Baby has a temperature - When to worry?

I'm really feeling quite clueless because my son is 14 months old and it's the first time he's been unwell.

Yesterday he was very 'easily upset' and wouldn't stop crying at one point. That all changed come 7pm (the unwell thing started at about 4.30pm). He went to sleep.

He woke up at about 11pm last night, he could've easily gone back to sleep but he was boiling hot! I brought him down to watch the rest of the film with me and DH. He just lay in my arms silently watching the film... I found it really strange. He's extremely lively and he's never just sat and watched something before. I gave calpol and we went to bed.

I woke him again at 5am because he was absolutely boiling again. He's just woken again now and still, temp hasn't changed. Boiling again and in my arms half asleep, fading into the distance with his eyes. It's horrible to see.

When do you start to panic and act on these sort of symptoms? I really don't know Blush

His feet are a lot cooler than the rest of him and have been since last night, but by no means stone cold.

I've checked for a suspicious looking rash and there isn't one, just a bit of what I think could be skin change looks wise because of how hot he is.

Hope he's soon better and you can all go home x

thaegumathteth · 28/01/2019 21:34

Oh OP it’s not silly to cry at all. I remember when ds was 2 weeks he needed a cannula. I felt rage towards the poor doctors who were only doing their best!

It sounds like he’s a real little trooper. Hope this antibiotics kick in very quickly for him.

bobstersmum · 28/01/2019 22:13

Really hoping for a massive improvement tomorrow, it just goes to show its best to get checked out, you did the right thing I bet you're thanking God you did!

Quartz2208 · 28/01/2019 22:33

Iv antibiotics work wonders (DS has also done that with scarlet fever and non blanching rash)

SouthernComforts · 28/01/2019 22:37

Good instincts there OP, and you're in the best place now. Make sure you eat, drink and try to get some sleep tonight, or at least some fresh air outside.

HettyPain · 28/01/2019 22:46

Really hope he's better very soon. Must be so frightening for you, as well as horrible for him Flowers

SpeedyBojangles · 28/01/2019 22:51

Oh OP how terrifying for you Thanks

Well done for trusting your instincts and getting him seen right away. He's in the absolute best place and sounds like he's getting the treatment he needs quickly.

Sending hugs xxx

I had a similar scare with DD3 when she was younger. Still don’t know what is was but those IV abx worked wonders and she got better so quickly. Hope your DS is the same. And yes please try and eat and drink a bit. Hope your night is ok. Flowers

dontknowwhattodo80 · 28/01/2019 23:13

Hello all, thank you for all the support Thanks

DS was treated from the get go for meningitis. I was told it's like a 'Domestos' for serious illness, and treats everything from the most serious to the less so.

DS's bloods were mixed up three times. We didn't get any results at all until yesterday evening. I was reassured that afternoon though... He was stuffing his face with crisps and luzozade sport Grin

But still incredibly lethargic and attached to my breasts. He woke up just now at 10.30am.

The culprit of all of this is Influenza. It's got into his lungs and made him quite poorly, dehydrated, etc. I would never have guessed it. He had zero symptoms of a cold... no cough or cold.

He went home at 11pm.

We are back in today at 2pm for more antibiotics through his vein. He was sent home ambulated (with a canula in), and it's been a nightmare not letting him pull it!

I can't even describe how painful it was for my heart to see him being canulated over and over. He's got over 7 holes in him where they tried all his different hands and feet but it either didn't work or went in and then swelled so it had to be taken off. He's been sent home with one on the side of his foot in a very awkward place. Holding him down was horrendous. It truly was Sad Plus all the pricks to get blood from him... He screams every time a nurse comes near him.

Very good to hear from you, was checking regularly for updates. Your poor little one sounds like he is having a terrible time but glad to hear he is on crisps and lucozade😊

HalfBloodPrincess · 30/01/2019 11:19

Aww what an absolute little darling!
I’m so pleased he’s on the mend. Take comfort in the fact he won’t remember none of this (although I’m sure it will be etched on your brain forever 😢)

CallingFromLondon · 30/01/2019 11:35

Thank you Thanks

I realise my last reply was quite miserable Blush I don't mean to sound ungrateful about him being home!

I'm just so drained from him being prodded and upset. I'm over the moon that he's recovering well of course. He's doing so so well.

Stuffing of face has continued this morning with pineapple chunks, cheese and toast! I was even going to order us in McDonald's breakfasts but realised he didn't get up until 10.30 so too late Envy

So happy that he's on the mend what a brave boy.

MamaRaisingBoys · 30/01/2019 12:35

I’m so glad to hear he’s home and on the mend.

Make sure you try and take care of you too, I know too well how exhausting it is Flowers

Bobfossil2 · 30/01/2019 14:30

What an ordeal! So glad to read your update- you need a large glass of wine after all that.

Xmastummyhasgonebig · 30/01/2019 15:45

Poor little darling, so glad it’s been treated though

Natsku · 30/01/2019 20:07

Glad he's getting better and it wasn't meningitis

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 30/01/2019 22:40

Great news. Hopefully he is well on the mend Smile
