Roundabout situation - which lane do you use?

GunpowderGelatine · 15/01/2019 19:33

Say you're approaching a roundabout that has 3 exits as follows:
Exit 1: At 12 o clock/straight ahead
Exit 2: At 3 o clock/ left
Exit 2: At 6 o clock/going back where you came from.

You need to use exit 2, and there are 2 lanes going round the roundabout. Do you:
A. use the right hand lane all the way round to the exit or
B. Use the left hand lane, moving into the right hand lane once you've passed the first exit?

I know which I use, and what I was taught when learning to drive, but I'm lead to believe there are 2 camps of people on this with differing views. Which lane would you use and why please?

TIA Grin

There are still two exit 2s

FFS. Does anyone know how to reset my brain?

3 O'clock position for exit would be taking the right lane upon entry to the roundabout, then when passing the 12 O'clock position, you indicate and filter into the left lane ready to exit at 3 O'clock.

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 15/01/2019 20:38

if you are turning right (at three o'clock) having come from the six o'clock position you should be in the outside or right lane, which will lead you directly into the turn, no need to switch lanes

staying on the left until you have not taken the 12 o clock position means you are going to run someone off the road who was expecting you to go straight on. I would beep you and throw my hands up in the air making the international sign language of WhatThe Actual Fuck? or DidYourLicenceFallOutofACerealPacket?

Mummyilovejokes1 · 15/01/2019 21:02

If I'm turning right i use the right-hand lane, many many drivers do not! I have witnessed many near misses on roundabouts near where we live, particularly lorries who drive down the left hand lane and go around the roundabout to take the 3rd exit still in the left hand lane. I daren't go straight over in a right hand lane these days. There are no road markings to suggest that you can do it

DragginBallsEEEE · 15/01/2019 21:24

I was taught to do B. Passed my test late 2018.

DP is adamant he was taught A, passed in 2006.

EarringsandLipstick · 15/01/2019 21:27

This thread is hilarious 😂

(It’s B for sure)

PivotPivotPivottt · 15/01/2019 21:27

I'm learning to drive and have been taught to do B.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 15/01/2019 21:33

It's clearly B.
People who do A (whether or not they are indicating right) boil my piss, even worse than people who are in the RH lane but go straight ahead, cutting up people in the LH lane when they 'merge' back in.

leghairdontcare · 15/01/2019 21:40

Unless markings indicate otherwise, if you are turning left or going straight on you use the left hand land, anything after that use the right hand lane.

Don't expect other road users to follow these rules.

Tatapie · 15/01/2019 21:46

Grinlove this thread. Glad you got there in the end OP!
It's B.

GunpowderGelatine · 15/01/2019 21:47

Right now we have (kind of) establishes WTF I'm going on about, I agree it's B!!! My mum and others I've met swear blind it's A because "for the first 2 exits you always use the left hand lanes" - even if there are ONLY 2 exits on the roundabout! There's a roundabout near me that I drive over everyday full of A people and the amount of time little B me has had a near miss is infuriating

OP posts:
ChoccyBiccyTastic · 15/01/2019 21:49

Any exits past 12 o'clock are the right hand lane- even if it's the 1st exit.

LucyInTheSkyy · 15/01/2019 21:51

Proper giggles. I do this all the time, OP; try to explain something, then lead people off in different directions (pardon the pun!) as I'm trying to clarify...I high five you!

But in seriousness, in answer to the question, it's whatever is a multiple of 10.

Rockbird · 15/01/2019 21:51

I constantly have this argument discussion with DH. If there are two lanes approaching a roundabout the left hand lane is for left or straight. The right hand lane for right and going back on yourself.

I’ve been hit by someone doing A on a dual carriageway (where road markings show both lanes can go straight on).

Absolutely the A person at fault.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 15/01/2019 22:06

I would do B. I was also taught you can go straight ahead in the right lane as long as you come off in the right lane at the exit.

bluejelly · 15/01/2019 22:08

I still don't 100% get it. I get that if you are turning right at 3 o'clock you need to be in the right hand lane. But after 12 o'clock do you need to move into the left hand lane to leave the roundabout? Surely no-one will be going past exit 2 in the left hand lane and not leaving there?

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 15/01/2019 22:16

Well, it’s, B (and I passed in 1988). You should think about confiscating his car keys.

gamerchick · 15/01/2019 22:22

You only use the left lane to turn right if the road markings tell you you can.

If find this quite scary tbh. No wonder there's so many near misses on the roads.

gamerchick · 15/01/2019 22:27

Mind I was a passenger recently in a car with someone who jumped red light, used a compulsory right lane in a roundabout and used the first exit. Couldn't pick a lane full stop and went back and forth between 2 consistently.

I felt actual fear and made a mental note to refuse all offers of lifts in future

DragginBallsEEEE · 15/01/2019 22:30

There's a few other things that we were taught differently but this roundabout thing was the one that he really thought he was right about til a quick google showed him I was right. He uses the right lane now. He was also never taught reference points in regards to lane position etc.

TokenGinger · 15/01/2019 22:32

It's B. I passed my test 2007.

Checked with my dad (who owns a driving school), he said B.
