Nothing compares 2 U is not about a controlling partner.

I've just been having a look and it seems that Prince may have written 'Nothing compared 2 U' about giving up cigarettes, or possibly about his personal assistant leaving. O'Connor may have had her mother in mind when singing it. But the lyrics still very strongly suggest an abusive relationship.
