HELP ME! Restless legs!

eggonmyface · 21/01/2019 21:46

Every night. I'm getting no more than about 90min stretch of sleep at a time because of restless bloody legs!!! I fall asleep and it wakes me up. I'm then awake anywhere between half hour to two hours. Hour or so later if I'm lucky I'm awake again. It's making me miserable. Someone tell me how to make it stop please! I need to sleep tonight and I can tell it's starting already!

Magnesium is very helpful.

A spray is the quickest way as it absorbs straight into your skin. My mum and brother have RLS and swear by it.

SharpLily · 21/01/2019 21:49

Magnesium. One tablet before bed every night. Changed my life.

Hairymess · 21/01/2019 21:49

I've never had it but due to other issues, I've needed to take B12 and use a magnesium spray. I'm sure when looking into these that I read that they (could've been just one, but I think possibly both) can help with restless legs (i.e. that it's possibly a symptom of a b12 or magnesium deficiency?). Worth looking into.

Sexnotgender · 21/01/2019 21:50

Great mindsGrin

Hairymess · 21/01/2019 21:50

Ah. Cross posted. So magnesium, definitely. Possibly B12 unless I'm just mixed up!

I'm trying magnesium spray. Only night two but so far so good.

I think this is what my mum uses www.hollandandbarrett.com/shop/product/holland-and-barrett-magnesium-oil-spray-60047630

eggonmyface · 21/01/2019 22:02

I am 100% finding some of this spray! Do U just use it everytime it starts up or once before bed? I need it in my life right now. Currently just pacing the bedroom desperate to get in bed and sleep for once

Missed the tablet post. Can't tag. How long have you been taken a tablet a day please? How soon did it start working

Magnesium spray helps me- I spray it on my feet after my shower in the morning and it presumably gets absorbed during the day. Can sting a bit at first. And if you get it in a small cut ow ow ow!

ChrisjenAvasarala · 21/01/2019 22:05

I take magnesium but still didn't alleviate it much. I got some long resistance bands and do 30 minutes of leg sttechrs each night before bed, and it's made a huge difference.

SureIusedtobetaller · 21/01/2019 22:07

Just remembered- I saw a tip about putting Vicks on your legs after massaging them.
I tried Tiger Balm one desperate night and it seemed to help. I was a bit whiffy mind. One of my arms sometimes gets affected too...

Sexnotgender · 21/01/2019 22:10

I’m pretty sure my mum uses it nightly before bed so a prophylactic rather than once she gets symptoms.

teenangstpsychoanalyst · 21/01/2019 22:15

Some tonic water, the quinine helps. Works for me every time, a hateful thing!

Reading this with interest - I don't suffer in the middle of the night but by God, the evenings! We went to the cinema the other day (for the first time in ages) and I literally couldn't sit still. It was driving me crackers, and until then I hadn't realised how bad it has got.

TroysMammy · 21/01/2019 22:31

I take pramipexole. I don't have itchy and twitchy legs in the evening but I still kick about in my sleep at night.

Muddledupme · 21/01/2019 22:34

I take quinine tablets that I get on prescription and iron as being anaemic makes it worse. That seems to keep it in check.

Hedgehogblues · 21/01/2019 22:34

Get your iron levels checked as well

EgremontRusset · 21/01/2019 22:37

An osteopath helped mine

AiryFairy1 · 21/01/2019 22:40

I had this when I was pregnant and someone suggested a potato in the bed ... sounds so whacky but I feel it helped a bit! Just remember to remove it as they can go a bit manky after a while 😄

CatnissEverdene · 21/01/2019 22:45

DH has it. It's a miracle we are still married. Most nights I fantasize about chopping his bloody legs off with an axe frankly.

I'm trying to get him to ask our GP about Ropinirole which is a drug used to treat Parkinson's disease and has been successful with RLS.

It's a neurological disorder and we've found none of the oils/sprays/exercises do much to treat the root cause, only the symptoms. Caffeine and sugar does visibly make it worse though, so I'd always suggest watching those.

ThatsitIquit · 21/01/2019 22:52

Another one for Pramipexole (it’s another one of the medications that helps lower the shakes that Parkinsons brings with it) as well as tonic with Quinine.

Grandadwasthatyou · 21/01/2019 23:16

I don't think anybody realises how bad this is unless they actually suffer from it themselves. I ended up going to the GP because I just couldn't stand it any longer. From about 9pm I would have to start stretching my legs out on the settee, would get up and pace around and dreaded going to bed. Then once in bed I would thrash around, sticking my legs out of the covers as sometimes if my legs were freezing cold it would ease them.
I tried magnesium spray, magnesium tablets and even a bar of soap at the bottom of the bed ( as suggested by a pp on here). Nothing worked.
GP prescribed pramipexole which worked for a few months but am now on Ropinirole which does help. As soon as I start twitching now in the evening I know it is time for bed and to take the medication. The GP does check with me from time to time as side effects can be an uncontrollable urge to gamble and to have sex. I've got no interest in the former and my dp says he certainly hasn't noticed the latter!
