He was only 6 years old. He's been totally fine, no issues, asleep beside me on the sofa as usual. I got up to let him outside before I went to bed and he'd just gone. I can't believe it.

That's horrendous for you, OP. I'm so glad he was snuggled with you.

CardinalCat · 14/01/2019 00:19

I am so sorry about your beautiful boy. I have lost a young dog suddenly before and it truly knocks you. Please look after yourself as you come to terms with the trauma and seek advice from your vet as I'm sure you're keen to find out what happened. Really sad for you Flowers

OldGreyBoots · 14/01/2019 01:28

I'm so, so sorry. No one who's loved an animal, big or small, will think you're being silly - they're the most wonderful family members you could wish for. I'll be thinking of you and your family, and your precious boy.

AllGoodDogs · 14/01/2019 08:06

I'm so sorry for your loss Flowers

We have a 13 yo black lab who is nearing the end. We've seen the vets and know we need to make the decision to let him go soon. My wish for him is that he would go peacefully as your darling boy did... Snuggled at home with those who loved him. I hope you and your family will be able to take some comfort in that, given time.

Lots of love to you all, I hope your DCs are not too distressed xx

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 14/01/2019 08:14

I'm here for you too Flowers

We took our dog to be euthanised late last night. I had to make the final call. He was only 5. DH is devastated and we still expecting to wake up to him this morning. We've lost a member of our family.

I am so sorry, OP. We lost our beloved old boy on Friday and it absolutely broke my heart. There's no pain like it :( Flowers

I'm so, so sorry. My wonderful Jack Russell will be 6 this year and I truly dread the day I wake up and he's not beside me Flowers

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 14/01/2019 09:17

Aww Harry, only just seen your thread, you poor love, it's truly heartbreaking, gutting, losing your darling dog, I'm so sorry for your loss.💐
However, slipping quietly away next to his mum, cuddled up on the sofa, was a final privilege, what a very loved boy he was.
Sending much love to you, and to everyone who has recently lost a pet.
Sleep tight big choccy boy ! 🐾

bilbodog · 14/01/2019 10:45

💐 my thoughts are with you all - it is so hard, i still cry for my special boy who we lost in march last year. He will be in your hearts forever.

BishopBrennansArse · 14/01/2019 10:47

I'm so sorry, OP. But he was cuddled up to you on the sofa feeling safe and happy and just didn't wake up. Please take comfort from that xx

BishopBrennansArse · 14/01/2019 10:48

Also don't and spider I'm so sorry for your losses too x

DontCallMeCharlotte · 14/01/2019 10:50

Apart from that I loved ddog so much. He's a chocolate lab and the most loveable, affectionate dog I've ever known. I know people will think it's silly but he is such a huge part of our lives.

We have a 13 year old Lab and I'm dreading the day...

It's absolutely not silly as dogs are absolutely part of the family (and they are really funny). I'm so sorry for you Sad

Mumofaboyandaspringer · 14/01/2019 12:08

I lost my sweet girl like this. At the time I thought I’d never get over the shock and trauma of her leaving me so suddenly. 2 years on I look back and am grateful that she closed her eyes that final time, by my side in her own bed. Try to take comfort in the life u shared together and the love u lavished on each other. Sending lots of love. X

HarrySnotter · 14/01/2019 17:16

Thank you all so much for your lovely posts. I've barely stopped crying since Saturday night. The DCs are devastated, particularly DS (14), he rarely went anywhere without ddog. I'm actually quite worried about him, he's so heartbroken. We all are I suppose.

So very sorry, OP. It's awful.
We lost our last dog and cat within 6 weeks of each other - both over 14 so to be expected, but that didn't stop it being devastating. The house felt so horribly empty.

One of the worst things, for me, was people saying things like, 'Well, you can always get another,' as if you'd had the telly nicked or something. So heartless and unfeeling.

Nobody understands unless they've been through it with a much loved pet.

BF888 · 14/01/2019 18:56

It really is like losing a family member, don’t under estimate how intense it can feel and please take it easy.

If you 14 year old is finding it difficult he could always speak to blue cross if he felt he needed support. It’s extra hard I think when the passing happens so out of the blue, it’s hard to understand how everything is normal to then not.

A day doesn’t go by where I still don’t get emotional over Belle. I can say that I can now look at pictures and feel joy and can think of her and feel happy about the memories we had.

Movingonup41 · 14/01/2019 19:02

Sorry for your loss OP. We lost our beautiful German Shepherd in May last year at the age of 12. It was totally unexpected and we were all devastated.

I still think of her every day and have her picture in our living room. She was our angel.

Big hugs xx

labazsisgoingmad · 14/01/2019 19:04

what an awful shock sending much love and hugs to you xx

SanJelliChino · 14/01/2019 19:08

Poor you and your poor ds op Flowers. I'm very sorry for your lost.

I know it doesn't help now, but try and take comfort that you have given him a lovely life and he died close to you as part of the family which is what a dog loves best.
