Because the first episode is absolutely shit...

Ending was a bit crap but it got better as it went along.

I did miss the hidden extras - didn't notice a thing Blush

NoTeaForMe · 14/01/2019 18:42

I really enjoyed it and liked the ending. I thought it had an unnerving feel to it and a few bits that really made me jump, and my husband too and he’s no wimp! @ShowOfHands now I’m wondering if I’ve kissed something - what did you get from the ending?!

ShowOfHands · 14/01/2019 20:15

I don't want to spoil it for the op. Notice anything about this picture?

Loved it all, thought it was brilliant

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 14/01/2019 20:22

Oh please don’t worry about spoiling it for me! I watched the second episode, thought it dire and vowed not to continue to watch it!

ShowOfHands yeah! Read the orignal ending was meant to confirm all that but they changed their mind.

MissingGeorgeMichael · 15/01/2019 07:00

@ShowOfHands

I know it's early but I can't see anything odd about the picture apart from the 2 on the cake Blush

retainertrainer · 15/01/2019 07:33

I quite enjoyed it. My problem with it was that all of the characters were arse holes. The only one I was invested in died pretty sharpish and I thought some of the acting from ‘Steve’ was dire.

horrayforharoldlloyd · 15/01/2019 07:36

I think the siblings characters were each meant to symbolise the different stages of grief @NoTeaForMe

PrettyPurpleDress2 · 15/01/2019 07:44

Yes I really liked it!!

NoTeaForMe · 15/01/2019 08:04

I don’t see anything. The 2 on the cake I took to mean Luke had been clean for 2 years, and an easy way of showing us how much time he passed. Steve and wife obviously worked things out and maybe used a donor or had his vasectomy reversed as she’s pregnant. I’ve just done a quick google too and nothing comes up about that picture.. what am I missing? ConfusedConfused

Fairylea · 15/01/2019 08:06

We gave up with it. Bored to death!

ShatnersWig · 15/01/2019 08:15

There was a thread on this when it was new. I'll repeat what I said there.

It says "based on the novel by Shirley Jackson". That's laughable. Aside from the name of the house and two character names, absolutely NOTHING else comes from the book. Which is excellent. Watch the 1963 film The Haunting to see what it SHOULD have been (but not the 90s remake with Liam Neeson which is shit).

Putting that aside...

It's shit.

ShowOfHands · 15/01/2019 10:48

Every time anybody is in the red room and falsely believing something good is happening, the colours are muted with one stand out unnaturally red item. See Luke's red trainers in the hotel room with the junkie for example. The door during the tea party for another. Odd bits of furniture. I'll attach another picture... that's the "game room". Muted tones with a bright red incidental object.

I saw the final scene the same way. Bright red cake and an implausible ending where everybody gets exactly what they wanted? Nah.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 15/01/2019 11:56

No. The last episode was dire. Just loads of boring pointless monologues.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 15/01/2019 11:59

And I also found it a huge struggle to remember who was who as they all had the same hair.

Thanks for the explanation

NoTeaForMe · 15/01/2019 15:04

Oh! @ShowOfHands ! I see what you mean, I guess I just felt the whole program was pretty muted so didn’t notice too much but yes, you’re right, that cake stands out. I wouldn’t say that everyone got what they wanted in the end though? Their mother still committed suicide when they were children and then their sister and dad did too. Now they just know the truth behind it and cn steer clear. I read an interview from the director (I think, maybe producer) and he said that although he feels there’s more stories to be told they won’t include that family again as he feels they’ve been through enough and their story is all wrapped up and done. The house has more though, whether that’s a prequel or a sequel it doesn’t matter.

I really liked the Liam Neeson version Blush

MrsWicket · 15/01/2019 21:42

I persevered (DH bailed after episode one). Ending wasn’t very good but I loved individual episodes. The Bent-Necked Lady episode was fab

WhoWants2Know · 16/01/2019 18:14

I did enjoy the revelation of who the bent necked lady was.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 16/01/2019 18:19

I liked it a lot but if you don’t, then just don’t bother.

My mind boggles at the hyperbolic reviews coming out of America though - apparently people passing out and throwing up all over the shop Confused

MissingGeorgeMichael · 17/01/2019 07:03

I did enjoy the revelation of who the bent necked lady was.

I confess I did start to suspect who it was after a few episodes.

One of the best was when the older brother found Nell in his flat.

dustarr73 · 17/01/2019 08:15

The Haunting[1963]is really good. But this i just cant get in to it.Im on episode 7 and im only watching cause i wont let it best meGrin.

But for teh name of it,there should be more action in the house, not everybody waffling bit crap.

Adversecamber22 · 17/01/2019 08:58

The bent neck lady revelation was it’s saving grace and there is one for me anyway really good jump scene. It could have been so much better though.

On a note to horror fans and it’s not perfect at all but made for some non strenuous watching Netflix has a film called ghost stories on currently its only just over an hour and a half long. Features Martin Freeman and Paul Whitehouse. Worth a look just for a couple of things in the film, a great bit of cinematography and the other a OMG moment.
