Someone hit my parked car

A young girl has hit my parked car when we wasn’t home, when we arrived she knocked on our door immediately and told us what happened, there was damage to the left back corner of the car it was a pretty bad dent I will attach picture.

She said she lived a couple doors down and gave us her number she begged us not to make a claim because of course her insurance will go up.

So we was calm and said ok we’ll get a price and let you know, but as I was driving I heard a slight funny sound in the engine and so I thought my car was obviously hit with some force ?

Luckily we have cameras outside the house which shows the way she irresponsibly reversed so fast into my car! She clearly cannot drive! That’s why the engine is obviously making a sound.
I think she only owned up to it because we have cameras outside the house!

So if I make a claim will it affect my insurance as well or .. ?

Yes. Both of you will face higher premiums. If she can pay for it to get fixed then that would be better for both of you.

DeRigueurMortis · 28/01/2019 15:28

I'd be very surprised if an impact to the back of your car was sufficient to damage the engine, based on the pictures you posted.

It may have caused an issue with wheel alignment however.

You need to get the car seen by a professional to ascertain the extent of the damage.

Personally I'd go through insurance - it's what it's there for. You don't want to get into arguments with this driver about what they are liable for or where you car gets repaired etc etc

If her premiums are an issue then she should perhaps consider driving more carefully.

LIZS · 28/01/2019 15:29

A rear impact should not affect the engine itself though. More likely bodywork, wheel arch or alignment has been damaged.

SillySallySingsSongs · 28/01/2019 15:29

I would claim on insurance.

LKRJM · 28/01/2019 15:31

Take it to a garage for a full once over. Get a quote on paper and see if she can pay. If not go through insurance. But be quick. The longer you leave it )if it ends up going through insurance) the longer you’ll wait for your money.

You can’t reallt complain that she came and told you even if it was only because of your cameras, because ultimately she did the right thing. As for her ‘clearly not being able to drive’ you don’t know that. You’ve saw 20 seconds of an unfortunate incident which she has owned up to. She’s young and has offered to pay, I’d say giving her that opportunity is the right thing to do, that said, if you don’t want to then go through your insurance but don’t go and assume all these things about her.

TheQueef · 28/01/2019 15:32

Was she driving a tank?
The engine is at the front.
Even for non fault claims there is an increase in premium so it will go up however insurance companies insist on knowing about all accidents so you should be notifying them anyway.

Canttouchthiss · 28/01/2019 15:48

We’ve checked the footage and the car had been hit pretty hard and it also rolled foward that’s probably why we can hear a noise.
She’s going of to her country tomorrow for a funeral so she said she’ll deal with it when she gets back which is making us feel bad.. but I don’t want to leave it till later?

Seriously, just go through your insurance.

ShalomJackie · 28/01/2019 16:19

Go through insurance.

If she suddenly says that is higher than I thought I can't pay that, won't cover car hire whilst it is in (it always takes longer than you think especially if paintwork/respray etc needed).

It shoukd not affecr your premium for a hit whilst parkwd claim especially if you have a protexted ncb anyway.

xJune88 · 28/01/2019 16:24

Go through insurance this was me in October my parked car was hit from back. Damage was similar to yours but all under car was damaged badly what couldn't be seen. Don't drive car. Ring insurance and they should provide courtesy car. My premiums and no claims haven't been effected because I wasn't even in the car x

ChairinSage · 28/01/2019 16:25

Her increased premium is not your problem. Definitely go through the insurance and keep it above board - she may decide not to pay out if you get it fixed privately and then you are out of pocket.

An elderly lady hit my parked car last year. She begged me not to go through the insurance as she was worried that she wouldn't be able to get reinsured. Initially I agreed as it looked like it was just a wing mirror but after closer inspection there was quite a lot of damage to the body work.

KitKat1985 · 28/01/2019 16:30

I had something very similar happen to me last year, with a guy kitting my parked car. Guy only stopped as he was seen doing it, and knew he had been seen. He gave me his details and asked if we could sort it between us and I said okay, although I was wary. We agreed a price to cover the damage but after nearly a month of excuses as to why he couldn't pay this week or ignoring my calls, I lost patience and put a claim in on my insurance. Cheeky bugger had not only not paid me, but also put a claim on for the damage to his car on his insurance saying someone had hit him in a car park and then driven off. It's still unresolved as (unsurprisingly) he refuses now to speak to his insurance company (which he defrauded) but my insurance company have paid out in the meanwhile as I have plenty of evidence (text messages from him, and photos of the incident when it happened) so it hasn't affected my no claims, and my insurance premium when I renewed afterwards wasn't substantially different.

Summary: Don't fall for the sob story and just go through your insurance.

KitKat1985 · 28/01/2019 16:31

*hitting not kitting!

KitKat1985 · 28/01/2019 16:35

I'd also say if she is young she might be quite niave as to the cost of repairs for that sort of damage, particularly if it has caused more than just cosmetic damage.

Ffsnosexallowed · 28/01/2019 16:35

Go through your insurance. A young driver hit me a couple of years ago. Admitted it was his fault, begged me not to go through insurance. When I sent quote for damage he refused to pay it. When I went to my insurance he had put in a claim against me!! Luckily I'd kept all the text messages and had photos of the damage. CF

TheLostTargaryen · 28/01/2019 16:36

I'm afraid it has to be an insurance thing. It's a pretty hard hit if it's shunted your car forward and even a tap in the wrong place can damage more than you realise. A crack in a bumper for example may look cosmetic and no big deal but the brackets could be snapped and it's the cost of a whole new bumper for you down the line.

Someone wrote my car off when parked outside my house, he blacked out and hit it full pelt,
His insurance covered everything including voluntary access, because my car was parked with no one in it he took full responsibility for it and my insurance said it shoul not impact me has solely his fault

MummaGiles · 28/01/2019 16:58

You still need to notify your insurance even if you don’t claim through it. Not doing so could allow them to avoid any future claims.

Jaxhog · 28/01/2019 17:05

Insurance!!! That's why you have it.

She's about to leave the country - who knows when she'll be back. Even if she return's soon, a family member or friend may pursuade her that she doesn't have to pay. Even if she still agrees, she may dispute your estimate.

Redglitter · 28/01/2019 17:15

For that damage id definitely go through your insurance. Thats what youve got it for.

TheQueef · 28/01/2019 17:17

Those who believe it doesn't affect future premiums try doing a comparison with and without the non fault claim.
I think you will be disappointed.

ChikiTIKI · 28/01/2019 18:35

You need to inform your insurance people today, give all the details of the person who hit your car etc. You can then get back to them about whether you are making a claim or not. I'm pretty sure you have to notify them or your insurance might get invalidated.

Fleetwoodsnack · 28/01/2019 18:39

Go through your insurance- as it's no fault they'll cover a courtesy car for you while it's fixed.

Grace212 · 28/01/2019 18:39

you do need to do this through insurance IMHO, safest way

it will go up a bit - I hope not a lot. The way it was phrased to me when someone hit my car was "It's a no-claim bonus, not a no-blame bonus".

I also think insurance is the easiest way tbh.
