Chicken pox - but only one spot?!

SandunesAndRainclouds · 22/01/2019 06:47

Bathing DD 6yo last night I noticed one definite chicken pox spot, on her neck. Another smaller one on her abdo that’s suspicious looking but not a blister, it’s either not a CP spot or she’s unknowingly scratched it.

I thought we’d wake up to find her covered this morning but no, still the same. Obviously I’m keeping her off school and at home to watch and wait but I was wondering if anyone else’s DC had had it this mildly? My other DCs are older and had it ‘properly’, so this seems unusual to me.

Typical bad timing too, I really could do without having to stay indoors over the next few days...

My daughter got 1 spot on a Saturday night and when I woke on Sunday it was gone ...And I thought great it wasn't chicken pox (we were on holidays) then she woke on Monday and was covered head to toe! She did have quite a mild case though.

5SleepingLions · 22/01/2019 07:06

My older son was absolutely covered in them from day one it was awful.
Ds2 had 3 spots on his stomach and wasn't unwell at all.

SandunesAndRainclouds · 22/01/2019 07:12

My other DCs were covered and the youngest of the 3 has some deep scarring. I don’t remember them being particularly unwell, but it was a few years ago now!

It really could’ve waited a week though Angry

My youngest had just one spot to begin with. 3 days later and they were covered from head to toe. I've never seen so many spots.

BiscuitDrama · 22/01/2019 07:16

Are you sure it’s not something else? I think it’s more common to get just one spot of molluscum contagiosum for example. I’ve spelt it wrong.

Enb76 · 22/01/2019 07:16

My daughter had one spot, and that was it. She had all the other symptoms, I knew she’d been exposed but one solitary spot. I have no idea if she’s actually had chicken pox or whether the illness and the spot were coincidence. I don’t suppose it really matters.

ChilliMum · 22/01/2019 07:19

I had it in my teens. Just a couple of spots on my abdomen. I never felt unwell at all. I always worried that I would get it again properly but I have since nursed 2 children through it and not been affected.

My mum has no recollection of ever having it even though she has come into contact with it many times (children and grand children). The doctor suggested that she probably had a very mild case at some point and just didn't notice so I think it's possible.

SandunesAndRainclouds · 22/01/2019 07:21

Here is the offending spot. I’m pretty sure it’s CP, it’s been at school so she’s very likely to have been exposed.

When I had it in my early 20s I had one spot all day the day before (thought it was a heat rash blister), one more spot the next morning at about 7am, and was absolutely covered by lunchtime. Maybe give it a few hours.

TheNoodlesIncident · 22/01/2019 07:32

My ds had chicken pox in infancy with only one spot. It was on his wrist and quite clearly a fluid filled blister (just like in OP's photo). I took him to the docs at my mum's insistence, and doc diagnosed chicken pox and a temperature of 41 degrees Shock She pointed out he was at strong risk of febrile convulsions, so I rushed him home (we walked there, in his pushchair) to give him cool baths.

He didn't develop any other blister like spots but did have a rash over his body. He also caught chicken pox again from his cousins about a year or two later, there were more blister-spots that time around...

Rememberallball · 22/01/2019 08:00

My best friend had it when her DD2 was just 6 weeks old. She (my friend) had about 6 spots, her 2 year old (B’fed at night only) had a typical toddler’s dose of spots butte poor 6 week old, when she went down with it, was covered from head to foot with spots merging and even inside her mouth.

My friend only found out she had it as she asked her GP about the few odd spots on her belly while having her post natal check done!!

BaronessBomburst · 22/01/2019 08:08

DS had it when he was 3, but only had 5 spots. (3 on his buttocks, 1 on the top of his arm, 1 on his stomach). He had been running a temperature before they appeared. I didn't even realise it was chicken pox until the nursery commented that he was the only child that hadn't gone down with it.
I was still breastfeeding at the time and had had it really badly as a child myself, so I put it down to my antibodies fighting it off.

Knowivedonewrong · 22/01/2019 09:18

My DD only had a few spots.
But her DB who was only about 7 months at the time, was absolutely covered. He had them in his eye lids too.
He recovered well.

SharkSave · 22/01/2019 09:35

Both of mine had 3 spots for 2 days, woke up on the third day and they were covered

SandunesAndRainclouds · 22/01/2019 10:00

Two more appearing now, one behind her ear and one on her ear.

Shopping list sent to DH for calamine, oats and cheap tights!

DS had about 5 spots. The week before he had been unusually grouchy but by time spots came he had no other symptoms. Unfortunately I believe that if it is very mild, there is a possibility of catching it again

MrsDeanWinchester75 · 22/01/2019 12:59

I had 2 separate doctors diagnose chicken pox when dd had 3 spots, I thought she'd got off lightly until a year later when she had real chicken pox and was covered head to toe with 12 hours of the first one appearing.

I'm not sure what the first spotty illness was but I've since noticed she often gets spotty a few days before she comes down with a bad cold.

MWNA · 22/01/2019 16:46

My daughter got chicken pox aged 3. She developed 9 spots in total

babysharkah · 22/01/2019 17:13

Dts has it twice. First time was three torso spots each. In the same place. 3yo.

I thought we had lucked out until they got it again at age7. It was horrendous. They were so ill. Off school for two weeks.

I wish I had got them vaccinated but somehow the possibility just passed me by,

My elder ds had 6 dots on his whole body, my younger ds was completely covered

Angelnanny555 · 22/01/2019 18:39

Spots not dots😊

SandunesAndRainclouds · 22/01/2019 18:41

Ow MWNA that looks so sore! DD’s are nothing like that.

She’s tired and grumpy, but that’s all so far. 4 spots in total... I wonder what tomorrow will bring!

I also have considered CP vaccination but it’s remained on the to do list.

Mine had it at 6. He had maybe half a dozen spots, only one of which itched, and wasn't even remotely unwell. It was definitely the pox, as half his class had it and a neighbour who's a nurse had a look at the first couple of spots and confirmed it.

He did, however, randomly have a very mild attack of shingles when he was about 9 or 10. Again, it didn't hurt and barely itched - he said it tingled a bit. GP confirmed what it was and it cleared in a week.
