How to dispose of a mouse caught in a sticky trap

Apologies if anyone is offended by this thread. Our cat is quite elderly and not the mouser she used to be, I tried a conventional little nipper mouse trap but no avail it just gobbled all the bait without getting caught. I'm now contemplating a sticky tray trap but worried it's very cruel and what do you do once you've caught the offending mouse?

Don't use sticky traps. They're barbaric. The mouse is so stressed and can lose skin and body parts struggling to get free.

Bishalisha · 14/01/2019 17:07

It is incredibly cruel. Please don’t consider using a sticky pad.

What are you putting in the traps?

Aquamarine1029 · 14/01/2019 17:07

Please, please don't buy sticky traps. They are horrifyingly cruel. Keep trying with the traditional traps. Place the bait further back and they will work.

Kernowgal · 14/01/2019 17:08

Please don't. They are inhumane. The snap traps are not failsafe but the chances of the mouse dying instantly are much better. You need to set several traps though.

KitsandCaboodles · 14/01/2019 17:08

What bait are you using?

MrsMarigold · 14/01/2019 17:09

Stilton smeared with Nutella

yep sticky traps are cruel.
sorry can't help on humane dispatch. I would probably whack it with a brick for instant death.

fenneltea · 14/01/2019 17:09

You're right, they are extremely cruel and should be banned. Dispatching can be done by hitting them with a shovel, but the poor creature could well have been suffering for many hours before you find it. A quick kill trap is much better to use.

MrsMarigold · 14/01/2019 17:11

I'm fairly desperate to get rid of them but the trap seems to be useless any other alternatives?

HarrySnotter · 14/01/2019 17:11

Can't you get a humane trap and take the mouse outside away from the house? Please don't use these sticky traps, they really are so cruel.

LurkyMcLurky · 14/01/2019 17:12

Use a humane trap with some peanut butter and chocolate (or a Snickers bar). Then take it down the garden and set it free. Always works for us when the lazy cat won't get them,

KitsandCaboodles · 14/01/2019 17:13

Try peanut butter. Put a seed, chocolate chip or small nut in the middle of if. Skip the Stilton and set several traps sticky traps should be illegal.

MrsMarigold · 14/01/2019 17:13

I was trying the humane trap but haven't caught any mice and it's been scoffing Stilton and nutella since NYE. No sticky traps yet.

Don’t get a humane trap they’re anything but, you take the mouse away and it runs around not know where to get food and starves or gets eaten by a predator ffs get a snap trap, job done.

Gumbo · 14/01/2019 17:14
Shock This reminds me of a colleague a few years ago that did this. Having caught the mouse and not knowing what to do with it, she then spent ages trying to work out whether she could just cut out little 'shoes' for the mouse from the trap and let it run free...Hmm Hint: she couldn't Sad
AliceLutherNeeMorgan · 14/01/2019 17:15

Yes if you just use peanut butter you can wedge it down into the little hole so the nose has to come right in to the snap trap. Don’t use sticky traps; totally inhumane!

MrsMarigold · 14/01/2019 17:19

I just wish the cat would do her job to save me the worry. I'll get out the peanut butter this evening.

gamerchick · 14/01/2019 17:20

Plus if your cat stood on one then what would you do?

You need to learn how to bait your traps better.

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 14/01/2019 17:21

re disposal - our cat used to leave the bodies in the garden as gifts. We tied them in dog poo bags and put them in the dustbin.

Heyha · 14/01/2019 17:21

They can often work out traditional spring traps as well but I've found if you use a human trap that has option of spring traps inside it as well there's less chance of the mouse taking the bait and leaving. They'll only come back if you use a humane trap, that or die a prolonged death of confusion. Still better than than sticky traps though, they're gross

Bewarethequietboy · 14/01/2019 17:21

I use a blob of peanut butter smeared on little nipper traps. They seem to work well although I don’t know how much they get away with before being caught!

Heyha · 14/01/2019 17:22

Humane not human trap!!

Mrbay · 14/01/2019 17:22

I'd rather use a terrier than a sticky pad.
If you have a rodent issue, perhaps get a younger cat to help with the issue.

adviceonthepox · 14/01/2019 17:22

I have used sticky traps after trying humane traps and snap traps, I couldn't use poison as had other pets and children I kid you not I caught 2 mice within 1/2 hour of putting them down. I put them in a bag and used a shovel to kill them. Mice are vermin and I have no compunction about using whatever means to get rid. After the first 2 I caught no more but would use them again if I had to.

Bowchicawowow · 14/01/2019 17:25

I have used the bucket of water with a wire smeared with peanut butter method. They slip off the wire and drown. I am sorry if mouse/rat lovers are offended.
