Martial law in the event of a no deal Brexit?

Seriously? Seriously? This is the UK for Christ sake. Has this ever been done before? And what government comes riding in at the back of the army? It is starting to feel like 1930s nazi germany. I find this prospect terrifying

How many weeks now of major civil unrest! We have had some marches on both sides over brexit!

Nice downplaying there. Female MP's being screamed at by a baying mob. The far right march on the streets of London on a regular basis now - completely emboldened by the Brexit clusterfuck. A female MP was murdered just days before the referendum.

This is alot different from the riots of 2011 and indeed what is happening in France now.

The British Army has spent £28million prepping in case of a No Deal, so why not you?

28 million? Wow!

Oh wait. Our total defence budget last year was £37 billion plus or minus some change. The army spending a few hundredths of a percent of that prepping for Brexit hardly suggests they are overly concerned.

when there is an emergency

So there is a possibility of significant civil emergency and we are quibbling about the name given to the military becoming involved in civilian life to maintain order.

The military may have to be on the streets of the U.K.

Think about that. The military on the streets.

Even if this is a tiny possibility, minuscule, no much chance at all, it is shocking it is even being discussed in the U.K. in 2019.

What is martial law? There were changes a decade ago, so it's different from WW2.

meditrina · 27/01/2019 11:45

The military preparing to assist the civil powers = prepping (just like they do for firefighter strikes, foot and mouth, the Olympics - it's the same law for all those things and Brexit)

There's going to be military law = scaremongering (not least mecasue it's inaccurate, though I suppose it makes a catchy headline)

It suggests its a waste of money particularly when the money could be better spent elsewhere.

Oh I don't know. Thinking of what they could possibly spend 28m on Brexit-related I suspect they've made sure the officers messes aren't going to run short of wine. Money well spent I'd say.

Troops on the streets in England? This isn't Northern Ireland pre the Good Friday Agreement.

Oh hang on......!
