Cancel the cheque

Point me to the 5? There is no 5. It's a 4. So no rounding up. It's 12.9
The five in me example was explaining how it 5 is the tipping point...
The correct answer was already given, but to clarify the principle of 5 being the tipping point to round up, it was necessary to show all the combinations.

ILoveChristmasLights · 20/01/2019 21:34

People ‘wanting to throw things’ and telling other people off for posting incorrect answers are part of the problem, not part of the solution.

We have a huge problem with maths being seen as ‘hard’ or it being ok to say ‘I don’t do maths’. People who get things wrong need kindness, patience and help. Not belittling and being told off.

I’m THANKFUL that I’m OK with it, I’m also thankful I don’t need to get my kicks by making those that aren’t feel small.

PurpleDaisies · 20/01/2019 21:34

I'm not sure they even call helium and the like Noble gases anymore.

They’re still noble gases but they’re now group 18. Angry

TeenTimesTwo · 20/01/2019 21:35

Stealth I get the impression that BODMAS and BIDMAS have both been around for a longish time.

O = Order isn't very intuitive
I = Index is equally rubbish

ChrisjenAvasarala · 20/01/2019 21:35

@TornFromTheInside

I wasn't directing my comment at you.

The person I tagged, dead, said that they'd say the answer was 13.0 because of the 5. But there is no 5, unless you do the crazy and wrong method of starting at the very end and rounding them all.

The number was 12.949. The only way to get a 5 is to round from the last 9 and then round again. And that's wrong. I didn't say anything about your post... just that other poster.

PurpleDaisies · 20/01/2019 21:36

People ‘wanting to throw things’ and telling other people off for posting incorrect answers are part of the problem, not part of the solution.

People should not post incorrect answers. If they’re not sure, they should say so. That’s absolutely fine. It’s the ones posting stuff that’s totally wrong with authority that annoy me.

dementedpixie · 20/01/2019 21:37

Is I not for Indice rather than Index?

dementedpixie · 20/01/2019 21:38

Indices*

No worries, I looked back at my post though and worried someone might misinterpret it as the actual answer, not the attempt to explain the process. I was forced to throw the five in as an example of the point it would tip the scales so to speak!

If someone read my post in isolation, they might misconstrue it!

TeenTimesTwo · 20/01/2019 21:40

ILove I think there is a difference between saying 'I see people are saying 12.9, but why isn't it 13? This is my understanding' (OK), and asserting confidently 13 (not OK).

It is like going onto a legal thread giving incorrect advice, or a spelling thread and giving the wrong spelling.

I wouldn't go onto a thread asking for a French translation and give an answer based O level French 35 years ago.

TornFromTheInside · 20/01/2019 21:44

for the 4/5 of 60 question, the best way I explain it to people who are daunted by numbers is the age old pie (not pi!) routine...

if a complete pie was worth 60, and I had 5 pieces, then each piece would be 12. (60/12). So now we know what each piece is worth.

So 4 pieces would we worth 4 * 12 which is 48.

For some people it is easier to visulise things this way, and work it out in stages. Even though it's simple maths, going back to basics can help.

ChrisjenAvasarala · 20/01/2019 21:45

I just can't believe that if I gave the number

17.636489397629010365243817354194

And said 'round to 1 decimal place' that anyone would think it's correct to start at the 4 at the end and round and round and round all the way up. You'd be there for days!!

Also, calculators are all different and only show a certain number of decimal places, so if you're using one calculator and it's set to show 5 decimal places and another calculor set to show 7 decimal places then and you're told to answer to 1 decimal place, and you start at the very end then theoretically you could end up with 2 different answers to the same question. Because you're rounding it wrong.

ILoveChristmasLights · 20/01/2019 21:45

🙄 Seriously? They post what they believe is correct. They don’t post incorrect answers to deliberately piss you off. It’s important to create an environment where people aren’t scared to post. If people are unaware they’re getting it wrong, threads like this help them and lurkers a lot IF they’re not scared to post. If only a couple of people post the correct answer no one learns anything.

If you don’t have the patience to allow people to get it wrong and to be helped, then best not open these threads.

Superiority really isn’t a pleasant trait.

Hmm12121 · 20/01/2019 21:46

12.9
How can anyone be getting that wrong!!

TornFromTheInside · 20/01/2019 21:46

I am not illiterate! My keyboard misses keys!

PickleFish · 20/01/2019 21:49

dementedpixie, indices is the plural of index, so both are fine as the explanation for what the 'I' stands for.

We used BEDMAS, where the E was exponents!

I've also seen BODMAS, but the O for pOwer, not Order, which is slightly dubious, but more understandable by the children

TheRhythmlessMan · 20/01/2019 21:50

What is BODMAS?

PurpleDaisies · 20/01/2019 21:51

I disagree here. When people are asking a factual question like the op’s one (whether it’s a medical one, legal one, baking or whatever), people shouldn’t give answers when they don’t have any knowledge. Burns threads are even worse than this.

Anyone rounding by the method that gives you 13 has a fundamental lack of understanding of the process of rounding.

justaguy · 20/01/2019 21:52

@TigerDroveAgain

If you’ve ever seen a price tag of £1.49 and thought of it as £1.50, you’ve rounded to one decimal place.

ILoveChristmasLights · 20/01/2019 21:52

How can anyone be getting that wrong!!

Because they didn’t have a good education? Because they have forgotten? Because they don’t understand maths because they were in a sink school where the teachers were more focussed on getting out alive than teaching the kids? Who knows?

What I do know is that shit comments like yours don’t help them learn. They don’t create an environment where they feel able to ask.

But still, if it makes you feel good...🙄😖

ILoveChristmasLights · 20/01/2019 21:55

No shit Sherlock.

You can disagree all you like ‍🤷🏻‍♀️ it doesn’t make you right.

Karwomannghia · 20/01/2019 21:55

And people like to say that kids these days can’t do maths!!
What your ds put was correct.

ChrisjenAvasarala · 20/01/2019 21:55

Posting the wrong thing... fine. But then arguing with the millions of corrects posts which very carefully explain the process... That's not fine.

It's ok to be wrong. But it's not OK to continue to insist you are correct despite having it explained, especially when they could spend 30 seconds watching a YouTube video if they care enough to argue.

PaulAnkaDog · 20/01/2019 21:56

...well this turned into an absolute shitshow!
