What age for no nappy at night?

Qcng · 04/01/2019 20:25

I think we're ready to try nappy free nights, (he makes such a fuss about about wearing them he's basically demanding it).

When is best? He's been potty trained during the day for around a year now.

Hopefully 3 and a half as Ds has just gone to bed without a nappy for the first time Confused

dementedpixie · 04/01/2019 20:27

Does he wake up dry in the morning? There's no correct age tbh, just when they are ready

SoyDora · 04/01/2019 20:28

Is his nappy dry in the mornings? In which case, go for it?
Both mine were dry at night by 2.5 but I didn’t take their night nappies off until they’d had dry nappies in the morning for a week.

My dd was still 2 (just). I was shocked that it was possible, but she never had a wet night.

AlwaysInMotion · 04/01/2019 20:28

You can't train it, and it varies from child to child. It's to do with hormone production that stops the urine being produced at night or something like that. Best tip I've had is to wait until the kid has had five consecutive dry nights and go from there.

Qcng · 04/01/2019 20:29

No he doesn't wake up dry in the morning and he still has a small cup of warm Milk before bedtime.
This is a bad idea I'm sensing...

My youngest has been potty trained and during the night just after her second birthday. As soon as she got the hang of using the potty during the day I stopped using nappies on a night more or less straight away.

Happyandshiney · 04/01/2019 20:30

There’s no age. It depends on the child.

One if my twins was dry at night at the same time as dry during the day.

The other took a 18 months after they were dry during the day to be dry at night.

It’s to do with muscle control. It’s child specific.

Qcng · 04/01/2019 20:30

The thing is, he could just be weeing as soon as he wakes up, I don't really know.

I waited for dry nights for several weeks

wendz86 · 04/01/2019 20:34

Definitely depends on child. My dd1 wasn't dry at night till nearly 4 , a year after potty training. Dd2 was dry at night at just over 2 as soon as she potty trained.

Scotinoz · 04/01/2019 20:36

My eldest was a few months off 4, and my youngest was almost 3. You can 'train' them at night, it just happens.

Wait for the dry nappies.

makingmiracles · 04/01/2019 20:37

I followed oh crap method and did night and day at same time, dry daytime within a week and dry nighttime from day 1, at 2.4yrs

WrithingHomeForChristmas · 04/01/2019 20:38

Whenever they are dry during the day and consistently wake with a dry nappy. One of mine was just turned 2 when that happened, the other nearly 4.

MarchInHappiness · 04/01/2019 20:38

DD was 5, despite all my efforts.

didireallysaythat · 04/01/2019 20:38

DS2 is 8 and still not dry at night. It will happen in time!

blaaake · 04/01/2019 20:39

I waited till they were dry in the morning. Each one was a different age so it's specific to the child.

OnceUponAGiraffe · 04/01/2019 20:39

DS2 is 2 3/4. Independently decided to start wearing big boy pants last week and has had two dry nights already.

His big brother is 6.5 and floods his nappy every night, despite being dry during the day since his third birthday...

llangennith · 04/01/2019 20:41

The hormone that stops humans producing urine at night plays a major role. Lots of children (boys particularly) don't produce this hormone till 9,10 or even when they start puberty. That's why they make and sell lots of night nappies (known as bed pants) for kids up to age 14.
It often runs in families. Two of my DGS (different families) lack this hormone. The 11 year old started taking the hormone in tablet form (one a night) 8 weeks ago and was night-dry in three days. He has to keep taking the tablets. In the summer holidays we'll try him without the tablets and see if his body has started producing the hormone.
Meantime he still has a waterproof mattress protector on his bed as well as a disposable bed mat.
Doesn't address the opening post but it might help some Mumsnetters.

theSnuffster · 04/01/2019 20:41

DS was almost 8, DD had just turned 2- the same time as being dry in the day. We didn't do anything differently either either of them. It's hormonal apparently so can't be trained.

hugoagogo · 04/01/2019 20:43

With both of mine they stopped wearing nappies at night when they wanted too. Dd was 3 and ds about 4 and a half!

LulusMiniEgg · 04/01/2019 20:45

My DS sounds similar to yours, he started taking his nappy off in the night or refusing to put it on at about 3yrs 5months (potty trained at 2yrs 10 months) He’d never had a dry night before that but since taking it off, just wakes up for a wee then goes back to bed or holds it all night. We’ve had a few accidents but not many and mostly just dribbled so a change of pj bottoms rather than full bed changes.
Go for it!

Skatersbeskating · 04/01/2019 20:47

I waited until DDs pull ups were dry for at least 3 months. No rush.

runwithme · 04/01/2019 20:49

Illangenith, that's really useful. DS7 is still wet at night. I took him to the doctors 6 months ago and they just said to take him to the loo when I went to bed. I don't see how that helps him to recognise the need. Wasn't aware that there were tablets!
