What age for no nappy at night?

I think we're ready to try nappy free nights, (he makes such a fuss about about wearing them he's basically demanding it).

When is best? He's been potty trained during the day for around a year now.

No magic age - 7 for one dd (after a year of meds) 4 for the other.

cantkeepawayforever · 04/01/2019 21:27

10 for DS, 4 for DD.

Now he's 18 I can laugh, but oh boy, at the time it was a nightmare....

DS1 was under 2 and a half, was very soon after being dry in the day. We co-slept and he woke us if he needed a wee.

DS2 will be 4 in March, has been dry in the day about 14 months and dry at night since before Christmas. Said he was a big boy who didn't want a nappy, he has a waterproof mattress protector just in case but no accidents so far. I think he was one for weeing as he naturally woke in the morning as if we ever had to wake him early he would be dry.

Ds1 is 6 and still in pull ups. Ds2 is 3 and has had no nappy for about 3 months. He was waking up dry for weeks so I just went for it.
Ds1 has gone to bed tonight with no pull up as he was desperate to try, so I expect a wet bed, but at least he’s tried.
Top tip I had was to layer the bed with pads and several sheets so if they wet in the night you can just take the top sheet off.

There's no rush. It'll come in time, you'll know when when they're consistently producing dry nappies.

llangennith · 04/01/2019 21:45

Hormone tablets don't 'train' the child and that is not their purpose. They are an invaluable aid until the body starts producing this hormone which often happens at puberty.
My own son (now 43) wasn't dry till aged 10, his father (now 69) wasn't dry till aged 9 so I've known about this hormone thing for a very long time.
Doctors don't like to prescribe the hormone tablets till about age 9 or 10. They have an accumulative effect so must be used continuously and not now and then. Being dry at night has greatly boosted DGS's self esteem. He feels 'normal' now.

llangennith · 04/01/2019 21:48

cantkeepawayforever I can totally empathise with the nightmare times. There were no disposable night nappies when my own son was wetting and I was washing bedding and pyjamas every day for years.

motheroftwojedi · 04/01/2019 22:25

Eldest was dry in the day at 2.5ish yo (I forget exactly) but not at night til 7.5 yo.

Youngest dry in the day and at night a month before his 3rd birthday.

Didn't push it with either of them. Just waited until they both started waking with dry nappies.

potatoscone · 04/01/2019 22:27

I waited for mine to wake up dry a few mornings then took the pull ups out of the equation. No point taking it off and expecting a child to wake up. It's a subconscious act they have to work out themselves.

Eh1112 · 04/01/2019 22:30

I waited until DD had been dry for two weeks in a row. She was 21 months when we stopped using nappies at night (she had been dry during the day since 15 months).

Thanks for these informative and reassuring replies.

We tried it last night because basically I am sick of fighting with him over the nappy. I put a waterproof thingy under his sheets, put a potty in his bedroom which he weed in just before he went to bed, and explained about using it in the night or 1st thing in the morning.

He woke up at his normal time, and... no joy. He's obviously not ready. At least I protected the mattress!

I'll look into those alarm thingies, as he really really wants to stop wearing nappies or pull-ups (I find PUs leak anyway). But have taken on board it's simply a hormonal thing, and they aren't ready until they're ready and dry in the morning. He's almost 4 btw.

Thanks!

Have you tried Lidl pull ups?

Ragaroo · 05/01/2019 08:45

Ds was 3.5 yrs and we've only had one accident.

cliffdiver · 05/01/2019 08:59

DD1 was 2y 9mo - a week after she was dry in the day.

DD2 was dry in the day at 2y 3m - she's still in pull ups at night at 4y 9mo.

Justwaitingforaline · 05/01/2019 09:02

DD was dry at night at 3, about a week after she was dry in the day.

The nappies & pull ups feom Lidl have always been excellent for us. It might be worth trying 1 pack, we never had leaks.
