If someone said that you were “from good stock” what would that mean to you?

How would you interpret it if someone said that you were from “good stock”.

It wasn’t said directly, but rather to a friend who passed it on to me. I met said person at a dinner party, and he is said to have told my friend that he “could tell I was from good stock”

A man who would say that enjoys being spanked and can't locate the clitoris

From a good family whose bloodline could be traced haha ie they could tell that there are no nefarious characters in your bloodline. It's a compliment and one I've had before. I am the nefarious character however.

Whatabloodymessthisis · 08/01/2019 21:16

Doesn’t need to mean posh. All depends who said it I feel.

An example could be said by an ageing dairy farmer who knew her grandfather and he farmed well and was a good man.

AfterSchoolWorry · 08/01/2019 21:17

You have thick blonde hair, horsey teeth and wear loafers and quilted jackets? Confused

Jorgezaunders · 08/01/2019 21:19

That I was a sow kept for breeding purposes, or possibly an apple tree.

zukman · 08/01/2019 21:19

More fool himGrin Lest he find my great grandfather was a communist Wink

You’ve got to go at least 200 years back to find any aristos

And my father tells me that I come from good stock if I manage to battle any illness/adversary in my life. He takes it as a compliment to himself for producing me lol. He is a farmer though where the bloodline of animals he purchases is of prime importance. I have been compared to cows. In his head, it was a compliment. Given my good bloodline, I nod and agree.

Bowchicawowow · 08/01/2019 21:25

Farmers are usually posh.

Scrowy · 08/01/2019 21:29

Not sure what type of farmers you hang out with bow but none of the ones I hang out with are posh.

If they are posh they ain't proper farmers.

Bowchicawowow · 08/01/2019 21:30

I don’t hang out with any farmers at all but they all seem posh to me.

HighwayDragon1 · 08/01/2019 21:32

Middle class

PloddingOnwards · 08/01/2019 21:32

I don't perceive that comment to be racist.

To me it means your genes are great.

madmum5811 · 08/01/2019 21:34

Havent heard this for a long time. Always understood it to mean healthy strong. Historically farmers families were healthier, access to food, fresh air living etc.

HoldMeCloserTonyDanza · 08/01/2019 21:36

Real farmers are generally not posh but some very posh people describe themselves as farmers (usually, but not always, sincerely).

My FIL was listed as a “farmer” on our wedding certificate and I know his side considered it “posh points” scored against my family (who are even posher than them, but foreign, so obviously don’t get it and never will).

Wotev · 08/01/2019 21:38

The simple translation is that you come from a 'good family'. It's not that difficult to understand.

Bowchicawowow · 08/01/2019 21:38

The ones on Countryfile always seem posh to me. They own land and live in big houses. That pretty much defines posh for me (a pleb).

lboogy · 08/01/2019 21:38

Could mean they like your physical appearance. I've heard men say it about women's bodies

Scrowy · 08/01/2019 21:39

bow There's a good programme called This Farming Life, you can get it on iPlayer.

Given you don't actually know any farmers you could always check it out to see if your judgement holds water. It's considered by the farming community to be a fairly good representation of modern British farming.

Bowchicawowow · 08/01/2019 21:40

Thanks for the recommendation but it’s probably not my cup of tea.

Dothehappydance · 08/01/2019 21:43

From a good family.
Not necessarily posh or anything, but a good / nice family background.

This is how I would take it too, just a good, honest background, but like a pp mentioned also in reference to genes and health.

Scrowy · 08/01/2019 21:44

I own land and live in a big house. The small amount of land I own is inherited through many generations of (poor) farmers, and is largely still being paid off. The rest of the farm (and large farmhouse) is tenanted by us on a long term basis but owned by genuine posh people.

They own many farms, but they are not farmers.

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 08/01/2019 21:45

Round here it's usually the phrase "good farming stock" meaning their families have ran farms for generations.

derxa · 08/01/2019 21:46

It would be considered one of the highest compliments in the farming community. Totally this

derxa · 08/01/2019 21:51

It means we know your family generations back. We know you're not shysters. It could also mean you're as strong as an ox and could handle anything.

Wordthe · 08/01/2019 21:52

I would think good health strong constitution strong immune system etc
