Martial law in the event of a no deal Brexit?

Seriously? Seriously? This is the UK for Christ sake. Has this ever been done before? And what government comes riding in at the back of the army? It is starting to feel like 1930s nazi germany. I find this prospect terrifying

Where have you heard this?

Sassidgeroll · 27/01/2019 10:32

Classic FM for fuck sake
It's all over the news

ManicUnicorn · 27/01/2019 10:44

Classic FM. That fountain of all knowledge....

whenthewhistleblows · 27/01/2019 10:44

Sky news.

Abra1de · 27/01/2019 10:45

In The Sunday Times, too.

Bowchicawowow · 27/01/2019 10:48

The press love a sensational story. Meanwhile in France they are still rioting.

NeverTwerkNaked · 27/01/2019 10:49

Surely no one is surprised by this? There have already been several discussions (that I have seen) on here of people in the civil service/ military explaining that they are being asked to completely change role etc to assist with anticipated no deal Brexit chaos.

Moussemoose · 27/01/2019 10:50

Don't worry everyone this thread will be moved soon!

God forbid an issue like the U.K. planning for marshal law should on one of the main boards. It's not like it's a major issue in the country. It's not as if it is one of the most significant events of our life time.

Hide Brexit before it happens.

WheelyCote · 27/01/2019 10:55

Martial law, what the hell

UnderMajorDomoMinor · 27/01/2019 10:57

I can only read the first part of the article, but what it says is that the civil service has been gaming martial law. That’s very different to both this thread and the tone of the article. They need to game scenarios to work out what is viable and what isn’t. You can’t rule in or out martial law without gaming it first ‘minister we recommend no martial law.’ ‘Why?’ ‘Just a hunch.’ Gaming and planning are different.

WheelyCote · 27/01/2019 11:00

I was quite chilled about Brexit, not that I'm happy about it

But its starting to get scary. Where's the stockpiling threads

GhostofFrankGrimes · 27/01/2019 11:01

They need to game scenarios to work out what is viable and what isn’t.

Surely the issue is; how did a country manage to vote itself into a situation were martial law is even being considered/gamed/planned?

wowfudge · 27/01/2019 11:04

Using the term "gaming" trivialises what is in fact scenario planning.

NeverTwerkNaked · 27/01/2019 11:05

Exactly GhostofFrank

Huge resources being poured into planning for dire situations in the event of a no deal Brexit. Yet the Govt still hasn’t ruled it out. Ffs.

Moussemoose · 27/01/2019 11:05

Well it's ok if they are only gaming.

This is the U.K. in 2019 good god!

The civil service is gaming martial law because we might crash out of the EU and end up with economic chaos so severe there is civil disobedience.

Even if there is only a 1% possibility it is really shocking that as a nation we have got ourselves into a place where that is even a possibility. This is really, truly shocking. Even if there is only a small chance this will be needed we need to take a long hard look at how we got to this place.

Sassidgeroll · 27/01/2019 11:15

Gaming? Gaming? My point is, i was sitting up in bed, sunny Sunday morning, drinking my coffee, listening to John Suchet or whoever banging on about Chopin, as you do, the next thing the news comes on and they're blithely telling us that martial law is a possibility in 6 weeks time.

It shouldn't even BE a possibility. I'm not prepping, I'm not stitching body bags here, but this is insane.

I just think of all the ordinary people over Europe hearing of the Munich putsch and going, ah it's all scare mongering, we'll be alright

OP posts:
Burpsandfustles · 27/01/2019 11:20

The government job is to cover all eventualities, look at all outcomes and prepare for them. I know in recent tomes the government has not done that but its what it's supposed to do..

It would be far worse to have civil disorder and no plans from the the government.

And yes to put things in perspective... Look to France.. How many weeks now of major civil unrest! We have had some marches on both sides over brexit! Nothing compared to what's been going on in France!

Burpsandfustles · 27/01/2019 11:23

Op I feel the people in Europe are more worried about their immediate problems. Banks empty on point of collapse in Italy, five star movement... Rise of far right in Germany, far right in Austria.. The antics of oban Hungary... Problems with Russia, and as pp mentioned massive civil unrest in France...

Moussemoose · 27/01/2019 11:23

And since when have we been France!

Comparing ourselves to France in terms of civil disobedience isn't setting the bar that high is it?

This shouldn't even be on the table. It shouldn't be a possibility. It shouldn't even be a twinkle in a gamers eye.

AwdBovril · 27/01/2019 11:24

Lots of people will say it's Project Fear. And then if it does happen, they'll say "But this is Britain!" in astonishment, as if Things Like That only happen in other countries where other, lesser people live.

Because nothing bad happens here. Certainly no-one freezes to death on the streets or dies when their benefits are withdrawn. It couldn't happen here.

Tippexy · 27/01/2019 11:25

😂

Juells · 27/01/2019 11:30

I'm not prepping

How come you're not prepping? The British Army has spent £28million prepping in case of a No Deal, so why not you?

wobytide · 27/01/2019 11:33

Theresa May could appoint a Minister for Hunger Games and 51.9% of people would shrug and accept it. Country is officially bonkers

mpsw · 27/01/2019 11:37

The Times really should know better.

The Civil Contingencies Act it cites is the legal framework for the Government to assign the military to other (normally civil) duties when there is an emergency.

It is most emphatically nit the imposition of martial law! The government remains the government and the military will continue to obey legal orders, including those to provide military aid to the Covina authorities.
