for more than 3 seconds without the awful, burning, stinging pain coming back.

Any tips on how to take the sting out of a burn? It's only small but lethal Sad

Ibuprofen will work wonders. If it blisters see your pharmacist tomorrow who may recommend the GP. Don't put any cream or oil of any kind on it. (Usually on these threads some smart arse will recommend lavender or coconut oil Hmm )

LikeACowsOpinion · 10/02/2019 23:26

I've just taken so ibuprofen and paracetamol, hoping for some relief soon.
I'm getting cramp from holding things Blush
Couldn't think of anything worse than putting oil on it - I'd go through the roof!

I could be wrong but I think the pain comes from oxygen hitting it. So covering it could actually help.

I was told by the nurse in hospital to put honey on dd's burnt hand but i believe this is no longer considered appropriate??

Any aloe vera gel, you kniw, just laying around?

I would keep holding cool (not ice cold) things. Maybe lightly cover the area with cling film to keep it clean.

And yes ibruprofen is your friend

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 10/02/2019 23:28

I burn myself quite often. I find dipping a clean face cloth or tea towel (get someone to iron it for you - not sure why but mum used to advise that) in freezing cold water and trapping it around my hand works well. Keep rewetting the cloth.

I keep burn gel at home - but wouldnt use anything else on it. Painkiller for the pain and see a pharmacist in the morning if it blisters.

Level11 · 10/02/2019 23:29

I've done this a couple of times and I've slept with my hand in a bowl of water at the side of the bed. It's always better in the morning but it's the only way I've been able to sleep.

Nubbled · 10/02/2019 23:34

Wrap your fingers in cling film, excluding the air will rid you of the pain.

LikeACowsOpinion · 10/02/2019 23:34

The face cloth in cold water is a very good idea!! Will do that now. Thank you!

I'm vary wary about putting anything on it apart from water. The sting is unbearable, I would cry if I made it worse.

I tried wrapping it after running under cold water. When my finger came back up to room temperature it felt like it was on fire. I'm scared of doing that again.

I promise I'm not a big wuss, it really hurts!

tillythedog · 10/02/2019 23:37

very odd, but put fairy liquid on it, rub in and leave! instantly takes away the sting, my mum has been doing this since we was young and it seriously works !!

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 10/02/2019 23:38

Last time I burned myself it was so painful I thought I was going to vomit. They are used to me burning myself here but I was too sore to swear and they got quite worried!

sazzle27 · 10/02/2019 23:41

If it is any consolation, the fact it hurts is a good sign.

Personally i would get a bowl of cold water and leave my finger in it. 20 minutes probably isn't enough to be honest, and id be expecting a big blister..

burntdinner · 10/02/2019 23:42

I did exactly the same thing 2 weeks ago
Absolute agony
Hold them under the cold tap for ages , I really mean ages I'm sure without this mine would have been worse
After 20 mins or so I could take them away and hold a chilled can but they hurt after 5 mins or so each time back to the cold tap and can back in the fridge to cool down
Eventually they stopped hurting and I had a surprisingly good nights sleep , next day they blistered at around lunch time ( 18 hours on from initial burn) I left them alone and one burst 4 days later - the others dried out and all pealed , no particular pain apart from edge of peeling where new skin was against old peeling skin
Cold water is your best friend right now

leccybill · 10/02/2019 23:42

Oh I did this last year, except it was all 10 fingers and thumbs can you believe Shock
Took a plate out of the oven with oven gloves on. Set it down, got cutlery out of the drawer then picked up red hot plate again without thinking.
Never, ever known pain like it. I cried a lot. Every finger blistered. I had to take a day off work, felt a right wally. God, the pain though, I'm wincing now remembering it.

Namenic · 10/02/2019 23:42

Keep under cold water for 20mins at least. Go to A&e - they should probably review it because it is on a critical part of the body and if it scars, it can have reduced mobility causing decreased function. My toddler burnt his hand and I went to a&e and they checked it and gave me a follow up appointment to make sure it was healing ok.

burntdinner · 10/02/2019 23:43

Seriously - keep it under cold running water

SingaSong12 · 10/02/2019 23:49

NHS advice which does suggest seeking help due to site of the burn-

www.nhs.uk/conditions/burns-and-scalds/

LikeACowsOpinion · 10/02/2019 23:50

Fingers are back in cold water now.
They have to be touching something cold at all times or else they feel as though they'll burst into flames.

Not to be grim, but I heard my skin sizzle on the plate of the hob. I think if my hand had been there for a second longer my skin would've stuck. So, so painful.

If it blisters it's going to be so tough not to pop them Blush

LikeACowsOpinion · 10/02/2019 23:52

I would feel really silly going to A&E or the GP with this. It's only my fingertips, seems so minor in the scheme of things.
I'll see a pharmacist tomorrow if it's still bad.

PurpleWithRed · 10/02/2019 23:58

Cool cool cool but not ice: water can be tepid it doesn’t have to be freezing, just as cool as you can handle for as long as you need it.

sazzle27 · 10/02/2019 23:59

Chances are if you saw a nurse (be it at gp or a&e), they would pop the blisters in order to clean and dress it..
I managed to burn the top of my hand back in October and it blistered over the course of the night.. and popped before the morning whilst I was asleep.
You will invariably catch it, it will hurt... try to pop to a pharmacist tomorrow and ask about burn creams/dressings they would recommend; they're super knowledgeable and would be able to also say if they couldnt help and recommend a gp etc 👍🏻

acatcalledjohn · 10/02/2019 23:59

Burns on the inside of your hands are considered severe and I would suggest you seek medical attention sooner rather than later.

You would not be silly going to A&E at all. You need the correct treatment for the burns given the location.

Do not apply Vaseline to the burns. 😱

SingaSong12 · 11/02/2019 00:06

Ring 111 and see what they suggest. Depending on your area could be a walk in centre.

BertrandRussell · 11/02/2019 00:06

Please ignore anything but the advice to keep the burn in cool water. Either under the tap or in a bowl of water with an ice cube in it to keep it cool. Replace the ice cube as it melts. People will suggest cling film, tooth paste, honey, lavender oil- all dangerous bollocks.
