Looking at holiday to Spain or Spanish islands, in the Easter holidays. But are we mad? Will be be able to go? Will leaving EU with no deal mean we can't go?

I've signed up to the gov.uk travel advice for Spain, but due to our crappy politicians it looks like we won't really know what's happening til end end of march.

Or sit tight and book really last minute?

I need some sun!

I think the current advice is to book a package holiday from places like Thompson's as it's protected

elQuintoConyo · 08/02/2019 09:37

I'm looking to fly the opposite direction (perhaps we could house-swap WinkGrin) but am holding off on booking anything.

I might just wait and book for late August. It's a pain in the arse!

Hiphopopotamous · 08/02/2019 09:38

We are flying on 31/3 - it was very cheap unsurprisingly!
Got an ATOL protected deal, if we can't go we will get a full refund.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 08/02/2019 09:38

I’m thinking of traveling over Easter, but am worried about being stuck at the fucking airport for ever.

isseywithcats · 08/02/2019 10:25

weve booked for Spain in August i think it will just be like when we go to a non Eu country like say Tunisia fill in a visa form on the plane, as somewhere like Spain isnt going to want to lose the tourist money from UK i cant see them putting massive obstacles in the way

Everythingmagnolia · 08/02/2019 10:27

I have booked Spain at Easter and I am not worried. It is a package deal so ATOL protected and the agent said if we have to cancel our holiday due to Brexit then we get all our money back.

GiantKitten · 08/02/2019 10:32

I’ve deliberately avoided booking anything abroad this year - I want to know that I will be able to have the holiday I want at the time I want it with the only worries being traffic & UK weather... Confused

diymania · 08/02/2019 10:36

We’re flying to Paris in Easter so I hope it’s all sorted by then! One additional thing to note is that the advice is that you should have at least 6 months left on your passport before travelling - so best check that too if you decide to book!

GiantKitten · 08/02/2019 11:00

Oh yes, the 6-month thing will be a MUST for EU destinations, not a should, if there is no deal. Passport Office is warning of delays if that happens, & of course renewing within 9 months & getting the balance added on to new one doesn’t happen any more.

There will be an ESTA-type visa requirement too, if no deal. And EHIC & free mobile roaming will end.

It won’t be up to Spain - EU requirement will be a 3-year visa for all EU countries, applied for in advance, like the 2-year ESTA for USA. It’ll cost €7

RTBAdmin · 08/02/2019 13:02

Please know that if your passport is made up of leftover months from your previous passport, depending on when it is due for renewal, it may not have the 6 months you need on it.

BitchQueen90 · 08/02/2019 13:37

I'm going away in April and I'm not concerned.

Sun isn't a guarantee for Spain in April though, the weather can be iffy!

DipIt · 08/02/2019 13:42

We live in Spain. BitchQueen90 is right. Sun and warmth are definitely not guaranteed. This winter has been very cold and rainy. May/June would be better.

southnownorth · 08/02/2019 13:43

I think it will be ok, we have booked for the end of May.

I would be more concerned about the weather in April.

sansou · 08/02/2019 13:53

I booked flights to Malaga when they were released last autumn, totally forgetting about Brexit. I've decided to go ahead and book accommodation this week, tickets for attractions, etc. I'm well aware that it's a bit of a gamble though especially when we're due to fly out early April. At least, the airport is less than an hour away from home if it all goes to pot - we'll just give up and drive home.

Dowser · 08/02/2019 13:57

I thought you meant weather wise
Canaries better for weather at Easter

Howzaboutye · 08/02/2019 14:17

Hi thanks all.
Yes I'm trying to go as far south as possible, gran canaria, Tenerife etc then the weather might be around 20 degrees. I'm not good over about 25 degrees, so we can't go anywhere hot in the summer holidays.

We are restricted to school holidays, so may isn't really an option. Other than the may half term I suppose.

Thanks for the atol info, I'll make sure whatever we book it's covered by that.

elQuinto are you in madiera? I love madiera, would be up for a house swap if you want a week in London! Pm me if you are interested!

CottonSock · 08/02/2019 14:18

I have! Might get a driving permit but not concerned

GiantKitten · 08/02/2019 15:03

Howzaboutye

I was in Madeira last week. High was between 19-21 most days & it was sometimes too hot for me in the sun Shock

Wonderful place!

Howzaboutye · 08/02/2019 15:35

Ooh lovely Giant

OP posts:
Blankiefan · 08/02/2019 15:40

If there's no deal, the biggest issue is likely to be LONG queues into Spain and back into the UK. The infrastructure just isn't in place to support the shift from free movement. It'll take time to sort it.

Blankiefan · 08/02/2019 15:40

And obviously your EHIC would be unlikely to work so definitely sort travel insurance.

isseywithcats · 08/02/2019 15:55

ok just googled it and it looks fairly straight forward apply for an etias visa when they announce it luckily i have plenty of time to do this post march

Pez82 · 08/02/2019 16:45

I'm flying to Madrid with my daughter on 28 March, supposedly returning on 1 April. I'm secretly hoping we get stuck there and that my travel insurance will pay for the extended holiday - wishful thinking I guess
