I bloody love porridge. I eat it almost everyday!
What are your favourite porridge toppings?
I'm after some new ideas.

CottonSock · 23/01/2019 13:42

Dried apricots and syrup is my favourite.

Angie169 · 23/01/2019 15:41

Frozen mixed summer berries ( or greasy in the summer ) sometimes honey.
Make with full fat milk the night before.
I live Greek yoghurt and will have that for my breakfast if i don't fancy porridge however i've never thought of combining the two, guess what i'm having for my breakfast tomorrow morningSmile
I know somebody that loves instant oats like ready Brek with instant coffee scattered on top. Bleurgh!

Grumpbum123 · 23/01/2019 15:48

Best I’ve had was in a B&B raspberries, Demerara sugar and double cream. Lovely but not for every day 🤣

I've been making up mixes of jumbo porridge oats bought in bulk. Lots of seeds like pumpkin, chia and flax, dried berries (raisin, goji and dates), then I lighten the mix with flakes of other cereals. I agree with PP to soak first.

ShivD · 23/01/2019 16:00

My recent discovery is fresh pineapple in porridge, it is SO good.

simplepimple · 23/01/2019 16:04

@Penninepain

Put the berries in frozen - no need to defrost first. I also freeze the other half of the banana if I don't use a whole one and that goes in frozen the next day too.

Banana, raspberries, coconut oil, a sprinkle of ginger powder into porridge made with water cooked in microwave and then topped with mascarpone.

concretesieve · 23/01/2019 16:20

Porridge is 'topping with milk and sugar or GS [golden syrup]' Quote from Gerry Goes to School by Elinor M Brent-Dyer. I agree Smile

Strokethefurrywall · 23/01/2019 16:22

I'm currently addicted to a tablespoon of each of the following in my post-workout porridge (or evening dinner if I can't be arsed to cook):

  • Chocolate Chips (semi-sweet ones)
  • Almond Butter (sometimes 2 tbsps...)
  • Flax seeds
  • Chia
  • Pumpkin seeds

I think I might start throwing a banana in there and see how good it is. I suspect it will taste fucking awesome.

I love porridge. Seriously love it.

BikeRunSki · 23/01/2019 16:36

My dad (Scottish) has salt, and cream on Sundays.

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 23/01/2019 16:42

Recently I have been putting a bit of cacao powder in to make chocolate porridge, which is yum! Topped with either bananas and walnuts, or chopped pear.
I'm also using up some random coffee syrups that were a gift. I don't really like flavoured syrup in coffee but a drizzle on porridge is really good!

I always mix a couple of teaspoons of linseeds into the oats before cooking too, for the health benefit and I also really like the texture.

OneStepMoreFun · 23/01/2019 16:43

My favourites are:
frozen mixed berries with a drop of vanilla essence and cinnamon
banana with vanilla
frozen black cherries with a drop of almond essence
cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and honey
not had plain old cream and soft brown sugar for ages but you can't beat it
honey and greek yoghurt
banana and raspberry
maple syrup and chopped pecans or walnuts
chunky sultanas and spices
grated fresh apple with cinnamon

blibblibs · 23/01/2019 16:53

I've just started doing overnight oats and there are some great ideas here.
Had it with almond milk and chopped banana this morning but it was missing something so going to add dates to that one I think.

QueenMabby · 23/01/2019 16:54

Peanut butter with either banana or blueberries.
Almond butter with sliced pear or with a teaspoon of raspberry jam and a handful of fresh raspberries (tastes like Bakewell tart).
Chocolate porridge (tsp is cocoa while it’s cooking) with pear is also good.
Some great suggestions by others I can’t wait to try too!

At the Loch Fyne hotel, the breakfast bar had a big urn of porridge - and the toppings they offered were:

  • double cream
  • golden syrup
  • and Bell’s whisky!!

I did have porridge with cream and golden syrup, but felt that 9am was a tad early for whisky.

ISpeakJive · 23/01/2019 18:50

Ooooh I love a bowl of porridge. My usual toppings are:

Bananas
Cinnamon
Blueberries
Strawberries
(if I have some, pomegranate)
Chia seeds
Dessicated coconut

Bloody marvellous!

VanillaSauce · 23/01/2019 19:01

I usually make up a mix and heat up at work but I was a little bit short on milk so it kinda went a bit dry and a tad too rock hard so I thinned it out with my morning latte. Worked perfectly. Grin

onlyhereforthefood · 23/01/2019 19:08

Mincemeat (especially in baked oats)

Peanut butter and banana

Cinnamon and raisins

Apple/plum and cinnamon

onlyhereforthefood · 23/01/2019 19:09

Oh, and chunks of melted chocolate!

FairfaxAikman · 23/01/2019 19:14

You're all Philistines!

The only way is water and a little salt.

elerismum · 23/01/2019 20:24

Cornflakes Smile

Jellyonawonkyplate · 23/01/2019 21:06

Crunchy peanut butter, blueberries, chopped hazelnuts, honey

WitsEnding · 23/01/2019 21:08

Nutmeg or lemon zest. A spoonful of Lidl Greek yoghurt if I have some.

rytonsister · 23/01/2019 21:47

Ooo place marking ....

In part I've enjoyed a few mixed berries (frozen left in fridge overnight to defrost) and a dollop on creme friache with a drizzle of honey

Holidayshopping · 23/01/2019 21:55

I really want to like porridge-I think it would be warming, filling and good for the digestion as well as being cheap but I just don’t ever fancy anything sweet for breakfast! I’ve tried to like it with sugar or syrup :(

What could I put with it that is savoury, or is porridge itself actually sweet?

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 23/01/2019 22:18

Holiday try making it with water and salt...it shouldn't taste sweet that way. Could then add bacon and grated cheese.

I like it with cashew nuts and dried figs though.
