Chicken pox - but only one spot?!

Bathing DD 6yo last night I noticed one definite chicken pox spot, on her neck. Another smaller one on her abdo that’s suspicious looking but not a blister, it’s either not a CP spot or she’s unknowingly scratched it.

I thought we’d wake up to find her covered this morning but no, still the same. Obviously I’m keeping her off school and at home to watch and wait but I was wondering if anyone else’s DC had had it this mildly? My other DCs are older and had it ‘properly’, so this seems unusual to me.

Typical bad timing too, I really could do without having to stay indoors over the next few days...

DD only had 5 spots when the GP diagnosed CP. I'm actually going to get her a blood test to check for CP antibodies as soon as I'm back in work and can afford it, because we'll get the vaccine if she doesn't have enough.

Well, that one spot turned into a covering. The first spots that came out are still there, and also the biggest / nastiest.

DD wasn’t feeling unwell until last night, the itching got worse and she felt unwell. No sleep here! Even more new spots this morning. It’s nevrr going to end is it....

It was the same with my youngest. There were so many spots it was like there was no visible skin underneath and some were huge - one on the eyelid, one on the side of the chest that kept rubbing against the arm, one on the neck that kept catching on the neckline of clothes. The only thing we could do for the itching was calamine aqueous cream and antihistamines - baths weren't tolerated at all! It lasted a week and days 3&4 were the worst. 3 years later there are some scars from the biggest spots but they're not really noticeable.

And, like your dd, it started with just one spot - it took another day or two for the rest to appear!

She’s still getting new ones this morning- first one came out Monday evening. One is developing on her bottom inner eyelid, that’s going to be sore 😔

DS got chicken pox when he was 18 months old, he was grumpy the day we found the first spot before we found it, threw up in the car & I couldn't settle him, when I got back to our caravan I found the one spot on the back of his neck, showed my MIL who said it was a heat spot, by bedtime we could see more spots popping up & by next morning he was covered in them. I gave him Calpol & piriton for the itching & used the Calamine cream from the chemists who recommended it instead of lotion, it was summer so I put bicarbonate of soda in his paddling pool & let him play in that whenever he wanted. It took around 3 weeks until the last scab dropped off.

A school friend of mine had chickenpox with very few spots at the same time as her sisters when she was in primary school. Unfortunately it wasn't enough to prevent her getting it again in her 40s ...

Is it possible to have chicken pox without spots? My child was around someone the day before they came out with spots, about 10 days later my child was so ill (like their sibling was with chicken pox) but had no spots.

For the itching put two tablespoons of porridge oats (not instant) and stir into a bath of blood heat water (no hotter). Let the child play in the bath and pour the water over chest and back. It is very soothing. Pat dry and repeat daily esp at bedtime.

My son had this when he was young - just a few spots. We wondered but a doctor confirmed. However, he caught it again a few years later which, as we know, isnt usual.

I’ve been doing oats in the bath, also have calamine cream (not lotion) and Poxclin. I think the next step will be Piriton tonight! I need sleep...

She’s definitely good a good dose of it, hopefully enough to build immunity so she doesn’t get it again.
