Has anyone else noticed the days are becoming ever so slightly longer ?

I know we're less than three weeks beyond the solstice but it certainly seemed a little lighter late yesterday afternoon (after the rain cleared) and also today. Admittedly, it was still quite dark in West Yorkshire until about 9 yesterday morning but there was also a lot of lowish cloud.

Joy !

Um, yes, because that's the way it works Grin

Ta1kinPeace · 08/01/2019 16:18

happens most years

MyHairyToe · 08/01/2019 16:19

Yes, me too! At last!
Ignore the miseries OP!

Mousewithascarf · 08/01/2019 16:22

Yes. It’s great. It always feels like you’re over the worst somehow, although that’s rubbish because there are still about 3 months of winter to go.

GnothiSeafton · 08/01/2019 16:24

I wasn't being a misery!! I'm no expert on these things, but there's generally a minute - or two minutes - on either end of the day, sunrise and sunset, so it can creep up on you - particularly if you've spent nearly two weeks hunkered down over Christmas and New Year generally ignoring your 'normal' get-up and go-to-bed times!

twilightcafe · 08/01/2019 16:28

My colleagues laugh at me for saying this. But I can see the days are getting longer.

You are not alone!

CatnissEverdene · 08/01/2019 16:30

Yes, we're in Gloucestershire and I've just walked the dogs. It's a good half an hour extra of daylight here, which is lovely.

JazzyJelly · 08/01/2019 16:30

Yes! It might get colder but at least it's something.

IndigoSpritz · 08/01/2019 16:32

It gives a glimmer of hope for brighter skies to come, even though January and, especially, February, are the coldest months.

Abject apologies to those people who complain about sunshine and hot weather. I know you're out there !

Yes! Every Tuesday I do a school pick up, go to library then go out to get the other child from the bus. This week I commented how much lighter it was at 4.10. It went dark pretty quick but it was really noticeable

BigSandyBalls2015 · 08/01/2019 16:38

I’ve just said the same thing to DD, hasn’t noticed before today .... been very sunny and bright though so prob helps

HandsOffMyRights · 08/01/2019 16:43

Yes. It makes a difference as my son gets off his bus from school around 4.20 and has to cross a very busy road.

Today it was still light when he got off, whereas before Christmas it wasn't.

I confess to having looked at sunset times (in December) for January - what a saddo!

MacarenaFerreiro · 08/01/2019 16:47

Yes, I've noticed! I hate the dark. Really hate it. November and December are so depressing, that constant slide and it getting darker and darker and darker. In December we had so many of those dull, grey days when it never gets properly light at all.

Today has been glorious - really sunny and chilly. It's 16.47 and there's still light in the sky in Glasgow.

Love it. Roll on Spring and dark winter can fuck right off.

juneau · 08/01/2019 16:48

I did today, because it was sunny and so it was noticeable. Yesterday it was so gloomy it was practically dark by 3pm!

Owlish · 08/01/2019 16:51

Yes! I was thinking the same thing when I was walking the dog an hour ago.

BishopBrennansArse · 08/01/2019 16:53

Yes isn't it lovely?

Bezalelle · 08/01/2019 16:55

It's nice isn't it!

I'm Jewish, and the Sabbath candle lighting times are getting and later on a Friday night.

Sarcelle · 08/01/2019 16:56

Yes, it is definitely lighter, so uplifting and it's only going to get better from now. And the light already feels different in the afternoon. More springlike. But that may be wishful thinking.

SuePerb · 08/01/2019 16:57

Yes, today we walked home from school in the light (first day back).

Spring can't come soon enough for me!

PineapplePen07 · 08/01/2019 16:58

Yes and I love it!

Even looking outside now I can still see patches of light sky.

Perch · 08/01/2019 17:00

Yes to later evenings and I had a snowdrop in flower in my garden on 29 December!

Raglansleeve · 08/01/2019 17:07

Yes, Perch. We're in Scotland and have never had snowdrops flowering in the garden before 3rd week in January - we had them in flower on NYE. Daffs are also noticeably coming through. Have to keep reminding myself we've still got nearly 2 months of winter, and the Beast from the East was at the very tail end of winter last year.

user1471426142 · 08/01/2019 17:09

I noticed it today for the first time. Still pitch black now but a few extra minutes of light made me temporarily happy. Bring on spring!

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 08/01/2019 17:14

I’ve noticed this too. And my snowdrops are just starting to pop through.

There’s even some mad daffodils in bloom they bloom every year in January, I think they are broken Grin

IndigoSpritz · 08/01/2019 17:18

I find it's around the middle of February when the increased daylight is really noticeable. I work twelve hour shifts beginning at 5 a.m. It's always a good sign when its proper daylight at 8 a.m. and still quite light at 5 p.m., even if it's not particularly warm !
