What do you think of Joyce as a name?

I like it.

It has a slightly sad edge for me because it's what Anne of Green Gables and Gilbert Blythe named their first child, who died soon after birth Sad

Sparklingbrook · 29/01/2019 10:10

Reminds me of maybe a character in a 70s sitcom. From my Mum's era, and she's late 70s.

But if you like it...

FissionChips · 29/01/2019 10:10

Every Joyce I’ve known has been a lovely person, I like it for that reason.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 29/01/2019 10:14

Prefer Joy.

maras2 · 29/01/2019 10:22

Ahh. My late lovely Mother in Law's name.
She'd have been 97 this week. Halo
Nice name though, quite a few of the DGGD's and DGGN's have it for a second name. Smile

DippyAvocado · 29/01/2019 10:25

DGMs name so I am fond of it for that reason but not keen on the name itself. I thought about giving it to DD as a middle name but it seemed a bit too old fashioned. I expect there will be a "wartime" names revival in 10 years or so.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 29/01/2019 10:28

Every Joyce I’ve known has been a lovely person, I like it for that reason.

Funnily enough, two of the least joyful people I have ever met have been called Joyce. It's a name I've always really disliked. Sorry OP!

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 29/01/2019 10:28

My nan was called Joyce and she was the nicest persin

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 29/01/2019 10:28

Person!

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 29/01/2019 10:30

It’s a bit Brenda, Maureen, Elaine, Rita type name to me.

MaudebeGonne · 29/01/2019 10:32

My youngest has Joyce as her middle name after my husband's Nan. Who was lovely.

weebarra · 29/01/2019 10:37

Never met a nasty Joyce. And it was buffy's Mum's name.

EngagedAgain · 29/01/2019 10:38

Agree with great duck, but it's not a bad one out of an old fashioned bunch. It's up to you OP. Personally I'm not keen but been skewed by someone who I weren't keen on, and for good reason. I like the name Joy but reminds me of Joyce.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 29/01/2019 10:38

i tend to judge names on whether id like to be called it- i wouldnt like to be called Joyce, sounds very "old woman-y" imo.

Iwantacampervan · 29/01/2019 11:56

Grenfell or Mrs Barnaby the first (Midsomer)

It is still in the realms of 'older lady name' for me - to be played by Anne Reid in a drama/sit com.

cafesociety · 29/01/2019 12:10

I like Joy, it's a name in the family. But not Joyce so much.

Clawdy · 29/01/2019 12:49

Old fashioned, and not particularly attractive name. I was at school in the sixties with girls called Joyce, Valerie, Jean, Carol, Janet, Sheila......All sound much too old fashioned and plain ( including my own name!)

DappledThings · 29/01/2019 13:09

It has a slightly sad edge for me because it's what Anne of Green Gables and Gilbert Blythe named their first child, who died soon after birth

Wasn't that Joy rather than Joyce? Because she had brought them joy in her very short life.

AndItStillSaidFourOfTwo · 29/01/2019 13:31

DappledThings - just checked my copy and it's 'Joyce, Joy for short' apparently.

LilouBlue · 29/01/2019 13:32

If I'd had a daughter she would have had Joy as a middle name, after her Great Grandma Joyce. Much prefer Joy!

DappledThings · 29/01/2019 13:32

Ah, I didn't remember that. I stand corrected.

Beerflavourednipples · 29/01/2019 13:41

It's actually a nice name objectively, but it immediately conjures up an image of a large breasted lady in her 60s, with grey curly hair, who works as a GPs receptionist. Friends with Shirley and Brenda, married to someone called Derek.

There is nothing wrong with any of that of course, but I'm not sure I would choose it for a new baby.

Aventurine · 29/01/2019 13:43

Much prefer Joy

shiveringtimber · 29/01/2019 14:47

Ah, interesting. It's my DM's given name and she has always hated it with a passion. I never understood why because I quite like it. She's 80, btw.
