Is grey carpet still the in thing?

I need to replace carpets throughout most of my house before putting it up for sale. Is grey still the in colour for carpeting?

I need it to be something light but just wondering if the grey fad is still going strong?

If you are selling please don't put grey carpet everywhere! Apart from the fact that grey is now apparently passe, a lot of people won't want it in every room. I saw a house like that on Right Move recently, it looked awful, they had gone so mad with the grey everywhere.

isseywithcats · 13/01/2019 11:29

i have mid grey carpet in my hallway and up the stairs it was here when we moved in (rented house) its ok actually its a good quality one and looks good when its hoovered and dosent seem to get that dirty inbetween, whichever colour carpet you go for is going to have a disadvantage, dark carpets show the bits, light carpets show the dirt

Yearofthemum · 13/01/2019 11:44

Absolutely not. It's out.

Do you really need to recarpet before you sell. It’s not necessarily going to add anything to the value of the house.
I’m in the process of completing on a house that will need new carpet straightaway but I wouldn’t have paid extra for it if it had new carpets throughout. Most people don’t buy a house for the decor.

NashvilleQueen · 13/01/2019 11:50

What’s the ‘new’ grey then in neutral terms? I’m looking for stair carpet. Don’t want to offend anyone

gamerwidow · 13/01/2019 11:50

Don’t know about fashion but I’ll be going for a mid neutral as a colour that will go with everything but won’t massively show up either dirt or bits. Boring but practical.

NC4Now · 13/01/2019 11:51

I still think beige is nicer. It’s warmer and goes with everything (even grey!)

ohfourfoxache · 13/01/2019 11:51

So what colour should someone go for?

gamerwidow · 13/01/2019 12:11

Beige/light brown/mink all work as fairly low maintenance neutrals imo

DustyMaiden · 13/01/2019 12:12

I love grey, I’m putting it everywhere. If it is passé someone should tell the carpet shops.

WhirlieGigg · 13/01/2019 12:12

BIL is an interior designer and his whole house is grey, including brand new grey carpets laid in 2018.

WhirlieGigg · 13/01/2019 12:13

There’s a reason that calling something or someone “beige” is an insult!

ShivD · 13/01/2019 12:18

I think a warmer toned grey is nicer than a cooler grey. So a sort of greige! Grin

The cool grey carpets look naff IMO and a bit passé.

twiceinalifetime · 13/01/2019 13:35

Thanks, looks like it's a divided opinion.

Gamer/Starbucks - I do need to replace the carpet in the hall, stairs and landing. The hallway is quite large and has a big impact when you enter the house. It's also quite dark which is why I'm thinking a lighter shade would be better.

ShivD - do you have any examples of a 'greige' please (love the word btw). There are so many varieties that I'm running round in circles.

We just ordered a nice creamy stoney beigey coloured carpet for our stairs and landing. Hated all the grey on display.

Bodicea · 13/01/2019 14:46

If I was going to recapped now I would go for a sort of browny/grey/minky colour.
Not full on grey. But not cream/ beige carpets either.

Bodicea · 13/01/2019 14:47

*recarpet

Pinkstars2501 · 13/01/2019 14:59

We’ve just put new carpets in our bedrooms, charcoal grey. I don’t particularly care if people think it’s out of fashion now. It goes with the colours in the rooms and it won’t get grubby as quickly as a lighter one.

Go with whatever you like I say...

kaytee87 · 13/01/2019 15:27

I just got a taupe carpet that's still neutral but warmer than grey. Seems to go with lots of different colours.

Hiphopopotamous · 13/01/2019 15:30

We've just done our upstairs. Also thought grey might be going out.

We went for a browny/grey/mink/inbetween colour. Goes with all wall colours, have a toddler and it hides all the crumbs and dirt.

Hiphopopotamous · 13/01/2019 15:30

The last poster said "taupe" - I think that might be a better description of the colour!

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 13/01/2019 16:22

If you must recarpet, surely any neutral colour will do. Beige is neutral, grey is neutral.

I like grey and it’s easier to keep looking good than cream or beige.

Kernowgal · 13/01/2019 16:59

I'm just about to start looking for houses and an entirely grey-carpeted house would put me off. Beige/mink much better.

To be honest, I would only change the carpets if the old ones are hideous 70s dazzlers or similar. I had revolting multicoloured carpets throughout so changed to beige - yes it's boring and neutral but it goes with everything. Grey is going out of fashion (thank fuck).

crimsonlake · 13/01/2019 17:01

Why must people follow trends when decorating, be a leader not a follower. Choose what you love, do not let trends dictate.

Bluntness100 · 13/01/2019 17:03

Personally I wouldn't put a grey carpet in, it can limit the colours for the walls and furnishings and suck the light out.

I'd agree with the others, a warm taupe beige creamy coloured one is much better, goes with anything and brightens the space.
