I'm looking at buying a highchair and want to be able to use from birth so I can have baby in the kitchen / at the table with me.

Which would you choose out if the Hauck Alpha plus & the Chicco Polly Magic?

The wooden one. It'll be easier to clean! The plastic one has lots of nooks and crannies for food to get stuck in. I had one like the plastic one and I hated it. No ed on to booster seats ASAP. But also beware my kids hated hated hated high chairs and from birth I mostly had to eat one handed while holding them.

Stillmonday · 16/01/2019 13:00

I know it's a risk buying but I'd like to give it a go and if my baby doesn't like it then at least they both last for the first few years.

I do like the wooden one but just think it doesn't look very comfy after the newborn stage..

I had one quite similar the wooden one, so easy to wipe down. Ours had a cushion set which I bough and used about twice, It went through the wash easily enough but was such a faff to get back on I didn't bother. Neither child seemed to be bothered.

The downside was that the tray was really small and had no edge so it was a bit too easy for everything to end up on the floor. In the kitchen we just used it as a chair up to our table, which was fine. Didn't work so well in the dinning room where the table isn't easy to wipe down.

We used it till they were 6 or 7 so got out moneys worth but I did keep eyeing up the IKEA chairs when we were in the learning to feed themselves stage. No doubt if I'd lived nearer IKEA I would have got one

I got a Chico one that was £150 and I honestly wish I had got the £14 ikea one!

Stillmonday · 16/01/2019 13:50

Good point about the tray on the wooden one, I hadn't thought about that.

Country why did you w

Whoops

Why did you wish you bought the Ikea one?

Sorry I know you isn’t ask for alternatives but I would 100% recommend the Ikea antilop. It can all go in the dishwasher, no crevices for food to get lodged, cheap, easy to dismantle to store. It’s a great chair.

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 16/01/2019 13:57

Between those two, definitely the wooden one! They have that Chicco one on display in our local mothercare and it’s a beast!

I get that you want baby tableside from newborn, but honestly consider saving yourself some money and just move your bouncer/baby beanbag to the side of the kitchen table for meal times. That’s what we did, and when dd had good head control we just bought the £14 ikea chair with the support cushion and she’d sit at the table with us from about 3months.

thebigmaniswatching · 16/01/2019 14:16

Our ikea one is nearly 3 years old, still going strong. It gets hosed down in the garden to clean it, with my first we had a fancy expensive one and it used to drive me mad trying to get it clean so we got the IKEA one second time and it’s fab!

Winegumaddict · 16/01/2019 14:16

Oh yes if you want an alternative definitely the Ikea one. If I'd bought for myself taht what I would have got. So easy to clean! I was given the Chicco and refused to pass it on as it was so terrible it went in the skip. I also agree about moving your bouncer from room to room so much easier.

PennyMordauntsLadyBrain · 16/01/2019 14:18

It gets hosed down in the garden to clean it

Honestly thought I was the only person who did this!

BollocksToBrexit · 16/01/2019 14:22

I agree with the Ikea one. We popped the legs off and stuck in the dishwasher a few times.

ThanksItHasPockets · 16/01/2019 14:23

Ikea Antilop is fab but only suitable from approx 6 months.

For the price of the Chicco you could probably get a second-hand Stokke Tripp Trapp and newborn set.

NannyR · 16/01/2019 14:25

I've worked in lots of family homes over the years and all the parents who have splashed out on the big, multi function, reclining high chairs have swapped them for an Ikea antilop by the time the baby is about 8 months old. Simple reason is the simplicity and easy clean design.
The other option is a stokke tripp trapp which I've seen used from weaning to teenagers, so good value for money. I find it quite tricky to keep spotlessly clean though - there are lots of slots and joins where food gets stuck.

Dogsorlogs · 16/01/2019 14:27

Another vote for Ikea. We had a reclining padded one at first and it just got awful in the stitching and straps.

Ikea one goes in dishwasher fab.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 16/01/2019 14:31

Alsoworked in a lot (a LOT) of family homes and have had experience of so many highchairs.

Padded ones are a nightmare to clean, then the plastic splits and they’re basically crap!

Wooden ones are easier to clean, surprisingly comfy and you can buy padded cushions for most of them

But the IKEA Antilop is undoubtably the best one ever. Comfy, can buy a padded cushion, SO easy to clean. Definitely my favourite

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 16/01/2019 14:32

And on the padded ones, the straps often don’t come off and they become absolutely disgusting!

BikeRunSki · 16/01/2019 14:36

Of those two, the wooden one. The other one will be hideous to clean. You have no idea how much mess a weaning baby can make.

BUT - of all the high chairs on the market, the Ikea Antilop at less than £20. Often resellers on eBay and Amazon if you can’t get to Ikea, although I think they deliver now.

CoperCabana · 16/01/2019 14:42

If you are dead keen to have your baby at the table in a high chair, I would look for a secondhand Chicco Polly Magic. I got one on eBay for not much and it was fab. Could recline right back or you can add the toy arch. Was invaluable with a wee one and a toddler for meal times. We passed it onto a friend as the use of it is pretty short lived and then they passed it on also. Once weaning, I got the cheap Ikea one.

Troels · 16/01/2019 14:49

Aldi has an Ikea look alike in store at the moment. £10.99

Blueroses99 · 16/01/2019 15:29

I have the Chico Polly Magic, it was perfect for DD as she was premature so she started weaning before she could fit in an IKEA Antelope. Once she could though, the latter was much better for cleaning and more comfortable too. We had a separate bouncer chair though and if she hadn’t, she would have gotten more use out of the Chico.

Sugarhouse · 16/01/2019 20:23

If I were you just get a cheap little bouncer for now and then get an ikea antilop only £14 and are brill wish I got one sooner.I hated my old high chair was a pain to clean and my son would rock in it so I was terrified he was going to tip over. Ikea one is so easy to clean and very sturdy and I believe you can buy cushions to go in them as well for support and comfort if you wish.

thebigmaniswatching · 16/01/2019 20:29

@PennyMordauntsLadyBrain it’s the only way to do it!!!

Minibea · 16/01/2019 20:34

I had the Chico one and hate it- far too big and hard to keep clean. Honestly wish I’d just got the ikea one. In your position I’d just get a little bouncer for the newborn stage

LivLemler · 16/01/2019 20:51

Another vote for bouncer and then IKEA. DD was a big baby and could pretty much hold her head up from birth - she was sitting at the table in the antilop with the padded cushion from 3 months, and loved it. Before that we ate in the living room, taking it in turns to eat while the other held her she sat in the bouncer or slept in the pram (hahaha she did that once while we ate).
