What time does your YR7, 11/12 year old go to bed on a school night?

My DD is YR7 and one of the youngest in the year at 11.

She goes to bed at 9 and reads until 9.15. Except she's still fannying about at 10 going to the toilet, saying she's not tired etc

I think this is far to late, so I'm thinking of bringing her bedtime forward to 8.30 but I know that won't go down well!

What time do your YR7's go please.

9.30 but tonight he appears to be “just finishing off this bit in Fortnite mum” 🙄
8.30 seems quite early, he has sport that doesn’t finish until 8.15 twice a week - it wouldn’t work for us.
Does she get up in the morning? DS is always up by 7.15, an hour before we leave.

Chipsahoy · 20/01/2019 22:04

Ten seems late for an 11yr old to still be awake. Mine is almost 11 and he's been asleep since just before nine.

He goes to bed between 8 and 9. He reads until he's falling asleep.

10.30pm

Year 8 DS who is 12 goes to bed at 8.30, light off. No screens an hour before then. Up at 7, and he needs the sleep

MrsBlondie · 20/01/2019 22:05

Mine is year 8 age 12 but is not tired in evenings. Its 9.30-10pm here and has been for a while.

EustaciaVye · 20/01/2019 22:07

Mine goes up around 9, reads for half an hour bit probably gets to sleep at 10

Titsywoo · 20/01/2019 22:10

9.30 is bedtime but I doubt he falls asleep until nearer 10.30. We don't get up until 7 so he's still getting 8.5 hours which he seems fine with.

SassitudeandSparkle · 20/01/2019 22:10

I can hear my 12 year old still moving around upstairs now - she's never been a great sleeper though, so no surprise really!

Puffinhead · 20/01/2019 22:11

9pm up to bed but god knows what time she sleeps. If I think she’s tired I do insist on an earlier night on a school night. I’m not remotely interested in what times her friends go to bed either!

YouCanCallMeJodieWho · 20/01/2019 22:13

Small screens were removed before 7pm in year 7. Was allowed to watch zen inducing tv until about 8. Lights out 8.30 at the start of the year, moving to 9pm.
Youngest child pissed about hugely often staying up after ten, but as we had to wake him up neatly every day he clearly needed the sleep,
Oldest child (of three) was asleep before 9 throughout year7!

Mudmonster · 20/01/2019 22:14

DD is 12 and goes up about 9-9:15pm and reads till 10pm. She gets up at 7:30am.
She sleeps in at the weekend till 8:30am.
She’s generally quite sensible and good at regulating herself though.

ThunderStorms · 20/01/2019 22:14

In bed at 8, light off at 9. Needs the hour to read, fuss around and switch off. Generally tired in the morning, so I wish I could get him to sleep earlier, but this seems to work as he can’t or won’t fall asleep earlier. His friends don’t seem to have a bedtime, so it does cause problems.

MrsPworkingmummy · 20/01/2019 22:16

I'm a form teacher to Y7 students and there's a clear correlation between those who are interested in school, attain high results and go to bed at a reasonable time, and those who stay up late, have computers in their rooms so are sneakily playing games until the early hours of the morning, are unfocused and uninterested in school and are generally really weak academically. I would say the majority of my students go to bed around 8.30-9 , but there are some who are up until 2 or 3 in the morning playing games, who then doze off in class when they get into school. It's really sad actually.

Iamnobirdandnonetensnaresme · 20/01/2019 22:20

No electronics from 7:30. In bed by 8 can read or draw etc in bed quietly until they are ready to sleep. General she turns the light off between 9 and 9:30.

I’ve told her she can tell people whatever time she wants if the subject comes up. Nobody needs to know the truth but she does need sleep and as her parent it is my job to make sure she gets it.

OhDearBeer · 20/01/2019 22:21

Bed 8.0, lights out 8.30

LucyInTheSkyy · 20/01/2019 22:22

9pm up to bed, but often gets up and potters around til 9.30- then reading until sleep. Sometimes 9.45, sometimes 10.30. So long as they are up and refreshed for the morning, I don't see an issue.

Iamnobirdandnonetensnaresme · 20/01/2019 22:24

It will also depend on what time they need to get up in the morning.

hazeyjane · 20/01/2019 22:24

11 and 12 year old dds go to bed at 8....read a bit. Go to sleep around 8.30/9ish

Luzina · 20/01/2019 22:26

In 1987 I went to boarding school (in Yr 7) and the go to bed bell was at 9.15, with lights out bell at 9.30. It felt too early. My 11 year old DS (in yr 6) goes to sleep between 9.30 and 10.

SassitudeandSparkle · 20/01/2019 22:27

Heck, no screens of any kind in bedroom! As I said, she's never slept much but screens would be far too much of a temptation for her. She does read for a bit, a book or magazine.

PhilomenaButterfly · 20/01/2019 22:28

9, 8 on Monday as she goes in earlier on Tuesday.

FreshEyre · 20/01/2019 22:28

DC is 11yrs. Goes for a shower at 8pm, comes back down for a quick drink and snack and then in bed for about 8:30pm. Reads until 9:00pm and then one of us will pop up to say goodnight and make sure that the lights are out (and the book goes back downstairs!).

Up at 7:00am and definitely needs the sleep.

Can be later at the weekend if we have something on but to be honest I try to stay with 9:00pm if I can.

slappinthebass · 20/01/2019 22:32

My 11 year old year 7 has not long turned her light off. I usually send her up between 8:30-9:30 and she can read until 10 ish. I wake her up at 7.

MegBusset · 20/01/2019 22:33

Y7 DS1 goes upstairs to get ready for bed and read in his room about 8-8.30. Lights off about 9.30. No screens allowed in bedroom ever. He gets up at 6.45 during the week and wakes naturally about 8am at the weekend.

Onglue · 20/01/2019 22:35

DD goes to bed at 8.45pm and can read until 10pm.
