I use a cap of zoflora with any sports kit.

twentypencemore · 13/01/2019 13:42

Zoflora, the linen fragrance one.

Spray white vinegar

OneStepMoreFun · 13/01/2019 13:50

I use 2 hr wash at 60C with Fairy non bio and a capful or two of Zoflora linen.

DriveShaft · 13/01/2019 13:56

I have to use fairy non bio due to DS2’s skin but I wash them at 60 and I spray a little vinegar and water mix under the arms. I was amazed at how well it worked nit just in the smell but on the deodorant/sweat rings on teenagers shirts.

Overseasmom100 · 13/01/2019 15:01

Wow so many suggestions thank you!

Washer is nearly finished so will see...I tend to notice whem they atr dry.

Will give some of these a good go as cant keep washing on 90 for 2 hours (only setting on my machine for a 90)

Biological washing powder is essential and temps over 60 degrees kill bacteria (and it's bacteria that's causing the smell). So those two things together are essential.

It annoys me that we've all been encouraged to wash at low temps and to use non-bio liquids, because they don't get dirty or smelly clothes clean!

Els1e · 13/01/2019 15:03

Another vote for white vinegar.

steppemum · 13/01/2019 15:08

fairy non-bio won't get anything out.

Various options.

  1. hotter wash - you don't need 90, 60 should do it and even 40 if you combine with different powder. 30 is useless for anythign biological (BO, blood etc)
  2. Use a pre-treatment spray eg Vanish, or supermarket own version
  3. use a decent bio powder eg ariel, or persil

Napisan and bio washing liquid

I agree. Did you see a watchdog type program where a family had brought an eco machine and it didn’t go above 30 - there was mould all over the clothes - so the machine was constantly dirty?

Knickers and bedding should be washed at 60 at least

EyUpOurKid · 13/01/2019 17:04

Cap of zoflora in each wash. Dh quite often stinks and this has made his work and gym kit not disgusting.

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 13/01/2019 18:01

DH uses the oxy tesco spray, then a bottle of diluted vanish gold in a spray bottle, then finally a squirt of white vinegar. We wash with laundry cleanser as well.

juneau · 13/01/2019 18:37

Absolutely! Underwear almost always has faecal bacteria on it - particularly when it belongs to DC who are poor wipers. If you're not using a bio powder and washing at a minimum of 60 degrees then you're not killing that bacteria, so whatever has been in the machine with that laundry will basically have shit on it. Why is not common knowledge? Why is putting your machine on an 'eco' setting seen as being more important???

MyNameIsNotSteven · 13/01/2019 18:40

Those saying put Dettol or Zoflora in, where do you put it?

Oldraver · 13/01/2019 18:40

Im always wary of washing stuff at high temp if the label says a lower temperature

Every single pair of cotton sheets I have bought the last few years say 40degrees, which I dont think hot enough

juneau · 13/01/2019 18:43

You can put it in either the detergent drawer or the fabric softener bit Steven.

MyNameIsNotSteven · 13/01/2019 18:56

Do you think it would go in the middle bit? (I never know what that's for!) or do you just use it instead of powder / conditioner?

juneau · 13/01/2019 19:27

I put my detergent into the drum with the washing, the Dettol in the drawer, and the fabric softener in the bit with the flower pattern on it.

Kelpiex2 · 13/01/2019 19:36

I use Ecover powder in a little cup thing then a cap of zoflora on the powder.

Cup then goes in drum.

dischargepaperwork · 13/01/2019 19:41

Almost everything in this house goes on a 60 degree wash with an. Extra scoop of nappy sanitiser for tops, uniforms and underwear. Some things go on a 90 now and again.

Anything that can't cope with that has failed the test and has no further role in our household Grin almost everything is absolutely fine. Precious things are obviously spared.

Overseasmom100 · 13/01/2019 21:01

I need to change my wash progtammes full stop. I was everything on a 40 because that or so I thougbt was the trend. Always used non bio gel since DS was a baby...so should I be moving to a bio powder now

OP posts:
LoniceraJaponica · 13/01/2019 21:09

"I need to change my wash progtammes full stop"

And ditch the laundry liquid, and use bio washing owder instead.

juneau · 13/01/2019 21:11

You can still wash stuff at 40 if you use bio detergent and/or add Dettol OP. Some dark things can fade if you use bio detergent (like black jeans, for instance), others may shrink or be damaged, so cool wash plus bio and/or Dettol will still get them clean. But 40 and non-bio will not kill bacteria, which is very relevant when washing items belonging to babies and DC.

As for powder vs. gel, powder does get stains out much better and Which magazine recommends powder for smelly gym clothes!
