Muckspreading noooo!

kalefire · 06/02/2019 15:11

Just want a whinge really.

Moved into a new house, opposite a huge field and the farmer has just spread muck on it.
My house STINKS even though all windows are closed... I had to quickly run out to the car and I ended up dry heaving all over the place 🤢🤢
Honestly I've never smelt anything SOOOO BAD. I swear this isn't normal manure wahhhhh!!!

I'm venting on here because I KNOW there's nothing I can do, it's necessary, etc. But OH WOE IS ME.

Anyone want a house swap?

The word you're looking for is slurry, not muck. I grew up in the countryside and never remember being able to smell it with windows closed. Sounds like you're exaggerating just a bit.

Chicken Poo based manure is the worse thing I have ever smelt in my life. We spread it on our garden one memorable summer and couldn't go out there for days.

kalefire · 06/02/2019 15:23

Ahhhh Cherry, I'd love to invite you round for a cuppa tea so you could sniff it. could you squeeze through the postbox though as I'm unwilling to open the door GrinGrin

I've figured out why I can smell it in the house - the little vents at the top of the velux window was open in the upstairs hallway 🤢

DH is sat outside on the phone, I think he must be hard of smell or I am indeed a little over sensitive

ever wondered where those vegetables you see in the supermarket come from? Hmm

kalefire · 06/02/2019 15:24

Doyouthink yes I remember when mum cleared out the chickens the neighbours at the end of the street would complain GrinEnvy

You are aware the OP is having a whinge on here...so she can vent and let it loose?

She’s not banging down the doors of the farmers house demanding they stop using it or starting a petition to stop it.

Why argue with her about? We all need to vent at times at things we can’t change even if it’s aomwthinf that is essential

TowerRingInferno · 06/02/2019 15:28

I wonder if you live near me?! This sounds just like my village at the moment. Yesterday the children walked home from school covering their noses, and I had to abort my normal dog walk this morning because the stench was so strong I couldn’t breathe and was gagging. I think the cold weather and lack of wind makes it seem worse than normal? From past experience this lasts for about 2/3 days a year.

kalefire · 06/02/2019 15:28

ever wondered where those vegetables you see in the supermarket come from?

Uhhhh, the vegetable stork?

I'll reiterate the fact that I know it's necessary and as such it would never cross my mind to moan to the farmer doing his job earning his livelihood providing us all with fabulous veg.

Just wanted to share my misery at having such a clearly over sensitive nose bleugh.

Country born and bred......chicken shit stinks.
We are near farmland and it is a bit grim for a few days.....will soon be gone though.

cakesandphotos · 06/02/2019 15:29

A farm round ours used to use human manure. You could smell it for miles. I think he only did it for a couple of years before he was asked to stop

kalefire · 06/02/2019 15:31

Thank you Soubriquet 😭😭

Tower maybe we are neighbours.
If I get a good price on bulk buy gas masks are you interested ?

Yuck!

Honeyroar · 06/02/2019 15:36

Don't worry. It won't smell for too long. You just need a bit of rain to wash it in. At least your washing wasn't out!

Human slurry is by far the worst thing I've smelled spread on land. I'm not sure they're even meant to spread it nowadays.

CatFaceCats · 06/02/2019 15:38

Spreading near us too - as soon as I open the front door or a window the smell seeps in!

cakesandphotos · 06/02/2019 15:39

This was years ago, probably at least 12 years so I expect things have changed but my word the stench! I would happily stick my nose in regular slurry than have that up my nostrils again Envy (not envy)

Honeyroar · 06/02/2019 15:42

It's a good sign, it means we're onto the back end of winter...

Blooger · 06/02/2019 15:44

The manure they used to spread when we were a kid (mostly cow and a little bit of pig, all outdoors-kept and not unpleasant-smelling) has little to do with what they spread now. Often it's waste from (human) sewage farms and/or slurry from intensive indoor livestock operations. The latter in particular smells absolutely foul and is not good for your health. As a country girl born and bred, I send you my deepest sympathies.

Disfordarkchocolate · 06/02/2019 15:48

Water companies treat and sell human waste. Not nice but a very practical option. The smell won't last for long though. At least you don't live near a chicken farm, worse smell ever!

kalefire · 06/02/2019 15:51

😭😭😭

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 06/02/2019 16:06

Treated Human Waste is known as Sludge and is perfectly legal and, if farms round here are anything to go by, its use is on the increase Shock. As pp said, manure doesn’t smell at all bad so if it’s making you heave, chances are it’s sludge. You have my sympathy, get wafts of it here, luckily it doesn’t last long.

DoneLikeAKipper · 06/02/2019 16:24

Some posters on here, honestly (this isn’t even AIBU so really no excuse).

Grew up around farmland and I bloody understand where you’re coming from. Getting the bus through the most rural routes after the ‘muck’ had been spread - cue a collective groan from all and a hurry to shut any open windows! Needs to be done, price to be paid for all the usual ‘fresh air’ you get Grin.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 06/02/2019 16:30

We have a huge manure pile at the top of our road, that smellls nice when it rains or is sunny.

I got home today and I immediately smelt a cabbage smell so I guess our fields have been fertilised as well today.
