Weight/metabolism- am I really abnormal?

Hi
I'm wondering if anyone else shares a similar body shape/metabolism to me.

As a child I was very very thin, very underweight. So much so that I was carted off to gp and given all sorts of potions but I was just honestly never hungry. I was made to stay school dinners in an effort to get me to eat but I just never had any appetite and eating when I was t hungry made me gag. I remember once being forced to eat a trifle at school and it coming straight back up Blush

wowfudge - you are correct. binpedal you aren not - go to the diabetes uk website to read up on this diet reversing type 2 diabetes.

and - i dont think there is any need to be so rude - have your opinion fine. but i know that
a) i have diabetes
b) i work shifts including nights
c) my job is incredibly stressful
d) i eat very healthily
d) i exercise
e) have a much higher body fat % than i should for my age and it now shows in my health and my mirror. i dont really give a toss what you think of my weight tbh.

isdads - i went to gp as after a pregnancy loss at 14 weeks in 2016 (when i was 44 ) my periods changed and became very very heavy. i also get a lot of pelvic pain. they ran tests based on that and the blood results showed very low iron and folate levels but high glucose levels. i had no cancer markers in the bloods, a scan revealed ovarian cysts . a repeat blood showed same. im having the hba1c test tomorrow which will give an overview of my blood sugar for the last couple of months.

if i can reverse the affects of diabetes by giving a diet a shot for 8 weeks then i think i need to try it. the benefits would also be hopefully getting rid of some of this body fat.

Binpedal · 23/01/2019 11:49

Have you had your body fat accurately measured?

Binpedal · 23/01/2019 11:55

And it's not that I don't believe that you have these health issues or that you don't feel happy with your weight. I do.
I just don't think a miserably low calorie diet is sustainable particularly when you aren't technically overweight. If you eat healthy and exercise I'm sorry but at your weight if you have diabetes and an unusually high body fat then something else must be going on.
Have you discussed this with your GP?

@Binpedal you know nothing if you're so rudely dismissing the BSD!

It's not so much about the OP losing weight but it's about helping her with her diabetes, and this WOE has been shown to do that very positively.

rytonsister · 23/01/2019 12:06

im on amazon now filling my basket! thanks to those who mentioned it.
yes i will find it hard i know i will but i have just taken a couple of photos which i was going to post and i cant even bring myself to do that - i do look bad. horrible. just fat. no other word to describe me at the moment!
i get by cos i scrub up well and breathe in - a lot!

8 weeks is worth it to be healthy and lower my blood sugar. the gp told me that to begin with they would want me to control it by diet anyway so i may as well try this, and it is proven with a very similar study on the diabetes uk site. its not a fad diet binpedal its for diabetes!

Would you consider getting your doctor or diabetic nurse to refer to you a dietician?

pennycarbonara · 23/01/2019 14:57

Why not leave substantially new eating plans until after you've finished the night shifts? There's probably a better chance of them working once you are adjusted to sleeping at more normal hours. And for the moment just cut down on the McDonalds when you can manage without it.

User10fuckingmillion · 23/01/2019 14:58

It’s insane that you are a t2 diabetic eating that diet. Have you always eaten like that?

User10fuckingmillion · 23/01/2019 14:59

Oops I missed about 3 pages there sorry if you’ve already answered that

pennycarbonara · 23/01/2019 15:00

Sorry, didn't mean to discourage people on night shifts generally from anti-diabetes eating plans. But you've a life change coming up in a month or two anyway that could make it easier and give you a psychological boost with it.

LimitIsUp · 23/01/2019 15:25

Just ignore Binpedal, the eight week blood sugar diet is not a "bloody miserable" fad diet. Its very well researched, and as I am actually following it I confirm that its not bloody miserable, although it involves a bit more work in planning and food prep.

I've been doing it for 3 weeks (I have prediabetic elevated blood sugar) and feel so much better for not eating so many carbs, especially processed carbs. I am no longer nodding off in the afternoon, my energy levels are better and what I thought was IBS seems to have resolved (it seems wheat doesn't agree with me!). Oh, and I have lost 15 lbs in three weeks.

