Where to go on holiday with elderly relative and DC?

My Gran is 80 years old and lost my Grandad early last year. She has, understandably, been a bit low over the last few weeks. The bad weather (she loves her garden) and christmas haven't helped. DH and I would really like to take her away somewhere for a few days this summer as we think she needs something to look forward to and a change of scenery.

We are a bit clueless when it comes to UK holiday destinations as we usually go abroad but this would be too much for DGM. So we need to find somewhere in this country that's suitable for an 80 year old, a 5yo and a baby who will be about 9 months. We want somewhere that isn't remote but isn't too crowded either. We will want to get out and about but don't want to be dragging DGM around noisy theme parks. I'm thinking NT properties, nice parks and gardens, afternoon tea, museums, bit of shopping, that type of thing.

My Gran is mentally very sharp and generally in good health but she does get tired if she does too much walking.

Any suggestions for holiday destinations would be very gratefully received! Thank you Smile

Tenby?

Disfordarkchocolate · 05/01/2019 14:32

Vale of York. Day out in York, North Yorkshire Moors train, Castle Howard, Constable Burton. How far do you want to drive?

Pieceofpurplesky · 05/01/2019 14:34

Tenby would be good as PP. said.
North wales/Anglesey area
Chester/Cheshire

Don't mind a fairly long drive, we can always stop on the way to break the journey up.

Northumberland is nice and a day trip to Lindisfarne may appeal to your gran or Alnwick castle.

Disfordarkchocolate · 05/01/2019 14:39

I agree that Northumberland is a good option. Alnwick Castle and/or Garden, Wallington, Cragside, Gibside (need to think about access though as these can involve some walking), a few nice farm parks, Almouth, Hexham, Kirkley Hall. Loads to do but don't tell anything else.

Scarborough is a nice traditional family resort, with sandy beach for 5 yo, easy walks along seafront, lots of tea and coffee places, and places to visit round about. Or if you prefer to go SE, Broadstairs is similar, also with potential for days or half days out.

Isle of Wight

iloveredwine · 05/01/2019 14:55

where about in the country do you live?

cheesywotnots · 05/01/2019 15:01

Dorset is lovely, Lyme Regis, Dorchester, lots to see wnd do for all ages, look at hotels or apartments that have ground floor rooms.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 05/01/2019 15:04

We're down south but my DGM is in the East Mindlands.

The isle of wight or whitby. Both lovely places.

bigbrightlight · 05/01/2019 15:18

What about a centre Parcs. Not longleat though as it's very hilly. There is the land train so you don't have to cycle, just try to get a cabin near a land train stop. Lots of activities you can do or swimming. Gran might like a swim ? They usually have bowling too. And lots of cafes restaurants.

We did things like ceramics painting with DS who's a preschooler and we took the grandparents.

iloveredwine · 05/01/2019 15:20

Whitby/Scarbourgh or lake district maybe? or would you want to drive up and stay with her and then go to to Scotland?

Paddington23 · 05/01/2019 15:22

Darwin escapes have lots of nice chalet type places. We went to the isle of white they have the steam rail way Osbourne house big estate but they do have a bus that goes round if the walk is to much. Chalets are amazing quality with beach a short walk away plus’s lots to do

Japril · 05/01/2019 15:26

Stratford upon Avon - bus round the Shakespeare properties (Mary Arden’s is very good for kids), MAD museum, the rec has a fab park and you could get the ferry over, day trip to the Cotswolds - train to B’ham to do the science museum, NT - Coughton, Charlecote Park, snowshill are all not far, Compton Verney is an art gallery. Loads to do!

Mum2jenny · 05/01/2019 21:50

Center parcs in Nottingham or Lake District may be an option. I took my dm to the Lake District one and they had a mini bus you could get to take a person in a wheel chair to any location on site. It was really useful.
