What was the last book you read that you loved but made you cry?

OP posts:
Heyha · 26/01/2019 19:35

The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns but not the third one in the series- couldn't get into that as much.
I think the Lovely Bones might have been a tearjerker but equally I might be mixing it up with the Time Travellers Wife as read then both on the same long trip 😂

The book thief

useyourimagination · 26/01/2019 19:39

Private Peaceful - Michael Morpurgo, tears every time
Uncle Tom's Cabin - Harriet Beecher Stowe, DO NOT READ THE END IN PUBLIC

Lovely Bones

The Love Song Of Miss Queenie Hennessy, a side book to The Unlikely pilgrimage of Harold Fry, not highbrow, but oh such an emotional read of with held emotions and unacknowledged feelings, being overlooked and yet being such a kind person. I bawled my eyes out at it.

Also A God In Ruins to read if the rich life and then the ending of a decent man, beautiful. Strangely I read it after my dad died and it didn't have the same effect.

The five people you meet in heaven

floridaflorida · 26/01/2019 20:41

The paper Dolls. DD is 9 and we still read it together and I still cry!

MissMarplesKnitting · 26/01/2019 20:44

Me before you. Read before the film came out and sobbed at it.
Kite Runner

notanothergreyplease · 26/01/2019 21:07

@MissMarplesKnitting I read Me Before You on a packed bus on my way to a training day for work, I sobbed on the busBlush

The First Last Kiss I read this when I’d finished work for Mat leave but before I gave birth, I remember sitting up in bed till about three in the morning jst to finish it and crying

The Green Mile got me too

None are particularly hard going to read but all made me cry

elQuintoConyo · 26/01/2019 21:11

The last in the Margaret Atwood trilogy, Maddadam. Bawled like a fucking baby! Cried and cried and cried.

Onlyaprawn · 26/01/2019 21:15

A man called Ove. Laughed a lot too. Great book.

cantfindname · 26/01/2019 21:59

Onlyaprawn I was laughing and crying at the same time at a Man Called Ove. Brilliant book. I passed it on to my neighbour and she loved it too.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 26/01/2019 22:02

Goodnight mister Tom I loved this book as a child and cried rereading it recently! Such a good book.

RedHatsDoNotSuitMe · 26/01/2019 22:39

Can't remember the last one, but I also cried at The Kite Runner
Felt embarrassed because it's quite naff, but cried at P.S I love You

Loads of children's books. DD barely heard The Cat Mummy (Jacqueline Wilson) for the sobbing (both me and DH) and has never heard Don't Let Go (can't remember the author) to the end as neither DH or I could ever finish it.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 26/01/2019 22:44

A Little Life - felt really down after reading it

The Kite Runner

Giovanni’s Room

Of Mice and Men

BirthdayCakes · 26/01/2019 22:45

I literally sobbed at the end of Atonement - I had no idea what was coming..

Villette too, if you want something more highbrow.. It slowly and very thoroughly breaks your heart..

SparklyPusscatMug · 26/01/2019 23:56

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, earlier today. Absolutely loved reading it.

WhatwouldCJdo · 27/01/2019 00:24

All Quiet on the Western Front

Read it years ago because I had to and surpised myself by loving it. Recently given my copy to my 13yr old, so I re- read it first.

temperancefugit · 27/01/2019 00:35

I found the ending of The Age of Innocence very moving.

StableGenius · 27/01/2019 00:38

Helen Burns in Jane Eyre makes me cry from start to finish. A brilliant girl who was never loved (except by Jane).

HerondaleDucks · 27/01/2019 00:43

Recent books I've read that made me cry.
Flowers for Algernon, what a heart breaking ending

Flawed by Cecelia Ahern. Oh my lord it made me sob and sob and sob in the first 100 pages.

A light between the Ocean made me cry rather a lot too.

I've cried at many more but those are my most recent.

hazandduck · 27/01/2019 01:02

@birthdaycakes I came on here to say Villette. I was utterly broken when I finished that! Makes you wonder how much was actually true, isn’t it supposedly a little autobiographical? Was so in love with M.Paul by the end.

I cry at a lot of books! Captain Corelli’s Mandolin - the chapter “Pelagia’s Lament,” and the whole ending I was just bawling.

Birdsong
Summer Sisters
Watership Down
The Amber Spyglass (read all His Dark Materials though to get the full effect!)

Oh and On Green Dolphin Street. I’ve read almost all the suggestions on here and yep shed tear at pretty much all of them 🙈🤧

hazandduck · 27/01/2019 01:04

@temperancefugit oh goodness yes. Such a waste of true love! But unavoidable.

Wincarnis · 27/01/2019 03:49

Charlotte’s Web

brizzledrizzle · 27/01/2019 04:11

Yay to Charlotte's Web. Also The Bunker Diaries.
