How did you celebrate your 50th?

Just looking for ideas for my birthday later this year. I'm not a big party person, but I do feel I want to mark the occasion. At the moment I'm thinking of a night in a local pub with around 50 people. I'm pretty laid back and casual. Birthday is in October so hard to have an outdoors element. DH and the kids and I will do something special too.

Just wondered what others have done, if anything.

TIA

I'm 50 in October too! But I'm not planning on doing anything. Well not party wise anyway. My DS is about to move to Japan for a new job and he is 30 this year so I'm thinking to go there and celebrate our milestones together. I've had a few friends hit 50 already and none of them did anything as such. The pub thing sounds fine and I'm sure it'll be fun.I'm funny about birthdays though. Half of me is glad to have reached whatever age it is, and half of me is horrified that I'm that old!

Pupsiecola · 22/01/2019 19:08

I feel the same Asta. Trying to focus on gratitude for still being here. I went to a casual at-home 50th on Saturday night and it was actually lovely. And it's spurred me on to get sth organised.

When in October is your birthday? Mine's the 10th.

My boys are 16 (on Thursday!) and nearly 14. I can't imagine them leaving home. But it will of course come. Just as it should.

My DD turned 21 the same year that I turned 50 2 years ago.

Dh paid for us both to go to New York for a week. He's never had any interest in it and DD and I have always wanted to go.

It was amazing. We both fell in love with NY.

Then he threw me a surprise party with my best friends from another town on my actual birthday.

Mine's on the 1st. Yes I am going to miss him terribly but I am so happy for him too. It's been his dream to move there so that's what I keep reminding myself of. As a mum you want your childs dreams to come true! As corny as it sounds, as long as you are surrounded by loved ones it will be a lovely birthday. I sadly know a few people who have passed away in their 50's and 60's so I do appreciate the fact I'm here and relatively healthy.

Pupsiecola · 22/01/2019 19:25

I wish you many happy visits with your son in Japan Asta. Life is so bitter sweet isn't it.

Afternoon tea surprise with just family

I’m not much of a party person

ggirl · 22/01/2019 19:35

My husband planned a surprise party and then the a few days before my friend phoned and asked if I wanted a hand cleaning up for the party Hmm

mimibunz · 22/01/2019 19:39

We did a trip to New England about 6 months before my 50th, which is in January. On the day we went to London for dinner and the theatre, stayed overnight. I loved doing different things throughout the year!

Lucisky · 22/01/2019 19:44

Had a weekend in London with oh. Went to a show, spent nearly a whole day at a museum I wanted to see. Went on the London Eye and was joined by the whole family for a lovely meal as well. It was brilliant. However, for my 60th we went abroad, which was so relaxing, I now endeavour to always be on holiday on my birthday, I've had enough of them and can no longer be bothered with organising parties and get togethers etc.

StoatofDisarray · 22/01/2019 19:54

I feel you, OP: I'm not a party person either. When I was 50, I spent the whole month doing different things with different groups of people, so I got several amazing days that everyone present enjoyed.

GrumpyOldMare · 22/01/2019 19:56

I went to work, got given a huge bunch of flowers which embarrassed me hugely. Came home, showered, had tea, watched tv and went to bed. Perfect birthday.

Jsmith99 · 22/01/2019 19:59

Big holiday to South Africa, just the two of us. Cape Town, winelands, Garden Route, whale watching, then over to the Kruger Park for the wildlife.

Beats a week in Skeggy Grin.

cstaff · 22/01/2019 20:14

I had a meal out with my extended family. Nieces, nephews. Bros, sis, inlaws, mam and dad. I would have hated the idea of a party - very low key but great night.

Pupsiecola · 22/01/2019 20:15

I had a month long 40th, doing things with different groups of people. We can't go away for actual birthday because kids are still school age and we have no-one to stay with them. I reckon I can eek it out a bit though - some different things with different friends. If DH can wing a NY work trip I might try to go for a couple of night if we can get grandma to stay with the kids.

I'm also planning a running event per month as well. Some lovely 50s here. Thank you for posting.

Went on a yoga retreat in India with DBoyfriend. Yoga and meditation twice a day, fab vegetarian food, lolled about in hammocks on the porch of our little hut. Was great!

Fireinthegrate · 22/01/2019 20:46

Husband and daughters organised a small party in the local pub with family and friends. This was about 5 days before my actual birthday. Then at the party he presented me with tickets for a trip to Venice. We stayed 4 nights in a luxury hotel. It was fab-u-lous!

Rafflesway · 22/01/2019 20:56

To be honest I can't even remember mine but we probably just had a nice meal at home with lots of good wine Grin

In fairness though I am not one for making a big thing of birthdays.

BG2015 · 22/01/2019 20:59

I'm 50 in 2 weeks. I'm doing a few things.

I'm taking 8 female relatives/close friends for afternoon tea, I'm going out with my DP and my 2 DS for a meal. I'm also going out with work (2 other colleagues were 50 in December) so we 're having a joint meal.

My DP has also paid for us to go to London for 2 days and we're seeing Muse and Emilia (saw it last year at the Globe and SO excited to see it again).

Lots of exciting things makes 50 just about bearable.

TheWoollybacksWife · 22/01/2019 21:00

I turned 50 last year. I moved house a couple of days before my actual birthday so didn't do much apart from a meal out with my DH and our children on the day. A few weeks later DH and I went on a Norwegian cruise and I had a spa weekend just before Christmas with my SILs that was my birthday present from them.

I reckon I actually managed to spin it out for a good six months 😂

Petalflowers · 22/01/2019 21:02

I’m planning to go to a concert with my sister on the actual date.

He had considered spending a few days abroad but then this concert turned up.

For the 40th, we went to a London show.

Have no desire to have a party.

ForalltheSaints · 22/01/2019 21:04

I was in a spa in the Netherlands. For my 40th, visited the Prado in Madrid.

Quickerthanavicar · 22/01/2019 21:04

I was treated to a private room for afternoon tea at Fortnum and Mason. I didn't want a party, had been very ill earlier in the year and it was perfect.

4catsaremylife · 22/01/2019 21:07

I spent an evening with my friends when I was 50. Hadn't wanted to go out so it was lovely to just relax chat, drink wine and eat nibbles. 60 approaching at light speed now and will probably be spent the same way

Auntpetunia2015 · 22/01/2019 21:15

Mine was last year. I got taken away for a “surprise “ holiday by my OH. I knew I was going just didn’t know where until we got to St Pancras and even then where the train was going wasn’t our final destination.

Pupsiecola · 22/01/2019 21:33

Where did you end up Aunt?
