A week in June - where do you go?

DH and I aren't into resorts, but we do love a bit of sunshine, a mix of urban and outdoor activities and most of all, good food. We'd prefer not to have to rent a car and somewhere not hugely crowded. Our last holiday was to Seville and Granada and we absolutely loved it, if that's any indication of what we like.

Any ideas? Grin

Just for an alternative point of view, and to show how one person's idea of lovely isn't he easily the same as someone else's, have to say I was very underwhelmed by both Lisbon and Cascais. There were nice bits, but overall feeling of being scruffy and run down and the food was nothing special. I know others have a different opinion.

Italy is great for trains, sunshine and lovely food and ice cream so would go there. Some Ryanair flights were amazingly cheap to there. We did Rome - Florence - Pisa by train pre kids and believe also connects to Venice (though check). Loved Rome, Pisa great for a day and loved Venice. Not the cheapest place for hotels though. We stayed on the Venice Lido and that was lovely and has a beach and you take boat in - I would happily spend a week in Venice but not the cheapest place to stay. Stayed at Villa Edera. There are other Lidos so ensure get the Venice one.

Bulgaria is a lovely place to visit although I've only been to cities, not the coast. Everyone was very friendly and it was quite cheap. I think you have to research coastal resorts carefully as a few friends have ended up in places that seemed to be coming down with stag parties.

One of the Italian Lake resorts that's reasonably big so it won't matter if you don't have a car and you can use the ferries to get to different parts.

Tbilisi in Georgia. That would be beautiful in June. It's a small city that's easy to do on foot and you can get a cheap driver for the day for tours out of the city. It's a really lovely place.

Barcelona. Mixture of city and beach.

Bordeaux and the Arcachon Basin, although not sure how that would work without a car.

We holiday similarly.

I liked Lisbon/Cascais but it's not a fancy capital city but it's got loads to see and do and I really love Portuguese food.

Malaga is a great holiday without a car. Loads of museums (30?), city centre beaches and more restaurants than you can shake a stick at. A big natural park for hiking is a short bus trip (20 mins) from the city centre. You can day to up to Cordoba, the caves at nerja and Ronda.

Mallorca is great without a car. Palma is a nice city to spend some time in. There's a train from central Palma across the mountains to soller (I'd stay in the village, not the port) where there are lovely beaches and great walks around the coast.

Asturias in Northern Spain is a beautiful region, lots of lovely villages and fantastic beaches. You could fly to Asturias with Vueling or Santander with Ryanair.

There is also the Picos Mountain range, with a cathedral half way up and a lake at the top. I have family in this area and have been visiting several times a year for 10 years. I’ve visited lots of villages and towns and places of interest and there are still lots of places I’d like to see.

The bus system Alsa is really good and reasonably priced but hiring a car would enable you to see more places.

This is a brilliant list of suggestions, thanks everyone! It's making it even harder to decide, I tell you Grin

It's interesting how people's perceptions of places are different. Malta I'm a bit hesitant about for that reason, as some people have said it's a bit boring. Sicily looks brilliant and not as pricey as Amalfi or Cinque Terre - I'm drooling at the thought of all that arancini and croissants stuffed with icecream (!!). Albania is definitely on my list but DH isn't keen, and Turkey I'm planning on doing later in the year so will skip it for now. I've only been to Chania in Crete and loved the history and food, so wouldn't mind going back there either and maybe popping over to Santorini. Cascais sounds lovely too, seems a popular one on here!

I think it's going to come down to price and availability of flights and accommodation since you can't really go wrong with a lot of these. I'm giving myself until the end of the weekend to decide, eeeep!

Marrakech, Morocco.

Burpsandfustles · 26/01/2019 13:58

Stay in riads and book massages etc at les bain de marrakech. Devine!

Update: Sicily is booked! Super excited Grin thinking Taormina and Ortigia.

We stayed at The Grand Hotel in Ortigia which was lovely. We did a trip to Etna and stopped off in Taormina which was also fabulous.

Enjoy your trip.

anniehm · 27/01/2019 13:57

Sicily is lovely, there's public transport, loads to see, climb etna (or use cable car!) great food, great wine, quite cheap, not many Brits (I recommend brushing up on your Italian meal names and basic phrases, google translate is your friend). Fly into cantania rather than Palermo as its not as isolated.

PenguinPandas · 27/01/2019 14:26

You'll have a lovely time, stuffed swordfish kebabs are amazing. Loved Taormina, only place didn't like was Palermo but think we stayed on wrong side of town, police cars all night. Ice cream is great too.
