Yorkshire Hard Water Tea Bags and De-caff

I have given up trying to find a de-caff tea that doesn't taste like chemical waste so went back to Yorkshire tea bags, the gold ones.

However as our water is so hard it comes out of the tap in chunks I bought the hard water ones, and they are foul, they taste like strong de-caff.

What do they do to them to make them so disgusting?

Is there anything as good as the Yorkshire gold ones? I used to buy Barrys but went off them and none of the others seem as good.

The trouble is you need beautiful Yorkshire water to brew.

cannycat20 · 24/01/2019 16:56

Yep. This. Scottish water, Devon water, Northern Irish water, Welsh water and Northumbrian water will all do nicely as well. Midlands water, Somerset water - even boiling the water and then filtering it again still doesn't help.

SpringForEver · 24/01/2019 19:30

Sadly I am not able to move to a soft water area to get decent tea.

The Yorkshire Gold bags are OK but the others are dire. I might be wrong but everyone I have known from 'The North' drinks tea that is like gnat's piss so it wouldn't have any flavour anyway. As my friend said, 'I fill a cup with hot water and show it the teabag' - she made the worst tea ever.

If you actually drink tea with flavour I apologise for the above.

For those in 'The South' I am looking for alternative decent tea bags that are not Tetley, PG etc. which are not nice.

Do you use a filter, Brita-type thing? It’s the only thing I can do to improve the taste, as an exiled Northerner living in the South. I use Yorkshire Tea.

PartyOnGarth · 24/01/2019 20:25

Can you get ringtons decaf tea where you live? It's the only decaf I can drink and I like a strong brew. Can't help with the water issue but as previous poster has suggested maybe try a Brita filter for your water??

VanillaSauce · 24/01/2019 20:28

Get a filter

Fazackerley · 24/01/2019 20:28

Do they not make gold anymore Shock they were nice.

I live in a hard water area and I don't think you can beat twinings English breakfast

Autu · 24/01/2019 20:31

Would you consider switching to looseleaf tea? That’s what I did and never looked back, We have very hard water here but can make a super caf and decaf with good looseleaf.
Trumper’s English Breakfast for normal and Canton decaf English breakfast for good decaf.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 24/01/2019 20:36

We live in a very very hard water area and I gave in and bought a Brita filter. So far so good on the tea front.

I like Twinings strong one or the Clipper tea bags. Whichever’s on offer.

Would you like me to send you some of our perfect soft water. It's so soft that I use ordinary dishwasher tablets with no salt and I have never descaled anything in my life.

But seriously, is there a mineral/spring water you can use, not that I recommend buying evil ocean clogging plastic bottles, you understand.

Deepest south and hard hard water here. Also strong tea addict. I am a convert to Barry’s Tea - get it from Amazon. I use water from a Brita filter jug and it definitely makes a big difference to both the taste and in the absence of oil slick scum floating on top of tea 😳

HappenstanceMarmite · 24/01/2019 20:44

Regarding decaf - I had a cupboard full of rejected decaf Teabags. Vile. And then I discovered Yorkshire Tea Bedtime Brew. Slight lemony taste and spicy. I never thought I’d like it but I drink it from 1pm onwards now. I’ve got lots of friends and family onto it too.

FevertreeLight · 24/01/2019 20:47

As they say

Yorkshire tea for Yorkshire water.

allornuffin · 24/01/2019 20:52

Before we bought a big Berkey filter, I swore by Brita filters for making better tea (using Yorkshire teabags but use Clipper organic now).

Schmoobarb · 24/01/2019 20:55

I quite like the Yorkshire decaf tea Confused maybe I have crap taste in tea. Twinings decaf earl grey is my favourite though. We have soft water though

bellinisurge · 24/01/2019 20:59

Yorkshire decaf is bloody gorgeous (I live in Greater Manchester)

lljkk · 24/01/2019 21:34

I rate Lidl decaf tea bags. There was a whole thread on MN about which decaf tea to use with hard water.

HappenstanceMarmite · 24/01/2019 21:37

Ugh not the actual decaf Yorkshire. It’s the BEDTIME brew which I love (but it is also decaf). Nutmeg and vanilla involved. Very subtle

Djchickpea · 24/01/2019 21:37

I also live in a super hard water area. I recently discovered Bewley's tea when I was in Dublin. Lovely strong tea that still tastes good with my crappy water

HappenstanceMarmite · 24/01/2019 21:40

This is the badger. I see it has new packaging.

Very hard water here and I like Twinings English Breakfast

IloveJudgeJudy · 24/01/2019 22:07

Hard water here - Clipper tea. The one in the unbleached bags. Atm I'm using Yorkshire decaf teabags.

willowstar · 24/01/2019 22:51

Hard water area here. I find waitrose own brand decaf OK if you wrong the flavour out if it.

willowstar · 24/01/2019 22:52

Wring the flavour even...

ShannonRockallMalin · 24/01/2019 22:56

I’m in a very hard water area and I like the Tesco finest fair trade teabags. Nice and strong. I also thought the Yorkshire hard water ones tasted weird.
