i found using that dettol stuff you put in the wash really helped.

Reaa · 13/01/2019 12:39

90 wash, lots of washing powder for today.

I use the dettol machine wash stuff on work clothes and that gets rid of armpit smells even on a lower heat.

Spray the armpits with white vingear before washinh, works a treat

Could try pre-treating by putting neat washing liquid onto the armpits before putting them in the machine.

Could try washing with Napisan or similar.

Or could spray (or roll) deodorant onto the armpits of the shirts and leave for a while before washing... I have found this to be v effective (although I wouldn't try it on anything delicate or valuable).

What washing powder are you using? Laundry liquid won't cut it. You need to be using biological washing powder.

Overseasmom100 · 13/01/2019 13:09

Using fairy non bio liquid. Dont have any vinegar or the dettol stuff so today will put on a 90 wash for 2 hours!

scrub the armpit area with neat biological liquid and leave to soak for 2 hours. Wash on a 90.

BillywigSting · 13/01/2019 13:11

What temperature did you wash them on?

Anything less than 40 and my t shirts still smell

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 13/01/2019 13:12

Use Bio instead of Non-Bio with shirts. Wash on 60.

Julianaa · 13/01/2019 13:13

Agree with vinegar, it works a treat! I soak sweaty sports kit in vinegar diluted in a basin of water for 30 mins before washing and tops with smelly armpits for up to an hour, or just apply a squirt of vinegar to the smelly bit and leave to soak in before putting in the wash. I only wash on 30° with Ecover and vinegar gets out all of the smells.

ratspeaker · 13/01/2019 13:15

I spray the armpits with a vinegar solution then wash as normal.
Im always wary of washing stuff at high temp if the label says a lower temperature

bibbitybobbityyhat · 13/01/2019 13:19

I wash shirts at 40 on a long cycle with bio powder. Unfortunately, lots of things will shrink at 60.

Those with whiffy armpits get a spray of cold water on the inside of the armpit and rubbed with Dettol antibacterial bar soap before they go in the wash. Works a treat.

Buy pure cotton shirts next time, as it is polyester which usually holds body odour. Cotton doesn’t. Poly mixes also smell more quickly when worn.

User12345677777 · 13/01/2019 13:21

We use the halo washing liquid for sports wear / odours etc. Can get it in the supermarket

greenelephantscarf · 13/01/2019 13:21

wash at least at 40
bio powder
white vinegar in softener compartment
if you can hang up outside to dry

GreenTulips · 13/01/2019 13:22

Hot wash - for longer

Every half term I soak them all in the bath in a Whitner for a few days

Sunlight also takes away the smell so line dry in the warmer months

Lifeofa · 13/01/2019 13:23

Use Vanish in the pink tub, mix a bit with water apply the paste to the underarm area leave overnight and wash as normal

Newsername · 13/01/2019 13:24

If you have no vinegar, do you have baking powder or bicarbonate of soda? That always does a job in all house keeping situations. I’m sure it would draw the smell out. Grin

Blackboot · 13/01/2019 13:28

Sports detergent. Got some in lidl. Great stuff.

FreshlyWashed · 13/01/2019 13:30

I think the open air helps. Wash and hang outside for 3 or 4 hours. May not dry in this weather, so you'll need to make sure they're dry before school

troubleswillbeoutofsight · 13/01/2019 13:31

Pour over a little mouth wash and leave for a few minutes before washing as usual. No need for hot wash

Cauliflowersqueeze · 13/01/2019 13:32

Non bio is no good.
And liquid is not as effective as powder.

Use bio powder (Lidl Formil or Ariel powder) and splash in some dettol laundry, put it on at 60 degrees and come back to us and tell us if it’s gone.

CarolDanvers · 13/01/2019 13:36

I second Fairy washing up liquid. Rub it into the area, leave for half an hour then wash. Works every time.

CarolDanvers · 13/01/2019 13:37

Oh sorry got confused there. I use washing up liquid, that you'd usually use for dishes.

Cakemadeoffruit · 13/01/2019 13:38

Liberal spraying of multi surface cleaner, (usually the cheaper the better - I like elbow grease) then leave to stand for ten mins before putting in a normal wash.
