WTF things you used to do and wonder how you're still alive....

I've just been reading the thread about people not being able to do simple jobs around the home e.g, changing a bulb/plug, and it got me thinking about when I was around 7-8 years old, not only being fully competent and able to rewire an electrical plug, but also jamming into the electric sockets wires from the video player in my bedroom that didn't have a plug (blue wire into left bottom wall socket hole, brown wire into right bottom wall socket hole) and the tv plug kind of wedging them in over the top after seeing my DF doing the same thing with other small electricals.

WTF did I do this? I thought at the time it was probably ok as DF did the same when a plug was missing, but part of me knew deep down it was wrong! TBF DF did go full on gobshite tell me off when he noticed, and unplugged them, muttering he would 'get me a plug', but then forgot, so I never received said plug, so just jammed the wires in again. I would go barmy if my dc did this, and am cringing now at nearly frying myself and thinking I could have caused a house fire too, (to be fair, this was early 80s, so slack on health and safety).

Please tell me I'm not the only knob to have done something so stupid, I've only just thought of this for the first time in decades and feel so daft. How did I not see what I could have done? Blush

Went fishing (weekly!) in a small dam behind my parents’ house that had two resident crocs.
Rode pillion with no helmet on my boyfriends motorbike all over town, our parents were just too happy that they didn’t have to ferry us around!
House parties at who evers parents were away that weekend, no drugs but we drank a lot as teenagers.

halfwitpicker · 11/01/2019 12:57

Fuck me some of these are wild!

Mine are more to do with sex than drugs and alcohol.

Blow job to Spanish electrician whilst on hol with my parents aged 14.
Had various 'boyfriends' starting from age around 14 who were married/in their 30's, 40's.
Hol aged 17 with mates, slept with about 6 different blokes. One of which was a 3 some.

Thank god all this was before the Internet and was in the 90’s.

Dusty that is quite frankly appalling and you need to leave this thread and take your dreadful lifestyle choices with you Grin

Bandyknock · 11/01/2019 14:30

Regularly went shooting with the boys from the farm across the road. We shot rats mostly and a few pidgeons. Our parents all knew, and it was ok because they were sensible...both had 12 bore shot guns, but cos I was only 9, I had an air pistol. They were 13 and 14.

Actually thinking about it, we WERE very safety conscious as it had been drummed into us about handling guns. The thought of my child now, striding off for miles, uncontactable wirh the shot gun broke over his arm, is utterly ridiculous.

PhilipSteak · 11/01/2019 14:45

siton see I want to do that, it sounds great fun I’m just too old & knackered.
emile that is hilarious - do you have her number? 😉 Are you good at DIY now? X

AnnAbbieLian · 11/01/2019 14:48

Wander the streets of cities far away from my home town all night by myself as a 15-18 year old girl after a concert. Go home with random people met at said concerts (not in a one night stand kind of way, just in a meeting random people and hanging out with them kind of way).

I'd never do something like that now.

I actually once did get in a very dangerous situation when I went without a coat and it was raining and I got in the car of some men despite my alarm bells ringing because I wanted to get out of the wet. I escaped before anything happened but it was a very very close call.

Livpool · 11/01/2019 14:50

Slide down the stairs on a pillow inside a shiny sleeping bag 🙈

Livpool · 11/01/2019 14:51

Oh yes and drinking too much and having no idea what I had been up to or how I got home

Bedheadretention · 11/01/2019 15:45

I can't believe what some of you got up to when you were younger....I remember my DF telling me once that he would kill me if I got up to the things he used to do years ago when he was younger and stupid.
I've no idea what these 'things' were but I bet it wasn't a patch on most of you lot Grin

@Livpool Yeah that's my kind of thing......but did you try it head first on your back Wink Grin

Do all you lovely people scrutinise your own DC's behaviour now because of what you did in your youth?

Me and my brother used to:

Climb out of our back bedroom window onto the glass roof of our conservatory and run around on it.

I used to eat all the plants in the garden (because mum had a green house I assumed everything is edible)

I used to chuck a load of clothes and blanket out our front bedroom window and jump out of it on to the concrete path that was very narrow, it was the path to out garden and it had wall along it maybe 4ft high.. I can't believe we never hit the wall on the way down!