I am following the recipe suggestions and some of them are really quite tasty. I've been hungry - but not ravenous, and frankly you should expect a bit of hunger on a diet (that's your body trying to prompt you to eat because its pissed off with no ready supplies of glycogen and having to burn your fat stores instead)

Alwayscheerful · 23/01/2019 15:37

@Binpedal your description of BSD is nonsense. BSD means Low sugar, low carb, eating healthy protein, fats and vegetables to keep you feeling full. BSD is a particularly suitable diet for someone who has become insulin resistant. OP keep your carbs under 50 a day and preferably under 25 a day and the weight will fall off.

rytonsister · 23/01/2019 15:40

thanks for that limit my willpower is a bit rubbish but im really going to give this a go. just waiting for the amazon delivery - got a recipe book and the book that explains it.

focalpoint i would have happily gone to a dietician but my gp dismissed me as soon as she saw me saying it couldnt be my weight.

dp just gave me his i told you so lecture too. he told me i was carrying too much fat round my middle a while ago but i got defensive - well who really wants to be told theyre a porker really? Grin
but i am.

I really hate cooking/meal planning, so not sure BSD will be for me. Maybe if I just eat salads and very little carbs, I'll shift some of this excess.

LimitIsUp · 23/01/2019 16:49

Hmm - might not be for you then Horsemad, although you could bulk make soup (yes cooking involved, but could make 4-8 portions with just one cooking session) and have easy lunches for a few days on the trot (horsey pun not intended)

Focalpoint · 23/01/2019 16:59

Hi. I was suggesting dietician to help you manage diabetes in a way that is good for your long term health.

Alwayscheerful · 23/01/2019 17:05

I can't recommend this facebook group enough, follow the tips to help get your blood sugar back on track.

rytonsister · 23/01/2019 17:37

Thanks for all the info guys really helpful 🙂

I don't mind planning and cooking and do that anyway. I make everything from scratch.

And wondering what to have for lunch is always a pain and whether to brave the local supermarket in uniform....you either get funny looks or a shoplifter

I'm quite looking forward to giving it a go.

www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2016/apr/23/diabetes-can-you-really-eat-to-beat-it

Reading this....

So those doing this at min....what are the shakes/supplements he is referring to? Says you can choose very low calorie food or a shake....are these home made? Thanks again

OP posts:
BIWI · 23/01/2019 18:10

I don't know about those shakes, but if you look at Moseley's latest site, Fast800, they have some shakes that they're selling/about to sell (it's very new).

They could help - link here

Focalpoint · 23/01/2019 18:12

I know a lot more about type 1 than type 2 diabetes but that 800 cal diet on the article has hardly any carbohydrate at all and blood glucose only rises if you eat carbs so kind of obvious if you ate it your blood sugar would reduce.

Also my understanding what that T2 was due to insulin resistance and your beta cells wearing out from producing too much insulin not fat cells in the pancreas slowing insulin production.

If I was diagnosed with a serious condition like type 2 diabetes I would seek advice from diabetes professionals like specialist nurse or dietician as opposed to just putting myself on an 800 cal diet.

icantthinkofanotherone · 23/01/2019 18:15

10 st 4lb less 22lb doesn't make 8st 5lb. It is 8st 10lb.

I get where you are coming from with the small frame, a family member is the same.

It must be difficult with working shifts, but usually they say don't eat your dinner after 7pm if you are going to bed at a normal time. You would probably be better eating little and often rather than the big gaps you have at present.

rytonsister · 23/01/2019 18:23

Ican
When those stats were done around 6 months ago I weighed less than now.

Thanks biwi I'm going to preorder one and try it . Vanilla was the guardian guinea pigs fave. I'll go with that. Real food first for me tho I think tho this would be hugely helpful on night shifts when my tummy complains if if I eat .
