Does anyone else not know what they weigh?

Got asked weight at a hospital appointment today. Can have a rough guess but don't know, as haven't owned scales for years. Woman looked at me as though I'd said something really weird.

I tend to go by my clothes, if they're getting a bit snug, I'll watch what I'm eating (and more importantly drinking Wine ) for a bit until they feel better.

Have memories of my Mum weighing herself almost daily it seemed with the corresponding mood swing according to what the scales said that day, so was never really interested in weighing myself.

ExH had scales and I popped on them occasionally out of idle curiosity, when he left with them never felt any need to get my own.

Am I unusual, should I be weighing myself regularly?

I have no idea. I go by how I look and if my clothes fit

peeblet · 22/01/2019 17:38

I check frequently as can put on almost a stone allover before my clothes would be obviously tighter, then it would be a nightmare to lose!

faintlyridiculous · 22/01/2019 17:39

You’re not unusual. I don’t know. I could give a rough estimate based on how big I am now compared to how big I was when I weighed myself but I see it as an entirely unnecessary data point for me.

When I did weigh myself I would see wild swings with no change of shape (up to half a stone could come and go in days) and knowing the number never made me feel good about myself. Ditching the scales was a very good thing.

I haven't owned scales since I left my parents home 13 years ago

I was weighed when I got pregnant though...

spaghettipeppers · 22/01/2019 17:45

I don't. I had some disordered eating in my teen years and scales make me anxious.

DeathMetalMum · 22/01/2019 17:45

I'm exactly the same. I usually weigh around 8 stone, but I rarely weigh myself. We don't actually own any scales. I'm the same if I find clothes getting a bit snug I watch what I'm eating/how much I'm moving and change it a bit.

I usually weigh myself at Sil's house actually.

Fairylea · 22/01/2019 17:48

I have no idea. I have no scales. I have a teenage dd and I don’t want her thinking weighing yourself is a healthy thing to do. She’s tall and very slim, I might feel differently I guess if she was very overweight but I’m more worried about her going the other way.

I know I am a bit fat. I’m a size 14-16 so I know realistically I could do with losing a few pounds but I like cake too much.

Wingbing · 22/01/2019 17:53

I don’t own scales or I would be weighing myself all the time.

I do however, hop on when I see some at someone else’s house.

captainpantbeard · 22/01/2019 17:53

Me! I'm a 12-14ish and go by clothes and belt. Scales are unnecessarily stressful because I'm quite short so I feel like I should weigh less when I don't.

I went for a hospital appointment and the nurse said "Weight?" then straightaway "Oh actually you look fine to me, no need". I was heartened by her attitude. (And I wouldn't have been able to answer anyway)

MitziK · 22/01/2019 17:54

Didn't have a clue until at the hospital a couple of weeks ago. It wasn't a surprise I'd put weight on because I'd been stuffing my face over Christmas and could feel it.

I won't know actual numbers again until they put me back on the things (and I'm already a bit vague on the numbers - I think it might have been 5kg heavier than when I was weighed in about 2008 - but it'll reduce again soon enough).

I don't care because I'm wayyy past the misery of monitoring every ounce and having it ruin my day before I even leave the house. I'd already decided that the winter stuffing was coming to an end and I've just gone back to eating things I like (veggies and lean meat, mostly). I think I've already lost a bit since then.

Ocies · 22/01/2019 17:56

The only time I stand on scales is when I go for my smear test and the nurse weighs me. I too tend to go by how my clothes feel.

Weezol · 22/01/2019 17:59

No. Frequently underweight owing to Crohn’s disease - I can tell I'm loosing by my clothes and feeling the cold. It's hard enough being ill, disabled and scraping by on benefits without having the scales punch me in the gut on top.

Throwing the scales into a skip was one of the best things I have ever done. The clang they made was like a liberation bell.

alltheusernames · 22/01/2019 18:00

Up until a year ago I didn't have a clue, but I knew I was putting on a bit too much, finally weighed myself and saw I was 2lb into the overweight category. First time in my life I have actively calorie counted and dropped 20lb. I look occasionally now just to ensure it's not creeping back on as I know how easy it is for it to creep on over the years, but if you know you're healthy and in your clothes I don't think it's healthy to obsess over weight.

YeOldeTrout · 22/01/2019 18:04

I don't have scales but I will use them if around. I don't seem to ever change so the last number I saw should usually be correct.

Can tell if recent gain or loss by which fingers I wear my rings on, too.

Ragwort · 22/01/2019 18:04

No I don’t know exactly, I have a rough idea (it’s too much and I am currently low carbing), when I've been on diets before I have got obsessive about how much I lose each week and if I don’t lose what I think I should lose then I tend to give up and go back to over eating. I can tell by my clothes whether I am losing weight and that is a much better guide.
My DM is the opposite and weighs herself every morning and is boringly tedious about telling me every gain and loss.

I have no idea.

I don't think I want to know.

Heavier than a few years ago.

Zofloramummy · 22/01/2019 18:11

I don’t own any scales so you are not alone!

PattiStanger · 22/01/2019 18:12

No scales here either, I go by clothes and general feeling of wellness, I have no idea how much my DC weigh at all and in general am totally unable to estimate the weight of others - is there such a thing as weight blindness?

Threewheeler1 · 22/01/2019 18:16

What Patti says! Grin^^^Grin
I haven't a clue. Am also happy that way Grin

MarcieBluebell · 22/01/2019 18:17

I have a rough idea but it's been over a year since I weighed myself. Also go by my clothes. Scales are useless imo. They are part of yoyo dieting for many.

Bumblebee39 · 22/01/2019 18:19

I know what I weigh

I did give up scales for a while but it became unbearable not knowing. Since I've had a set again I've been miserable though. I'm pregnant so not trying to lose weight right now but have been looking at what diet and exercise I'm going to do post partum already.

Wish I'd never bought the damn things

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 22/01/2019 18:21

no idea here either, no scales and if I get weighed I preface that with "do not tell me the numbers!" ...and I look at the ceiling!

sittingonthetallseat · 22/01/2019 18:22

Didn't replace my scales when they broke - used to weigh self regulalry.

But then I am depressed and not eating properly so I don't really need to..

milleniumhandandprawn · 22/01/2019 18:44

I'm in the (not particularly great) habit of weighing everyday so can tell you exactly.

It's not very healthy to do it but I get crabby if I don't check. Our scales broke on Saturday and I had to get some more on Sunday.

Sometimes I weigh myself in the evening too just to see how much I go down by in my sleep!
