What apps have changed your life?

frenchonion · 29/01/2019 16:27

I've finally replaced my ancient crappy phone that would cause apps to crash with a cheap but nice new android Smile

I'm currently rediscovering the world of apps but I'm overwhelmed by so much being available. What apps do you love or have changed your life?

Google Keep - for all my notes, photos, scribbles and lists
Trello - to organise all my notes in Google Keep
Nova Launcher - highly customisable for the look and layout of Android.
Pages Manager - I have several work pages on Facebook and I can use this to view and edit these without viewing the actual Facebook app.
Twilight - reduces screen brightness and blue contrast with the sunrise/sunset.

Neverunderfed · 29/01/2019 22:44

Keep: I have a label for each family member, one for home, food, holidays etc and use it like a bookmark really

Amazon

eBay

Banking

Pay by phone for parking

Echo for ordering medication/prescriptions

What’s app for keeping in touch with a close group of friends

ElspethFlashman · 29/01/2019 22:50

I have a music player called PI Music Player. I find it the best of a woeful bunch as it organises your music and has a shuffle function. It's easy, basically.

Oh and the Audible app. I have my phone connected to the car via Bluetooth and so my audio books play via the stereo. Fantastic for the commute.

I also have Keep. It's very simple, nothing to it really, but it's handy for jotting down things on the go when you don't have a pen.

ElspethFlashman · 29/01/2019 22:50

Oh yes, forgot about Headspace. That's a good one.

Yes to many of those mentioned.
I also love touchnote for sending postcards, so much easier than sodding about trying to figure out how to post a postcard.

frenchonion · 29/01/2019 23:20

Loads to consider! Thank you for the recommendations Smile

To follow on from earlier post.

Banking app - not used for a while as i had trouble remembering the passwords but think I've sussed it now so will try again.

Period tracker - no longer using BUT that's because I don't need to! It enabled me to prove to my cpn that premenstrually my anxiety was MUCH worse and that led to her supporting me to ask GP to be able to take pill back to back and not have the damn things! I'm 46 and have endo too and frankly they're more trouble than they're worth! BUT as I write this I'm thinking I might track dds (with her permission) as she's been having problems with regularity lately. Might be useful to see if she's really irregular or cycle length has changed.

Sainsburys - online shopping, generally easy to use.

Amazon - I'm housebound plus we're rural and our high street has been DECIMATED! So things I can't get from (or are stupidly expensive at) sainsburys I get from here.

Music - iplayer, absolute radio (absolute 80's for me), heart

When I'm not housebound

National rail enquiries (more reliable for engineering works & delays)
Train line
Local taxi app

"Evernote. I have notebooks set up with different themes -eg I have one for my kids school which holds their endless letters, term dates, meal menus etc
I photo all my receipts and important paperwork and it's searchable in the app so easy to find"

I'd love to know more about this. I'm trying to be more organised but also a budding/wannabe/cowardly novelist and I'd like to work on my phone if inspiration hits. Notes app is ok but it's WAY to easy to accidentally delete!

Facebook - I'm an ex army brat and dads side all military so family & friends are scattered far and wide. Even several of my "civvy" friends are either expats or emigrants. So it's great for staying in touch and seeing their growing families etc FB gets derided but as anything it's HOW you use it. No drama queens on my friends list, I'm on a few political interest pages but they're closed groups so it's not clogging others feeds, I've 2 other friends who are as passionate about politics as me although we have VERY different allegiances! Which can be interesting, but we're respectful and its good to not have an echo chamber. I've only deleted one friend (an old classmate not that close) just prior to brexit vote who started posting Britain first bollocks and similar. And my sister who I'm nc with for reasons outside Facebook.

Twitter - is very good for consumer issues, I also follow some Celebs who are very good at being witty in 140 ch or less 😂 and I also like it for political stuff as again, no echo chamber get all sorts of opinions.

Mn - I came to the app by default when site wasn't working, wasn't keen at first now I love it.

I keep meaning to get into audible and have even started threads about it but I can't seem to get on with it.

Lushlemming · 30/01/2019 08:13

Vehicle Smart

It's addictive. It tells you all about people's cars. You can see the mileage, the MOT history for EVERY test and all advisories. It tells you if a car is insured, taxed, SORN, it shows the exact make, model, engine, emission standards.

You can really worry people by casually mentioning stuff about their car! Grin

PoohBearsHole · 30/01/2019 08:13

Graphista - audible is fantastic and an app that changed my life!!! I often don’t sleep well and it has helped. I enjoy doing more than one thing and discovered listening to a book (avid reader) was just as exciting and I could do the gardening at the same time. Win win!

BrusselPout · 30/01/2019 08:16

Todoist - to do list app where I can allocate tasks to other family members 😂

Stocard
I can't believe that nobody else has mentioned this, it has transformed my life! You load your loyalty cards (all big coffee shops, supermarkets, hotel chains etc are on there) onto the app and then open it to scan when shopping. You'll always have the correct card with you so always get the points/discount - it really is the way forward!!! It also means that you don't have to carry all your cards with you which will save your purse from bursting! The only card that doesn't always work is the M&S Sparks card, but I've never worked out what you get with that card out anyway.

BitOutOfPractice · 30/01/2019 12:41

Oh Lionfish that sounds fab. Thanks for the tip

When I said MyFitnessPal it really did change my life. Lost 4 stone using it

torthecatlady · 30/01/2019 12:55

I forgot about WhatsApp. It's brilliant.

ItsNotNormalLove · 30/01/2019 15:31

Most of what I use has already been mentioned but I really like an app called 1SE. It stands for one second every day. You record a one second video each day (of anything - what you're doing, where you are, people you're with etc) and then it puts them all into one bigger video. So you can watch this month's video or the whole year's or all the time you've been using it. And you can share them. It's really good fun! Smile

FightList is a good one if you like trivia quizzes, it pits you against other people and is quite addictive.

WTForecast always makes me laugh. Sweary weather reports and very accurate.

Medisafe is good for keeping track of taking your medications and medical appointments.

ItsNotNormalLove · 30/01/2019 15:33

(Re previous post - none of those have actually changed my life, they're just good!)

BloddersMum · 30/01/2019 15:44

BBC sounds. All of bbc radio in one place. So far really pleased with it as you can quickly download and I'm really lazy with loading my phone with music Blush.

Wallywobbles · 30/01/2019 15:51

Evernote, multi banking app, Waze, WhatsApp, Clue

BarbaraofSevillle · 30/01/2019 15:52

I found BBC Sounds really hard to get on with and the reviews are awful. People hate it.

I use Antennapod for my podcasts - subscribe and new episodes are automatically downloaded onto my phone when on wifi, and am hanging onto BBC Radio Player for the BBC programmes I like that don't appear to be on podcast. I don't know what I'll do if the BBC podcasts are only available from BBC Sounds.

Wallywobbles · 30/01/2019 15:53
