Baby has a temperature - When to worry?

I'm really feeling quite clueless because my son is 14 months old and it's the first time he's been unwell.

Yesterday he was very 'easily upset' and wouldn't stop crying at one point. That all changed come 7pm (the unwell thing started at about 4.30pm). He went to sleep.

He woke up at about 11pm last night, he could've easily gone back to sleep but he was boiling hot! I brought him down to watch the rest of the film with me and DH. He just lay in my arms silently watching the film... I found it really strange. He's extremely lively and he's never just sat and watched something before. I gave calpol and we went to bed.

I woke him again at 5am because he was absolutely boiling again. He's just woken again now and still, temp hasn't changed. Boiling again and in my arms half asleep, fading into the distance with his eyes. It's horrible to see.

When do you start to panic and act on these sort of symptoms? I really don't know Blush

His feet are a lot cooler than the rest of him and have been since last night, but by no means stone cold.

I've checked for a suspicious looking rash and there isn't one, just a bit of what I think could be skin change looks wise because of how hot he is.

Baby has a temperature - When to worry?

Give No he doesn't perk up after the Calpol (it's Calpol but it says ibuprofen on the box) Hmm Strange. I thought Calpol was paracetamol

A random question - but if he is 14 months has he recently had his mmr? Could be a minor reaction?

widgetbeana · 28/01/2019 10:52

Calpol make calprofen which is their ibruprofen. The bottle look similar.

Try and find some paracetamol as it is often better from temperature depending in the initial cause.

Just remember to eat and drink yourself too, I have ended up with dehydration headaches and shakes when my kids are ill. Because I forgot to eat or drink!

How did it go at the doctors?

CallingFromLondon · 28/01/2019 13:34

Hi all, thank you for the support Thanks

We are in hospital. DS's temp is now 41 and not coming down after medication. Just waiting to see a Consultant.

I myself feel like I'm about to pass out. I feel faint, dizzy and sick. I feel like I'm going to vomit from dizziness. widge I think you're spot on

HalfBlood how did it go for you?

christmaschristmaschristmas · 28/01/2019 13:39

He's in the best place he can possibly be OP.

I hope he is okay. Hugs to you.

Take care of yourself. Have you had anything to eat or drink this morning? Ask the nurses to get you something, there is often stuff in the parents room.

MadeForThis · 28/01/2019 13:49

Hope all goes well. Just remember that ibuprofen needs to be spaced out more than calpol. Think it's every 8 hours.

Quartz2208 · 28/01/2019 13:52

Yes get something to eat and drink - it could also be anxiety as I find that does it for me as well

The times DS has had it they have never actually figured out what caused it - the second time we were on holiday in Austria and he ended up in a clinic not being able to leave until his temp was down. It took a huge amount of medication to do so (ibuprofen) and then managed by some double the strength of calpol paracetamol (all carefully laid out in dosages for 24 hours for me to give)

The next day he was a lot better and was back to his normal self the day after. He had even had a fit caused by the temperature

bobstersmum · 28/01/2019 14:02

Sorry to hear that op! Hope they get to the bottom of it soon and get him on the mend.

ohfourfoxache · 28/01/2019 15:09

Oh bugger Sad

You’re definitely in the right place, but it’s such a worry when they’re unwell (both mine have had temperatures of 40+ this weekend, thankfully controlled with calpol - there is so much going around at the moment)

Hope you get some answers soon x

Realitea · 28/01/2019 15:26

My daughter always had temps of around 40 when she was younger and not well. He doctor said to go by how they are in themselves aswell, not to just go by the temperature.
And I get the shakes/dizzy/sick when in stressful situations like you’re in too. Just remember to eat/drink, rest when you can. It will get better.
Let us know how you get on

HalfBloodPrincess · 28/01/2019 16:07

@CallingFromLondon bless you for asking.

Ds was diagnosed with a fever of unknown location and we were sent home to rest, just plenty of fluids and alternate calpol/ibuprofen (yes it’s 3 times a day/8 hourly for ibuprofen), with a follow up appointment on Thursday to see if he’s improved.

Wishing your baba a speedy recovery x

CallingFromLondon · 28/01/2019 16:52

He's being treated for suspected meningitis and sepsis. None fading rash has appeared, not really sure what to say or do.

He's had some emergency bloods - Dr also wants lumber puncture and chest scan.

No change in temperature.

I know he's in the right place at hospital.

Quartz I can't imagine that happening abroad! Must've been hideous.

HalfBlood I've been thinking of your bub too. I'm so glad it's nothing too bad. Lots of cuddles and CBeebies if he likes it Thanks

Vika1985 · 28/01/2019 17:21

Hope you are ok, op. That sounds very scary. You are in the best place. Hope he makes a speedy recovery xx

HalfBloodPrincess · 28/01/2019 17:34

Oh no @CallingFromLondon how awful for him. Poor little baba.
Do you have any real life support?

I’ll probably be up all night so feel free to pm me if you need someone to chat to. Sending you all lots of love x

thaegumathteth · 28/01/2019 17:42

Hope he’s ok OP - is he on intravenous antibiotics? Sending you lots of positive thoughts - is dh with you?

ForTheLoveOfDoughnuts · 28/01/2019 18:21

I really hope your LO is okay OP x

CallingFromLondon · 28/01/2019 18:23

Thank you Thanks

HalfBlood bless you, thank you so much. I do indeed, husband and my mum. DH's mum is currently very upset with me because I didn't ring to tell her, but I can't do everything perfectly. I'm trying my very best. How is your little one?

thae He's on antibiotics (strong ones) right now. Apparently these would be used to treat the most scary possibilities anyway, so it's a good start. He perked up slightly when we came onto the ward. He's eaten a jar of baby food fruits and sat up. Back asleep now though. Not heard back from bloods yet.

Forgot to add, it took a few attempts of putting a canula needle in his little hands before they finally decided to put it in his arm Sad I had to hold him down. Sounds silly but I had to fight back the tears.

Then a random toddler threw back his curtain and said "Hellooo!" And he was very 'Hmm' and 'ConfusedAngry' looking at him, all whilst another needle was being put through. It was quite comical x

OP posts:
BitOfAKerfuffle · 28/01/2019 19:26

Oh OP im here hand holding been through similar when my dc was about 9 months old. Trying to canulate was a nightmare and they ended up having to site it in the scalp i had to leave the room it was absolutely horrific to watch.
Hes in the best place now. Make sure you get something to eat or a very sugary tea for yourself !

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 28/01/2019 19:29

Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear this. It’s my worst nightmare
He is definitely in the right place. Hopefully those strong antibiotics will get to work really fast.
Mind yourself too Flowers

PurpleWithRed · 28/01/2019 19:34

Flowers and hugs

Cantchooseaname · 28/01/2019 19:37

So glad you are in hospital, it’s terrifying. Hope you and the little one have a quiet night.

Natsku · 28/01/2019 19:46

Oh no calling how terrifying! I'm glad you took him in, and he's being taken care of now. Hope you are managing to take care of yourself too and have eaten. Hope tomorrow brings better news and a perkier baby.

MamaRaisingBoys · 28/01/2019 20:29

Oh no poor baby Sad we’ve been through the same thing, twice, but ds was only 6 and 8 weeks old so luckily had no awareness and that was awful enough.

Fingers crossed if it is the worst case, it’s been caught soon enough and he’ll be perked up before you know it.

Will be thinking of you Flowers
