Unruly family in New Zealand

This article pretty much sums it up :
https://slate.com/human-interest/2019/01/new-zealand-tourists-john-johnson-tina-cash-arrest.html

And while it sounds amusing because it is all minor offences and is only getting press because it's unusual in New Zealand (which has its share of social problems) I feel it's a bit sad for small business owners who have to deal with this on a regular basis.

Daily Wail time line.

LionWings · 18/01/2019 09:41

I think he's just paying for his petrol.

The behaviour, and what they are doing to small businesses isn't amusing but the media coverage and outrage is. We all love to be outraged though.

This appears to be the same family who were being gleefully reported as being Irish in earlier reports linked from Mn a few days ago -- in fact their (supposed) nationality featured in virtually all the tabloid headlines apparently as a key element of their loutishness, because there's a clear link between abandoning poo-filled babygros in planes and Irishness. Then they were Travellers. Now suddenly they are 'British'?

greendale17 · 18/01/2019 09:47

Have a family of foreigners wreak havok in Newquay and you’d have an EDL march organised before the Daily Fail could have Tommy Robinson interviewed about it.

^So true

When you catch their voices on video, they sound like Irish travellers sound.
(I don't believe for a moment that all Irish travellers are anti-social gits, btw).

The Sun has tracked down neighbours who say they are foul where they live, too. Leave Rubbish & anti-social, etc.
I guess kids not in school in Britain?

They don't look much like the supposedly Irish traveller family kicked out of Aus in 2018 (so I think a separate group of miscreants).

SinisterBumFacedCat · 18/01/2019 10:10

Sounds like a film plot with the onesie. It's goes to show how much we tolerate bad behaviour in the UK, probably due to fear of repercussions. Their poor neighbours.

TwinPair · 18/01/2019 10:12

they sound like Irish travellers
They're from Liverpool. The boy's accent sounds Irish but the man's accent sounds English. The family clarified they are "not Irish" and "not gypsies".

AmIthatbloodycold · 18/01/2019 10:13

From the video of the child they sound like travellers. As I said some decent members of that community but this kind of behaviour matches my experience of them

lljkk · 18/01/2019 10:14

I don't trust anything that family says about themselves, why would you.

Bittermints · 18/01/2019 10:25

This may be a naive question, but where has all the money come from for a long holiday on the other side of the world for a huge extended family?

lljkk · 18/01/2019 10:27

We'll soon know if any of them are on benefits.

Bittermints · 18/01/2019 10:29

Silly me, I was forgetting that John Johnson has said his grandfather was the tenth richest man in England. I like that Slate has looked that up and considers the current Duke of Westminster fits the bill.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 18/01/2019 10:33

Sorry there's a marked difference between an Irish accent and a traveller accent. Definitely traveller accent on the kid.

TwinPair · 18/01/2019 10:36

Same by nature as by name. No need for concern. We may start a go fund me page to keep them in NZ. Grin

bringbacksideburns · 18/01/2019 10:42

It doesn't amuse me.

They are a bunch of arseholes who presumably get away with acting like feral tosspots in the UK all the time without consequence. Breeding yet another generation of selfish, aggressive arseholes that unfortunately the rest of us have to put up with.

Imagine being stuck on a plane with that lot.

lljkk · 18/01/2019 10:42

I'm bad with accents, you can hear a lot of their voices here.

"Anyt'ing to hide..." is that Scouser? The locals think they sound Irish.

I thought a clip of the girl-always-in-pink sounded Irish, too in a separate clip (when she answered a Q why Tina Marie stole items).

NotDavidTennant · 18/01/2019 10:45

They're from Liverpool.

When people talk about Irish Travellers, they mean members of the travelling community that originated in Ireland. Not necessarily that they are Irish nationals.

LionWings · 18/01/2019 10:49

I think behaviours both like this and others are tolerated in lots of places due to fear & intimidation.

3WildOnes · 18/01/2019 11:04

They definitely sound like gypsies.

TwinPair · 18/01/2019 11:13

I am not amused by them either.

Their extended family (previous generations) may be Irish but this family are English. They live in England and are English born and bred. They have said as much.

AmIthatbloodycold · 18/01/2019 11:40

Lljkk. Yes they sound like Irish travellers.

British passport holders, live in England but they sound like travellers.

MacarenaFerreiro · 18/01/2019 11:49

Can you IMAGINE being in among this lot on a flight to NZ? Just awful.

Kiwis, you know we're not all like this bunch of yobs. Most of us are lovely.

lljkk · 18/01/2019 11:51

Long haul flights are so dull I could half enjoy people watching them, tbh. The total shamelessness of their behaviour is magnificent (in a horrible way).

user1493423934 · 18/01/2019 12:18

I'm also in NZ and agree with the poster who said it's been very quiet news wise (parliament not back til Feb I believe) and i guess it gives them something to concentrate on rather than the fact that 21 people have died on the roads so far this year already.
Latest is that the travellers are accusing NZers of racism . . . oh dear
