If someone said that you were “from good stock” what would that mean to you?

How would you interpret it if someone said that you were from “good stock”.

It wasn’t said directly, but rather to a friend who passed it on to me. I met said person at a dinner party, and he is said to have told my friend that he “could tell I was from good stock”

What does he know of you? I can think of people who would say that sort of thing in jest meaning they like your family or like what they've heard about them. E.g. musician on hearing your parents played in a band, feminist on hearing your grandmother was a suffragette. Snob on hearing your aunt is a duchess or thinking you talk posh ;)

Nettletheelf · 08/01/2019 21:54

It means that a posh Hugo fancies you and thinks you would be a fine chatelaine of his farmhouse.

springtimeyet · 08/01/2019 21:57

I thought of farming first, it meant solid, hardworking, capable where I grew up. Also if you were a girl likely to be capable of reproducing mini farmers based on parental output.

Wordthe · 08/01/2019 22:00

It means you can be considered an asset rather than a liability

BartonHollow · 08/01/2019 22:02

Arsehole and a snob

Neverunderfed · 08/01/2019 22:03

Good genes

TheRealJoseph · 08/01/2019 22:05

The person means that he has cannibalised an ancestor of yours and boiled the bones down to make stock for the next meal. Wink

as others i'd consider it a compliment, along with comments like good bone structure.

A few years ago I started dating a guy and his mum knew my mum slightly. His mum asked me "so your mum must be happy knowing x is from good stock?"
It's just like saying coming from a "good" family whatever that means.

PolkaDoting · 08/01/2019 22:40

Surely you know what it means, why do you need to ask? Confused

2littleguineas · 08/01/2019 22:44

I'm a farmers daughter, not posh or anywhere near it, very small farm.
It would mean, you're from a lovely family, the kind who would help people out, be dependable and not do others a bad turn.

MarthasGinYard · 08/01/2019 22:47

Oh it's you Op from the 'posh accent' thread yesterday....

jessstan2 · 08/01/2019 22:48

Strong healthy, classy, accomplished and devastatingly good looking ;).

Efferlunt · 08/01/2019 22:53

It’s been said of my sister and I (we are from a farming community) it means we’ve got hands like shovels, childbearing hips and the ability to carry a live pig under each arm.

Effic · 08/01/2019 22:56

polka
As there are already many different interpretations on this thread, clearly there isn’t just one answer.
I’ve been we heard it used in reference to posh/rich/money. In fact, it’s jind of the opposite where I’m from - it means a ‘normal’ family with a long standing, positive reputation in their community.

Yulebealrite · 08/01/2019 22:58

I can see why people can interpret it as a class comment but I suspect that anyone actually daring to use it would use it in reference to good, healthy genes. Most people wouldn't choose to be rude and it's not rude in the gene context.

IhateBoswell · 08/01/2019 23:08

Strong and healthy, with longevity of age in the family.

PortiaCastis · 08/01/2019 23:11

You look like your maiden aunt who is a good sort

PicassoWouldBeProud · 08/01/2019 23:31

It means a good family (good jobs and principles, upstanding members of the community) and probably quite healthy and robust looking. Probably also a bit posh.
