The average item of clothing in a woman’s wardrobe is there for just 5 weeks.

Just heard on the today programme.

Really? I have a coat that is 30 years old and expect to get a few years wear out of most things. I don’t think I’ve ever thrown anything out after just 5 weeks, even the fashion mistakes of my youth.

Christ I wear my clothes until they don't fit or are ruined!

VenusClapTrap · 31/01/2019 07:32

Me neither. I don’t know anyone who treats clothes like that.

SwimmingJustKeepSwimming · 31/01/2019 07:33

I dont think that can be true.

Don't believe that..

happystory · 31/01/2019 07:34

I think they must be talking about a different generation to me. I've got stuff I've had for years. I do notice the 20 somethings where I work have new clothes a lot though, and hardly ever wear the same thing twice.

Noonemournsthewicked · 31/01/2019 07:34

Got clothes aged 5 years or so and I still class them as new or 'for best' and I'm only early 30s.
Think this study was done on a very specific type of woman.

dementedpixie · 31/01/2019 07:34

I've got clothes in my wardrobe older than my children!

Whothere · 31/01/2019 07:34

Rubbish.

Where does it go then?

Seline · 31/01/2019 07:35

I have clothes 8 years old

TheFifthKey · 31/01/2019 07:35

Wait, that makes no sense. For that to be the case, there’d have to be lots of lots of clothes that were there for about a day, to balance out all the coats and pairs of jeans and Christmas jumpers you have to years on end. Some fact checking needed here before we all clutch pearls about these non-existent frivolous women throwing things away.

(But I predict this thread will be about people who wear clothes for 20 years chastising pretend women who buy all new ever season (and don’t exist))

Helmetbymidnight · 31/01/2019 07:35

Quite a lot of mine is on ‘the chair’.

Whothere · 31/01/2019 07:35

I can understand if it’s not worn after 5 weeks maybe but not literally thrown out.

Luglio · 31/01/2019 07:35

Sounds like bullshit. Women, eh? Destroying the planet.

BroomstickOfLove · 31/01/2019 07:37

Maybe most garments go from ironing pile to bring worn without getting any wardrobe time.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 31/01/2019 07:37

I can’t see a link yet, I’ll see if it’s up later, if only to prove I didn’t dream it!

But I we all keep put clothes for longer and the average is 5 weeks, are there people there who really throw stuff after just one wear?

That's unbelievable - it certainly fits in with the idea of a 'throwaway economy' (doesn't make it right though!). I cannot ever imagine getting rid of clothes after only five weeks unless it I'd clearly made the wrong decision when buying it. And I'd take it to a charity shop not throw it away.

Helmetbymidnight mine too!

ScreamingValenta · 31/01/2019 07:38

I can only speak for myself, but I've got a cardigan I bought in 1992 that I still wear.

WhirlwindHugs · 31/01/2019 07:40

I really don't believe this is true.

Maybe someone has divided the amount of clothes produced (or brought? And not accounted for returns and resales?) by the number of women and not actually clocked the massive flaw in that...

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 31/01/2019 07:41

That could be it broomstick Grin

TinselTimes · 31/01/2019 07:42

Don’t think that’s true at all!

Whisky2014 · 31/01/2019 07:42

No way

GingerbreadBlob · 31/01/2019 07:43

Utter rubbish reporting.

Appeared to be more about dissuading companies from encouraging fast fashion, but pretty sure there was a loaded comment in there about happy boohoo customers. So yes, it’s the silly wimmin’s fault.

Ifangyow · 31/01/2019 07:47

Rubbish. Who are these 5 week people? Are they buying their clothes in pound shops or something?
They must be buying cheap nasty stuff if they're throwing it after 5 weeks.
I've got clothes older than my kids in my wardrobes that I still wear.

RedForShort · 31/01/2019 07:47

The average woman? What? Was their subject pool made up of 3-6 month old girls?
