My baby is 8 months old and I find myself staring at him, thinking 'I GREW that!' I made those tiny fingers and tiny toenails. My human body actually produced another human. It's just amazing when you sit at think about it.

And what's really blown my mind is thinking that I was born with all my eggs, all ready and waiting to go - it's like I carried DS around with me my whole life until one day that particular egg desended and it met that 1 particular sperm which made DS. If it had been any of the other eggs, I could have a completely different baby!

Women's bodies are amazing.

Please share your own equally pointless but also mind bending ponderings.

There's 26 letters. (I know there are other letters in other cultures). And those 26 letters manage to make so many different words. And those words have been put together in different orders to make thousands, millions, of books and stories and they're all different. From 26 squiggles.

Also, keys. We've been using lock and key since medieval times (possibly before?) and even though things have been tweaked a bit. We're still, even with all our technology, using essentially the same thing. And the concept is pretty boggling really.

I’ve often wondered when you lose weight, where does it go? It can’t evaporate can it ? Does it?

Fat is a hydrocarbon chain thus containing hydrogen and carbon. When your fat 'breaks down' fat turns back into gas and the majority you breath it out. In ketosis your breath smells which is a sign.

Endofmyshortfuse · 08/01/2019 20:49

Thank you @ Marcie Blueblle - I never knew that! I shall be smelling my breath obsessively now in the hope that I can smell the fat leaching away 😂😂

GallicosCats · 08/01/2019 20:53

Why am I me and not someone else in a totally different time or place? If I was someone else would I still feel like me? And (when I'm drifting off to sleep or have had strong opiates) who is this 'me' person anyway?

paulstearne · 08/01/2019 20:53

Is there anything worse than washing sieves?

Mrsemcgregor · 08/01/2019 20:54

Eggs - I expect early people saw animals (rodents, foxes etc) eating eggs and as they were probably very hungry, decided to have a nibble.

Glass - when lightning strikes sand it makes glass. It probably didn’t take much of a leap to try heating sand.

I want to know how microwaves work. I know it’s something to do with radiation but how?!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 08/01/2019 21:08

Are modern day mountaineers and explorers born with an urge to do extreme stuff like that? Because a lot of it has already been done now, surely, so their determination is only for themselves..if they had been born a thousand years ago maybe they would have been the person who discoveeed a new place for humans to live, something really worthwhile to the human race. Whereas now, they’re just a kind of extreme tourist, aren’t they, really? Their slightly nutty natures are wasted!

Similarly, who first had the idea to devise a way to be able to explore deep under the sea? What could they possibly think could be worth risking their life for down there? Confused.

Who first thought, “I could catch a wild horse, break it in and sit on its back and make it do what I want”? Why didn’t they pick a different animal? Suppose they must have tried and for some reason a horse didn’t mind it quite so much as the others? Grin

Why do salmon and other fish and animals have to have their offspring in the same place as the previous generation?? And how do they know where they have to go?? If humans have ruined that spot, do any of them ever think “sod this for a game of soldier, this is a stupid place to lay my eggs these days, I’m off to find somewhere different!”

Strokethefurrywall · 08/01/2019 21:13

This makes my brain hurt...

Greenandcabbagelooking · 08/01/2019 21:13

We all agree post boxes are red, but how do we know that looks the same to everyone?

Strokethefurrywall · 08/01/2019 21:14

When your fat 'breaks down' fat turns back into gas and the majority you breath it out. In ketosis your breath smells which is a sign.

Except for me who farts it out. Constantly it seems...

purplegoat · 08/01/2019 21:21

Curlyhairedassassin re: the salmon, and if they always return to where they were born, how come there's salmon in so many different rivers?

Florries · 08/01/2019 21:28

Yes Greenandcabbagelooking

What if my concept of blue Is actually the colour red. So when you say 'look at that red postbox'. I see red but actually I'm seeing the colour blue but I have been taught that the colour blue is called 'red'

Before they invented those spotty, coloured, number cards, how would you know if someone was colourblind?

Mine is engineering. Amazing how aeroplanes stay in the air and how rockets can get to the moon. Also London Underground amazes me. How it's crazy there is a whole network of streets above all these traveling commenters

Florries · 08/01/2019 21:31

What if we are all in 'The Truman Show' and this is all one big experiment.

I’m also curious about vaccinations. Like what are they made of?

I can't believe there are people who don't understand vaccines.

MarcieBluebell · 08/01/2019 21:38

Except for me who farts it out. Constantly it seems...

Ar yes you can fart and sweat it out a bit too. I have googled in the past, 'calories in a fart'. It's minimal but every little helps...

MarcieBluebell · 08/01/2019 21:40

What's weird is that there is a place with all the most dangerous viruses on lock down. If that was opened to someone evil what would happen.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 08/01/2019 21:40

@purplegoat: birds drop ‘em. It’s why you can get fish in tarns.

But, the first salmon that was dropped in a different river, once it had got some friends in the same situation, how did they decide where exactly to all go to spawn? Were they all worried that it wasn’t where they knew they were supposed to go?!

birds flying in formation to travel thousands of miles. It’s fascinating to me. They take it turns to the the few at the front, I think. but what if the ones following disagree with the leader about the direction or do they just NEVER get it wrong?

CurlyhairedAssassin · 08/01/2019 21:48

If you’ve grown up in eg the Mongolian desert as part of The same tribe that has existed for yonks, would you NEVER be any good at learning a skill like, say, computers, or train driving, or tennis. Or can anyone be trained to excel in an area they not only have not grown up with but never even knew existed.

I always wonder whether someone who lived in a rainforest their whole life might have an innate talent for eg trampolining and just never get to know they were good at it!

macaroniandpizza · 08/01/2019 21:51

This is a mind boggling one specific to me lol. Why is it at night time any time ddog wants out for a pee no matter if i wasnt needing before he went out i was needing a pee when he came back in 😂

CurlyhairedAssassin · 08/01/2019 21:54

Cold night air makes you want to go? innate urge to empty your bladder when your body thinks it’s outside so you don’t dirty your inside living quarters?

You were a dog in a past life? Grin

Betty777 · 08/01/2019 21:57

the names for colours thing has bothered me my whole life. To this day my mother and brother have very different definitions to me of the line when 'blue' becomes 'green'

My other one is that the sky is blue and transparent all the way up until......suddenly its outer space and that looks black. I understand that logically it's not sudden at all, but I feel somehow that we should still be able to see the black from down here :-)

macaroniandpizza · 08/01/2019 22:01

curlyhairedassasin i think i must of been... it all makes sense now Grin

ChillingWithNickDrake · 08/01/2019 22:07

OP You are blessed to have made something so amazing. I look at my cat the same way 😹

GinZing · 08/01/2019 23:26

Pole vault, at what point did someone decide to launch themselves on a long slightly wobbly pole over another pole high up in the air, also at what point as an athlete do you decide it's the sport for me ?

Yes, like ski jumping.. Imagine the first time you think oh yes I’ll have a go at that. The first time you stand at the top and decide to set off down the ramp.. WTF possesses you?!
