Unruly family in New Zealand

This article pretty much sums it up :
https://slate.com/human-interest/2019/01/new-zealand-tourists-john-johnson-tina-cash-arrest.html

And while it sounds amusing because it is all minor offences and is only getting press because it's unusual in New Zealand (which has its share of social problems) I feel it's a bit sad for small business owners who have to deal with this on a regular basis.

I’m not sure why you’ve posted this OP other than it’s an amusing story about a loutish family on holiday.

LionWings · 18/01/2019 07:57

I just thought it was interesting that an entire country is outraged when this wouldn't make the news in the UK. Plenty of people have to deal with this kind of behaviour on a daily (? Weekly? Idk) basis.

But if no one is interested, that's fine... Smile

Are you in NZ Lion?

I am, and this story, for some reason, has the nation gripped.

Out of all the things that could have brought us together, united in thought, it's an unruly bunch of tourists.

If they were locals, it wouldn't make the news either. But because they're tourists- and it's high summer (slow news) - we're all embarrassingly obsessed.

LionWings · 18/01/2019 08:00

Plus it is pretty amusing

Makes you proud to be English doesn't it?

LionWings · 18/01/2019 08:12

Yes I am. The whole thing is just crazy considering what else goes on here & doesn't get the media attention. I think you are right that it's because it's tourists and just so brazen. And they are a pretty recognizable bunch.

Was just wondering what people on the other side of the world thought about the reaction to it.

I agree Dowager, the press are delighted to have something to report, far more interesting than reporting on Jacinda😁

I discussed this story with my British husband the other night. I am kiwi and I was explaining to him that behaviour socially in NZ is pretty good. You don’t tend to have people misbehaving in public places much (inside the privacy of home is another thing sadly in NZ where rates of domestic violence are high). New Zealander’s tend to say something very fast to anyone deemed to be misbehaving in public and so this story has not surprised me at all.

LostInTheColonies · 18/01/2019 08:25

I'm in NZ and highly entertained by the whole thing - the complete outrage that tourists dropped litter (a lot of it), tried to scam Burger King and all the rest.
On a related note, have you seen this? hat

Yep, the news is even slower than usual!🤣

TheDowagerCuntess · 18/01/2019 08:27

That Bunnings hat has legendary status now. 😂

TuMeke · 18/01/2019 08:28

Yes, it’s been the number one news item here for a few days! I think it’s the combination of them being tourists, plus how apparently unembarrassed and prolific they seem to be on their trail of destruction of the upper north island...

We’ll be back to endless stories about property prices before too long again though.

TuMeke · 18/01/2019 08:33

That Bunnings hat listing is pretty funny 😄

FiveShelties · 18/01/2019 08:37

Anything is better than news about Winston😁

swimmerforlife · 18/01/2019 08:46

I am from NZ, it's all gone a bit bizarre, I think they are doing it for fun now for the media attention. They are working their way down the island, started off in Auckland, one ended up in court in Hamilton (for trying to steal a Xmas tree I believe!), now they are making mayhem in Wellington.

South Island here they come!

Agree with Dowager, its summer here and nothing is happening - politicians are still on holiday etc, fuck all to report on other than filler shit.

greendale17 · 18/01/2019 08:47

Trashy family

swimmerforlife · 18/01/2019 08:47

I take it your not a fan of the coalition Govt five Grin

EmMcK · 18/01/2019 08:53

I am amazed how invested the whole country has become in them (me invluded). Its just the sheer front of their initial behaviour.
I have total respect for the woman who confronted them about the litter. I suspect they aren't used to being stood up to like them

TheDowagerCuntess · 18/01/2019 08:57

There's two degrees of separation here, which means everyone knows your business and feels compelled to comment.

Very different from Liverpool.

woollyheart · 18/01/2019 08:58

Wouldn't you like to keep them NZ?

Great entertainment for you - they'll be able to keep it up for years!

TheDowagerCuntess · 18/01/2019 09:08

They've apparently run off into the 'Wellington hills' (I'm in Wellington and don't really know exactly what this means), because the locals are out to get them, so I suspect they'll be in their way soon.

Great craic, altogether. Grin

AmIthatbloodycold · 18/01/2019 09:09

I hadn't heard about this until someone posted a thread yesterday

I don't find it amusing at all. Have you seen the video of the little boy?

It would be reported here, but only at a very local level. Local press regularly carry reports and opinions on crimes and mess left by the travelling community.

Maybe NZ isn't used to that, which is maybe why there is so much attention?

TheDowagerCuntess · 18/01/2019 09:15

NZ is absolutely used to this type of behaviour. But from our own, not from any sort of 'traveling community' which is very much outside our realms of normality.

JustHereForThePooStories · 18/01/2019 09:17

I’m laughing at the Brits on here and social media saying it would only happen somewhere as small/quiet as NZ.

Have a family of foreigners wreak havok in Newquay and you’d have an EDL march organised before the Daily Fail could have Tommy Robinson interviewed about it.

AmIthatbloodycold · 18/01/2019 09:18

That's what I meant Duchess. We have plenty of trouble, but this community cause outrage, and while there are good, decent people, most people's experiences with them are negative

I was reading that the same family did the same on Gold Coast before coming to NZ

lljkk · 18/01/2019 09:26
