A&E for ds(16) Have we done the right thing?

DS very suddenly started vomiting this afternoon and has been sick multiple times. He is never ill. We took his temp and it was 34 .9. Even with many blankets it wouldn't get above 35.5. He also had a racing pulse. Never seen him so ill. 111 recommended A &E. He is there now with DH sitting waiting and puking. They haven't even been triaged. I'm beginning to feel like we should have waited at home a bit longer. DH says he just wants to come home. So worried.

Definitely right decision, sounds like they're going to check out all potential options

LittleMe03 · 13/01/2019 00:21

Hope he is ok OP and feeling better soon x

He's in a sideroom now waiting for fluids. Doc thinks he has a bug. Strange that there's no diarrhoea as the two usually come together with a tummy bug.

Thanks everyone for your support. It was horrible to see my 6 ft healthy as an ox son become so unwell so quickly

Aw, I hope he is soon better. My son had a vomiting bug with no diarrhoea a couple of years ago and it really took it out of him - however it didn't last long.
You certainly did the right thing taking him to A&E.

Hmmm. But how has he dehydrated that much if he doesnt have the trots? Vomiting can dry you out, but takes a few days to dehydrate you, he has also clearly not been sweating. If he has been vomiting for less than 6 hrs, I would keep pushing on the why. Infection, virus, has he taken any drugs, smoked anything.... Fluids are a good idea generally, but are not treatment and can be used to patch someone together so thy feel well enough to be sent home without a real diagnosis.. Ask is this ideopathic (doctor speak for we dont know)

They might not be able to work it out tonight, but its better if you know you are going home with an undiagnosed but stable child rather than thinking he is fine.

Ask if he has had bloods to check thyroid. DD had vomiting and a fast pulse and was told to take sips of fluids for a bug... turned out it was a thyroid storm

ScottishG · 13/01/2019 01:19

He's been sent back to waiting room. No sign of any fluids yet. He must be feeling dreadful.

How’s he doing now op?

WWYDhelpplease · 13/01/2019 08:52

How is he? Hope all ok and he’s home and sleeping.

ScottishG · 13/01/2019 09:31

Released about 4am after fluids and anti sickness and when his pulse was a bit lower. He's sleeping now. He had played hockey a couple of hours before it started so I wonder whether he was a bit dehydrated already. Will be keeping a very close eye on him today.

Did he have IV fluids?

ScottishG · 13/01/2019 12:21

Yes he had a litre of IV fluids and IV anti sickness meds. DH said this perked him up very quickly. No more vomiting since. He is currently watching sport on the sofa sipping water and eating rich tea biscuits so hopefully over the worst. I was astonished at how quickly he became so poorly. He is very slender so not much in reserve maybe. He is gutted to be missing school tomorrow as he is in y11 and this will be his first day off school sick since he joined in year 7. He wont be 48 hours clear of sickness and I want him to have a proper rest so its tough!

Glad he's on the mend. It's amazing what IV fluids can do. I've had them a couple of times and my toddler has too and in all cases we bounced back very quickly from our various ailments. First time I had them was during a particularly nasty bought of mastitis when I was at the point of delirium and they were worried about sepsis. After fluids I felt like a new woman and (totally too much info here but what the heck) both boobs instantly started gushing breast milk like a waterfall! 😄
