How to dispose of a mouse caught in a sticky trap

Apologies if anyone is offended by this thread. Our cat is quite elderly and not the mouser she used to be, I tried a conventional little nipper mouse trap but no avail it just gobbled all the bait without getting caught. I'm now contemplating a sticky tray trap but worried it's very cruel and what do you do once you've caught the offending mouse?

I feel physically sick reading this. Get a humane trap (mine works a treat) or snaptrap them ffs.

NeverHadANickname · 17/01/2019 16:21

Chocolate worked well in a humane trap for me.

Gromance02 · 17/01/2019 16:25

Perch me too. I can't believe there are people that can treat another creature so horrifically. I hope they or their family are never subject to wilful slow deaths at the hands of another.

Asta19 · 17/01/2019 16:32

Yeah I mean when I came down one night to find them partying it up on my kitchen work surfaces I should have just carried on trying to find some other way while we got more and more over run. Easy to judge if you're not in the situation. Suffocation an already subdued mouse is quick and painless. Not so sure smashing it with a brick is much "kinder".

AldiLidlDeeDee · 17/01/2019 16:40

I have 2 cats that like to bring them in and play for a bit, then they get bored and wander off leaving me to catch the critter. Just chuck a tea towel over the mouse and then pick it up. I live rurally and have never used a mouse trap in my life. I've even caught the odd live rat before. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Inghamhater · 17/01/2019 16:49

Jesus Christ this thread is horrific reading.

safariboot · 17/01/2019 17:10

Glue traps are particularly horrible.

There's no nice way to kill an animal, but I think a good snap trap is the least bad option for mice.

userschmoozer · 17/01/2019 17:16

Don't cover it in oil to 'release' it from a glue trap, you are just releasing a cold, oil soaked animal which will die miserably.
Don't put it in the freezer.
Don't suffocate it while it is conscious.

Just use a snap trap if you don't know how to humanely euthanase an animal.

cannaethink · 17/01/2019 18:04

I found putting double sided tape on the snap trap (on the tilted square bit with the bait) meant I had better success with them.

cheesywotnots · 17/01/2019 18:11

Jeez this is a horrid thread, if you have mice then try and reduce the risk of them getting in.

Time40 · 17/01/2019 18:14

By far the best bait I've ever found for a snap mousetrap is Rollos. I think the caramel in them is particularly sticky. They really have to worry at it, and that sets the trap off.

I'd no idea that sticky traps existed. They sound vile.

MrMeSeeks · 17/01/2019 18:20

They just lay there quietly and sadly.... I suffocated them by placing the trap and mouse in a plastic food bag and tying it up tight"

My god along with the drowning there really are some sick posts on here Hmm

BlueEyedBengal · 17/01/2019 18:25

Not had mice ever in my house but when I had cats that had access to the outside my doorstep would be covered in the victims of the night right mice rats and once a enormous rabbit! I now have an indoor Bengal aged 10 that cannot even catch a fly that has landed a foot away from him so probably pointless if a rodent visited. But maybe a nice young cat that my make your old one remember his instincts maybe the way and if you have a mouse problem you need to get rid of them someways or other maybe a predator is the better way.

BoswellsLastStand · 17/01/2019 18:57

This is brilliant

Electrocutes them swiftly and humanely - and you don't even have to see it or touch it. A red light shows when it's dead and you just take the unit outside to the trash and tip it in.

I think they sell this on Amazon uk as my friend has one.

Asta19 · 17/01/2019 19:00

Oh for goodness sake, there's some real over reaction on here to getting rid of vermin. A lot of poisons cause them to bleed internally and die a horrible death but I guess that's ok as you don't have to look at it. Where in my post did I say I took any pleasure in what I did? God the way some people are reacting you'd think I boiled a saucepan full of kittens! Hmm

Bowchicawowow · 17/01/2019 19:11

I didn’t get any joy from drowning a mouse. I didn’t want to do it. I tried everything else and this worked. I had a person in the house who was vulnerable to infection and having a mouse running around wasn’t a good idea.

averylongtimeago · 17/01/2019 19:31

These are the traps I have best results from.
Nutella, peanut butter, marzipan all work well. You may need to experiment to find the best one for your mice.
Put down lots of traps along their "runs". Mice often follow the same route to the food, place on the route. Sometimes they give new things a wide berth for a day or two, so allow for that.

Check and block any holes in skirting boards, round pipe work and backs of cupboards. Mice can fit through a hole not much thicker than a pencil.

Glue traps are revolting- very very cruel.

What worked for us after mice ignored snap traps was to open the sachets of poison and spread out on two paper plates. We set them on floor either side of our eaves cupboard in loft and two weeks later when we returned from holiday, all bait gone and no sign of mice after several months of torment. Snap traps worked initially and were then ignored. The blocks of poison were ignored. What also helped was filling all gaps in house with steel wool and placing wire mesh over air bricks. Also wear gloves when handling traps or poison as mice will smell you and avoid traps. We saturated our house with poison even as far as pushing it up through the gaps for ceiling spotlights as we heard mice between floors. No idea if it worked but the blue grain bait removed from sachets worked a treat. No animals or young children in my house so easier to do.

MrsMarigold · 20/01/2019 11:37

Well good news snap back traps remain untouched but our cat is back on form and caught two mice. I'm struggling to sort out the air bricks but we haven't got poos in the food cupboard now

That's good. Some of these responses are awful :(

I felt so sad about having to kill mice in our house. DH set snap traps with peanut butter but he hated it. I'd have left them alone but the day after finding out I was pregnant, I found mouse poo under my pillow.

One was caught within 30 seconds of setting a trap behind my bed. I wouldn't look at their little bodies. I've had lots of pet mice and they're so sweet!

Hedgehog80 · 20/01/2019 12:00

We had to resort to sticky traps. Once caught you have to quickly fold them over and stamp on them so it’s over quick
Tried everything else and baby number 5 was due so we gave in and used glue traps as didn’t want mouse urine or droppings around.

Hedgehog80 · 20/01/2019 12:01

Our mice ignored humane traps, snap traps, and poison
