Emilo Sala... Nantes demand transfer fee. Bad taste?

cjt110 · 07/02/2019 06:30

Firstly... am not being goady and the DailyMail can fuck off.

I cant decide if this is in bad taste or not.

My initial reaction was one of shock and "they havent even found him yet for goodness sake"

But then after some thought, I also thought business is business. Cardiff bought Sala. Nantes are asking for payment.

So... is it in bad taste or is it fair and square...

I must admit when I first heard what had happened I wondered what would be the situation regarding the transfer fee.

CormoranStrike · 07/02/2019 06:33

Really depends what the contract says.

But probably fair

Andtheskyisgrey · 07/02/2019 06:45

They may have a legal right to it, but to be publicly discussing it, I find despicable, given that his (and the pilots) body has not yet been recovered. It could have been resolved in due course, behind closed doors. With discretion and consideration for the fact that behind the huge amount of money involved is a family who have lost their son.

Presumably Cardiff had or should have insured the player for the value of the transfer fee, whereas Nantes no longer insured as sold him. So yes I would think absolutely correct to require paying for an agreed contract...

HunterHearstHelmsley · 07/02/2019 06:46

Might have been 'nicer' to wait until after the funeral at least.

He would (should!) have been insured anyway.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 07/02/2019 06:48

Insurance won’t pay out until he’s found though presumably.

cjt110 · 07/02/2019 06:50

@Andtheskyisgrey Most succinctly put about "behind closed doors" I can only imagine the distress this will cause all involved or associated, including the pilot's family.

I have heard rumours that a body has been found in the wreckage. I am unsure if this is confirmed. Regardless, it is only some solace for one family involved.

Thank you for the interesting discussion all. And sensitive handling of the same.

May both occupants rest in peace.

Dh just mentioned this whilst getting ready for work. He things legally they can but morally its the wrong timing and looks very bad on them especially as the plane has just been found. Very insensitive timing. The poor families of the pilot and emilo. X

HunterHearstHelmsley · 07/02/2019 08:31

The thing is, 15 million in football terms is nothing. They could have waited.

(I'm fully aware that 15 million is a hell of a lot of money)

BarbaraofSevillle · 07/02/2019 08:34

This issue also occurred to me when the news broke that the plane was missing.

It's a difficult one and I expect that both clubs will be consulting with their lawyers and insurers to work out what is due legally. Morally it does seem too soon to bring the subject up, but they would have had to do it sooner or later as Nantes would have had plans for the transfer fee. Maybe they need to buy new players, pay their existing ones, or pay other bills.

Will probably be a bit of a kick up the arse for all football clubs and anywhere else where 'ownership' of something very valuable is transferred as to defining exactly when the contract is formed, when liability is transferred etc. Like when people buy and sell houses and you need to make sure it is insured from when contracts are exchanged in case it burns down.

Isadora2007 · 07/02/2019 08:35

It’s not in bad taste to request/demand the money- business is business. But it is bad taste to make it public knowledge. It’s not newsworthy information, there is no need for anyone to know about it. And it is in bad taste for the family and friends of that poor man.

Patroclus · 07/02/2019 09:14

He was found last night I believe. Nobody knows what it says in the contract, but it seems Nantes have the law on their side.

Thymeout · 07/02/2019 09:18

I doubt if either side would have wanted this to be splashed all over the press. It sounds as if it's been leaked, or a reporter found someone who knew and spoke out of turn.

But, given the circumstances, it's understandable that the lawyers and insurance companies would have set things in motion. Sala had only signed the contract the day before and Nantes' insurers would obviously need some clarification and redress over such a large amount of money. Sala may have had personal insurance, too, and there's the question of his will and the estate.

TheRollingCrone · 07/02/2019 09:22

I can't believe his family had to crowdfund to continue the search. The money in football - FIFA should have covered all/any expenses.

As for Nantes - of course they're legally entitled to the money - but fuck, could they not have waited?

WantRapunzelLocks · 07/02/2019 09:29

It's equally insulting that Cardiff are not paying up.

As sad as it is, it was a deal they signed. Cardiff should pay without fuss.

cjt110 · 07/02/2019 10:06

I agree the timing is really shitty.

NeonK · 07/02/2019 10:23

Patroclus - just to clarify 'He' wasn't found. A body was recovered. Could equally have been the pilot.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 08/02/2019 07:49

It’s been confirmed now that it is him. Poor lad. Those voicemail messages were haunting. RIP Emiliano. Flowers

Quartz2208 · 08/02/2019 07:55

Nantes I think have financial issues it’s why he was sold in the first place (tragically he never wanted to leave he was happy there)

Yes I can’t see ho Cardiff cam fight it they signed him

lastqueenofscotland · 08/02/2019 07:56

Nantes don’t have anything like the sort of money that an English Premiership team would have. If they don’t get the fee they have lost their best player and any means of replacing him.

Insurance in some way or another should cover it.

Bad taste yes but the Premiership is a weird behemoth is terms of funding and wealth due to sky sports deals and the attention bought to the whole league internationally from worldwide interest in a small number of the teams in it that doesn’t exist in other European top flight tournaments.

greendale17 · 08/02/2019 07:58

So yes I would think absolutely correct to require paying for an agreed contract...

^This. Cardiff should pay up. Bad timing though

Aprilshowersarecomingsoon · 08/02/2019 08:01

Rip Emiliano.
His poor family.

Jess74 · 08/02/2019 08:14

I imagine the timing is due to the possibility of money needing to be paid within a certain period of time after the contract was agreed.

Patroclus · 08/02/2019 08:44

He was Cardiff's record signing, so not quite 'nothing' in terms of money.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 08/02/2019 08:49

It’s all very soon. Reminds me of how the white star line immediately stopped paying all crew of the Titanic the minute it struck the iceberg. Sad
