Hair washing revelation

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 23/01/2019 09:38

Last night I shampooed my hair in the shower as usual but then the water started to go cold so I didn't manage to use conditioner. I assumed I would rewash and condition this morning.

However, my hair feels lovely! Really soft and silky and sort of.. bouncy. Have I been religiously conditioning all this time totally needlessly?

Does anyone else not use conditioner?

Cold water closes the follicles which makes the hair appear smoother.

I cant get a comb through mine without conditioner, but I do it back to front now so conditioner first, leave in for a few minutes and then shampoo last. You need a fraction of the shampoo you would use normally and it really gives it body.

I only use conditioner every couple of weeks. It makes my hair greasy feeling if I use it each day.

The water wasn't very cold, it just started to cool down so I wouldn't have time to condition without it getting freezing.

I'm definitely going to try to use less conditioner as it feels so nice and will save money and water. Maybe menopause is having one good side effectSmile. I'll try conditioning first as well.

I use shampoo bars and don't need conditioner. Always needed it when I used shampoo!

chemenger · 23/01/2019 17:53

I also ditched conditioner when I swapped to shampoo bars. no problems combing my shoulder length hair. My hair is much shinier, I think because its really squeaky clean.

Fireballfriends · 23/01/2019 17:56

I use two in one shampoo and conditioner - my hair is very fine tho.

Lucked · 23/01/2019 17:58

I have also been cutting back on conditioner, even though I tried to only apply it too the ends my roots have more volume when I don’t use it. It is a bit fizzier but dries really fast so I pop the straighteners on.

The type of shampoo can make a difference, if too strong I wouldn’t be able to brush it without damaging it.

LellowYorry · 23/01/2019 17:59

chemenger were do you source them?

chemenger · 23/01/2019 18:02

I use Lush bars , they are expensive but they last for ages. I don't remember the exact name but they are pink.

Undercoverbanana · 23/01/2019 18:03

Hair conditioner is one of those things we’ve been sold.

Like fabric conditioner too.

Totally unnecessary and environmentally bad.

Just two of the things I gave up years ago.

You want to give up ironing too.

It’s liberating.

Theconifers25 · 23/01/2019 18:04

I do something which I read on Mumsnet, I shampoo my roots and whilst then shampoo is in the roots I condition the ends.
Nice bouncy roots and saves a bit of time.

anniehm · 23/01/2019 18:06

Rarely use conditioner, only when I'm on holiday really as salt water/heat combo dries it out. It's greasy naturally so I don't add extra products

IamFrauBlucher · 23/01/2019 18:15

Unused to buy big bottles of cheaper conditioner and completely overuse the quantities.

Now I shampoo the roots only. And just rinse the foam through the ends.

I have a salon conditioner and I use a 10p sized blob through the mid to end section of the hair, leave it while I finish washing and then wet my hair and massage it through the whole head and rinse.

My conditioner lasts approx 6-8 months now. So it's an upfront expense but good value in the long run.

I also can't get a comb through my hair without conditioner.

I also used to wash my hair every day but these days it's 2-3 times a week usually. I find leaving it as long as possible between washes really makes my hair silkier when I do wash it.

IamFrauBlucher · 23/01/2019 18:15

I used to, not unused.

BlueJava · 23/01/2019 18:19

I've really reduced the amount of shampoo and conditioner I use - just a small dob and rub it in with some water rather than a handful of the stuff. It's made no difference to my hair, but it is much cheaper and I don't feel like I am just washing it down the plug hole. Now if I can get the teens to do the same....Smile

FuckBrussel · 23/01/2019 18:21

I use shampoo bars too - my hair is in really good condition, even my hairdresser commented on it! I buy online from here:-

EngagedAgain · 23/01/2019 18:25

I only use conditioner when just coloured hair, then a little for next wash or two then none. Like previous pp I've not used fabric conditioner for years. Can I ask where can I get shampoo bars? Are there shops that sell them or only online.

Undercoverbanana · 23/01/2019 18:28

Lots of shampoo bars online. Google is your friend. So much healthier feeling hair than with plastic bottles of gunk.

Deodorant bars are excellent too if you are trying to get away from plastic consumption.

EngagedAgain · 23/01/2019 18:28

Thanks in advance as I'm out until late.

Undercoverbanana · 23/01/2019 18:29

Lush sell them but they are pricey.

I got my last stash at a Vegan Fair where there was a stall.

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 23/01/2019 18:35

I get shampoo bars from wild-sage.co.uk/product/handmade-natural-vegan-soap/shampoo-bar-rosemary-lavender.

No palm oil, my hair's happy & a £6 bar lasts me ages.

Synecdoche · 23/01/2019 18:45

undercoverbanana what deodorant bar do you recommend?

girlandboy · 23/01/2019 18:53

I get my shampoo bars from The Friendly Soap Company for £2.62 per bar. And NO palm oil.

I only use conditioner if I want my hair to be lank, heavy and greasy the next day ConfusedGrin