My kids are too little so far but I do hope they don't inherit my need to "find out for myself" that bad things are bad.

over50andfab · 11/01/2019 15:55

I worry that DD2 has caught my travel bug but the place she wants to visit in more detail is S America (She spent over 6 months there last year learning Spanish as part of yr 3 at uni). She has assured me she’ll stay away from Venezuela Hmm

BillywigSting · 11/01/2019 16:01

Merrily skipping over the freight train tracks at the bottom of my nanas garden to go and play in the no man's land on the other side. Complete with foxes and the remnants of the local junkies evening excursions.

Both sets of parents and our grandparents did go absolutely loco when they found out though (and deservedly so really)

pineapplebryanbrown · 11/01/2019 16:13

Getting insanely drunk for many years and loads of ONS - unprotected obvs. Drunk sea swimming, hitchhiking. I was a nightmare and absolutely wild. Don't drink at all now!

pineapplebryanbrown · 11/01/2019 16:17

One benefit of having been insanely wild is that I'm unshockable. I could deal with anything re the DC - stds, pg, anything.

Gumbo · 11/01/2019 16:19

As a teen doing door-to-door sales. Alone. At night. In ghettos in a country famous for violent crime and murders. I got shot at several times... Strangely, I look back at that job fondly Hmm

SuziQ10 · 11/01/2019 16:46

At 14 going on the train to meet a boy I didn't know who I'd spoken to for a while on MSN messenger ... could have been disastrous. Luckily it was a boy of similar age & nothing happened.

tierraJ · 11/01/2019 16:52

I'm glad that camera phones didn't exist in the 90s.

But I remember one nasty rich lad who got himself one of the first digital cameras.
I got drunk at a party because I was bored & had so much vodka I ended up having a seizure (I have epilepsy).
Nasty rich lad said he'd taken photos with his digital camera to put online. I never found out if he actually did that as I wasn't online until 2 or 3 years after that incident.

Greenglassteacup · 11/01/2019 17:00

Teenager in the 1980’s in Liverpool.

Regularly walked home from city centre at 3am at weekend on my own

Never wore a coat for a night out, even in the depths of winter

Took lots of recreational drugs

Regularly got ridiculously pissed ( one time someone stole my suede waistcoat off my body in a nightclub cloakroom)

Hitch hiking all over the place for gigs ( although this was with a boyfriend)

Waiting at bus stop for the last bus home, near boyfriend’s house in v dodgy area ( boyfriend was a twat and never waited with me)

Mindsweeping ( stealing drinks from the ledge around the edge of the dance floor in club)

Going off with men I didn’t know

Begging in the city centre on Saturday afternoons to fund nightlife

Greenglassteacup · 11/01/2019 17:01

Good times!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 11/01/2019 17:08

One of mine is really quite crazy. The other three are moderately crazy.

Since she was a little girl, DD1 was always the first in any group to do a physical challenge, e.g. Jump off a cliff into a freezing mountain stream in the lakes while everyone else was thinking about it.

And she was a bit of a nightmare naughty teen and I very much had her number, e.g. At 13 or 14 friend's mum brought them all home from a local free festival because she'd "had too much sun". Er no, she has had too much to drink. Similarly at 14 found some Rizzlas and tobacco in her room and she tried to convince be they were just for roll ups. Sweetie I know what weed smells like.

As a older teen/adult, I'm pretty sure she's dabbled a lot with drugs, probably less so with random men as she is a serial monogamist: always got some moonstruck boy hanging onto her arm. She's travelled a lot on her own though. She's quite fearless and squeezes every last drop of fun out of her life.

Me and DH call her Little Tink Adrenaline Junkie and our catch phrase about her is, "She's up, she's down, she's back up again".

She is absolutely lovely, probably ADD, and very wearing. Worst thing is, DH says she's just like me.

itssquidstella · 11/01/2019 17:09

Walking home barefoot after nights out past the dodgiest park in the town.

Once I was so drunk I got lost on the two minute walk between my friend's house and mine, and ended up wandering round a (different) park where a woman had been raped the previous week.

IRememberSoIDo · 11/01/2019 17:10

Used to use a lilo we got on holidays to slide downstairs when my parents were out. One day my sister and I decided to go on it together and my feet went through the plasterboard of the wall facing the stairs. We saw no danger in this or anything really 🙄

Oblomov19 · 11/01/2019 17:18

Goodness. I've done most of these. Blush struggling to find which of them I haven't!!
