A&E for ds(16) Have we done the right thing?

DS very suddenly started vomiting this afternoon and has been sick multiple times. He is never ill. We took his temp and it was 34 .9. Even with many blankets it wouldn't get above 35.5. He also had a racing pulse. Never seen him so ill. 111 recommended A &E. He is there now with DH sitting waiting and puking. They haven't even been triaged. I'm beginning to feel like we should have waited at home a bit longer. DH says he just wants to come home. So worried.

No you have done the right thing. He sounds a unwell child and is in the right place - doctor here ....

RhubarbFizz · 12/01/2019 23:22

Hope you get a positive update soon. As he is ill and recommended to go to A&E it sounds like it is worth staying there.

Redshoeblueshoe · 12/01/2019 23:24

It's much better that you are there now, than being at home and for DS to decline rapidly.

LittleMe03 · 12/01/2019 23:24

No, you've done the right thing OP. Saturday night A&E are no doubt really busy but hopefully he will be seen soon Thanks

ipswichwitch · 12/01/2019 23:24

If 111 have recommended a&e then that’s the best place for him. Might take a while since it’s a Saturday night.

Walnutwhipster · 12/01/2019 23:24

I've had sepsis and he's hitting enough red flags to absolutely think you've done the right thing.

babysharkah · 12/01/2019 23:24

Better for him to be there than go down rapidly at home. Hope he's ok.

thaegumathteth · 12/01/2019 23:25

Absolutely it could be sepsis but hopefully isnt. If I were you I’d want it made sure they’d bebtriaged ASAP.

MrsEricBana · 12/01/2019 23:25

Oh you've definitely done the right thing. Hope he's better very soon.

Whatisthisworldcomingtoo · 12/01/2019 23:27

He is in best place, waiting for news will be hard! Hopefully he is triaged soon!

ChariotsofFish · 12/01/2019 23:27

That must be very scary. You’ve definitely done the right thing.

lljkk · 12/01/2019 23:29

Are you sure U took his temperature correctly?

Please let us know what happens. Hope he's a lot better soon.

MamaLovesMango · 12/01/2019 23:30

Absolutely the right thing

Hezz · 12/01/2019 23:33

Hope he's seen soon, you did the right thing

VimFuego101 · 12/01/2019 23:37

He's 16, I imagine you've seen him through enough 'normal' bugs and sickness to recognize something more serious. The temperature sounds concerning, I hope he's ok Thanks

ScottishG · 12/01/2019 23:44

He has been triaged. Temp up to 37.4, SATS and BP normal but pulse 134. He is back in the waiting area. Apparently he will have bloods, fluids and a blood test. I presume bloods are looking for infection? I have a bit of medical knowledge (ex-hcp) which I don't think is helping my worrying.

ScottishG · 12/01/2019 23:46

Sorry, I said bloods twice. I meant anti sickness mess

OP posts:
ScottishG · 12/01/2019 23:47

Meds not mess. Seem to have lost the ability to type!

Okay, what will be worrying them (I suspect) is that he has a high heart rate. If he had a fever, that could cause it. But 37.4 doesn't count, and certainly wouldn't send it up that high in a 16 year old. Dehydration can do it, but I'd be very surprised if a teenager got that dehydrated that fast. So the thing they have to not miss is infection. I've known chest infections present like this, but suspect what they're really wanting to make sure they don't miss is appendicitis.

Sounds like they're doing the right stuff. Try to hang on in there.

thaegumathteth · 12/01/2019 23:53

Ok great thank his temperature is better and he has a treatment plan.

Haggisfish · 12/01/2019 23:57

Poor you and ds. Hope he’s ok.

Quartz2208 · 12/01/2019 23:57

Definitely the right thing

HazelBite · 13/01/2019 00:00

Never underestimate these sort of symptons, I have had 2 Ds's seriously ill after high temp and vomiting, ending up with stays in hospital.
There are all sorts of weird conditions that teens and young adults can go down with, it is something that it is not a good idea to ignore.

SophieLouise93 · 13/01/2019 00:01

You've definitely done the right thing, never second guess yourself when it comes to your children, your their mum! My DD wash rushed to a&e by ambulance on boxing day because she wasn't eating or drinking, her pulse was 180+ and her temp 39.8, I thought it was very serious, turns out she had tonsullitus, when I found this out my first thought was we could've just took her to the doctors and not wasted the ambulance or a&he's time, but now I think he'll no, when it comes to my child being ill I will do what's best for her

GlitteryFluff · 13/01/2019 00:02

Hope it's nothing serious. Thanks
