Does anyone know the secret to long lasting, lovely smelling washing?

Just that really. I’ve copied everything my Mum does - particularly for bedding and it works for a bit but my bedding never keeps the lovely smell for more than a night!

Lenor Unstoppables is lovely, but my skin didn't agree. It played havoc with my eczema.

My mum is brilliant at washing in a way I will never be. There is a lovely scene in a Julie Walters drama where she is reconciled with her son who she gave up for adoption at birth. He has become very successful and hasn’t some very expensive shirts and he’s horrified when he finds out she has washed them for him. Then he sees the shirts and they are immaculate. That kind of reminds me of my dmum.

Also might sound obvious but not overloading the machine and taking out and hanging up as soon as its finished. We also use a dehumidifier under the airer so things dry quicker so then there's no damp smell :)

Oh and I never use conditioner anyway, but with bold has it built in, but with the powder it doesn't have that same slimy oily effect.

I love the smell of the teal Lenor Unstoppables. I'm actually considering taking a small bag of it to the hospital when I go into labour as a calming smell Blush

BlackPrism · 16/01/2019 12:25

Drying it outside

Please don’t. You could make others really unwell.

I actually found my washing machine was just old and a bit smelly. When I got a new one I was stunned at the difference. Maybe try running a washing machine cleaner through it

OutPinked · 16/01/2019 13:47

I noticed my laundry smells much better since I got a new machine... my old one was making the clothes smell damp despite me cleaning the machine out.

Also tumble drying makes a lot of difference.

VenusClapTrap · 16/01/2019 14:00

Drying outside on the line makes a world of difference.

Bowchicawowow · 16/01/2019 14:27

How would Lenor Unstoppables make people ill?

PoutySprout · 16/01/2019 14:35

Some people can’t deal with strong (artificial) smells. I can’t walk within 10 metres of Lush without wretching.

MulticolourMophead · 16/01/2019 14:48

I dry outdoors where I can, and on a rack indoors otherwise. I clean out the machine drawer regularly, and use powder not washing liquid or tabs. I use a small amount of fabric conditioner.

I also don't fold up the dry stuff until it's at room temperature. My ex had a habit of touching the clothing, announce it was dry, and just a bit cold, and fold up. He would never accept that if it felt cold, it was still damp enough to create a smell when folded.

Celebelly · 16/01/2019 14:50

You'll only be able to smell it if you hold it up to your nose so I think it'll be fine! I'm presuming random passers-by won't be popping in and smelling my possessions while I'm pushing a baby out.

Bowchicawowow · 16/01/2019 14:55

Poutysproat That is pretty extreme condition you have. Does it have a name? Life must be really difficult for you.

Tinty · 16/01/2019 15:01

Pink Surf and blue Lenor.

But I keep getting seduced by other brands persil on offer and then my washing doesn't smell as nice. Sad And I have a brand new (well a month old) washing machine. It was lovely when I washed with Surf and not so lovely now I'm using Persil. To be fair it is just as clean though, which I guess is the point. Grin

Not really. I just like the lining of my lungs to stay put.

Not uncommon. I know lots of people that can’t bear scented candles, air fresheners, fabric softeners etc.

Bowchicawowow · 16/01/2019 15:23

I really don’t think that smelling lenor will damage the lining of your lungs. It’s fabric softener not asbestos.

“Hello, new baby. Welcome to the world. Have some toxic air to get you started. It’ll get you ready for all those diesel fumes you’ll be ingesting in your exhaust-level pushchair soon.”

Lovely.

RiverTam · 16/01/2019 15:33

God, I would have hated that kind of artificial smell in hospital! I can't be in the same room as an unlit scented candle without getting a headache - this entire thread is giving me a headache!

I like my laundry to smell of nothing, but agree that outdoor drying is the best.

Bowchicawowow · 16/01/2019 15:40

I doubt those websites will prove that smelling a fabric softener will remove the lining from your lungs.

Celebelly · 16/01/2019 15:44

Unfortunately our child will be no stranger to toxic air as our dog farts like a trooper.
